Night Watch - Initiated

Who: An original character - "Nightwatch"
What: An Other goes out on a watch to try and stop rebellious vampires.

It's not an uncommon thing for a vampire to hunt a human being in this city. They have just about every right to live, well to exist more specifically, and carry on with their normal lives. Occasionally, with a license of course, they're given the right to hunt for their food and not just survive on pre-packaged blood. Like any hunter, be it human or Other, a good fresh meal is always a rare treat given they follow the rules. But lately those rules have been broken.

More and more unlicensed vampires are showing up in this city, killing because they feel a right to rebel, and leaving a trail of blood behind as the dead body stays for Militia the next morning. Just a couple months ago, a pair of young vampires had been taken care of due to their irresponsibility. A newly turned female-vampire and her mentor luring young children to their doom as she fed viciously. It was the Night Watch's duty to make sure no one broke the rules, as was it the Day Watch's, though vampires were more our specialty than theirs.

The boss had specifically requested that computer expert Anton Gorodetsky deal with this problem. To go out and try being a field agent and not just a programmer for those five years since being turned to an Other. He'd taken care of the older one, but the female had been furious and plotted her revenge. And what a time too. Just when a great curse had threatened to open the Inferno and kill thousands of people did the young female-vampire decide to track down that escaped prey and plan to kill him for her vengeance.

All stories of course, not none less the fictional than the reality that is my life living as an Other. Everything turned out good in the end though. Maybe not for the female-vampire, but both light and dark Others were back in the balance of keeping the peace between both sides. An Other for quite a while, and having gone through extensive training of being a field operative, I once again found myself out and about alone and in search of that one vampire who'd been breaking the rules. I don't understand how vampires can enjoy the taste of blood, but then again, I don't have the hunger they crave.

That is until I actually drink it myself and start sensing that desirable lust of food. Still, that first sip of liquid, pigs blood no less, is horrible no matter how many times you've drunk it to increase your sensibility. Sometimes I wish I was able to sense them without the aid of plasma, but I wasn't an experienced magician, a novice, and needed help in the beginning. Over the years, and with more training, I'd be sure to trace vampires with no sweat. The boss assured me that I'd had a lot of power in me, but was struggling to obtain that level of success.

I followed the scent, ascending closer and closer to the warehouse where he'd lured in his victims of that evening. Two of them-Male and female; a couple out for a good time, but then suddenly drawn in unison as that alluring song called out to them. Amazing that this vampire had been able to call not one, but two humans into his trap for dinner. Surely a vampire with that much power had to have been ancient; an elder. But if so, then why did he feel the need to just now break the law when he'd been abiding by it for so long in the past?

I'd made it inside the warehouse, casually scanning the Twilight for hints, and caught a dead body lying sprawled out on the floor, the last ounces of his blood lying in a pool besides his neck. I sensed presences nearby and raised my shadow, quickly stepping inside it to enter the Gloom. The woman was there, bewitched and oblivious to see that her lover was dead on the floor, and slowly walked in a trance toward the vampire who smiled with extended fangs.

"Nightwatch," I screamed through the muffled sound and he stopped his song and looked at me in fury.

I reached into my pocket to pull out the amulet, but already I'd made a mistake. One should already have the charm out when dealing with criminals, it's noted while in training, and when I looked back up, the vampire was gone from his spot. I could've cursed at myself, but knew that meant danger, and hurried toward the woman. She was alright-No puncture wounds visible, but still perplexed in a dream. I'd have influenced her to go home and forget about the evening, but that sneaky fiend appeared behind and threw me with all his strength.

I'd landed hard on my back, unharmed, but still phased as I quickly pushed myself back up onto my feet in defense mode. He was gone again, but where to this time? Too late to think. I felt something from underneath grab at me and lift me high into the air and back against a wall. "Impossible," I thought. "He's gone into the second layer of the Twilight in means to defeat me."

Never had I been, or wanted to go into that layer, but this vampire in front of me was and that's why he'd been gaining the upper hand. I needed backup, and as much as I hated to admit it, I was loosing. And to just one of them. Oh, it was really pathetic, and I'd regretted drinking as much Vodka as I did hours earlier too. I'm positive that influenced my poor behavior this evening. I reached out with my senses and called into the mental realm for help. Near or far, it didn't matter, just as long as it was my comrades who'd hear it.

"And hurry," I added on as I saw the vampire appear before me.

I held up the amulet and a bright glow emitted from the base and immediately the vampire ahead of me recoiled back in fear, but something suddenly grabbed me from behind with more force than I'd imagined and I'd been drawn into the darkness-Drawn into the second layer of the Gloom. Never had I imagined it to be this horrid, but I'd heard stories, and these tales could never comprise the feeling of overpowered to actually being inside such a place. There was almost no color, reality was barely able to distinguish, and all sound was non-existent. Despair and Gloom reigned in here, but what I saw before me was even more shocking then the energy drain overwhelming my body. Three elderly vampires stood in front, prudent expressions and mere mockery plastered upon their faces, a set of strong arms holding me captive from behind, the only female of the group approached and smiled with a sickly sweet gleam of her teeth.

How'd they'd managed to stay in this level for so long was confusing, but they'd somehow managed it. Placing her fingers over her lips and then into her mouth, she bent down slowly and put the wet tip of her finger on my neck. A cold chill placed upon my body as I felt those teeth slowly touch the base of my flesh, and my body opened up to the pain. Like two knives, they dug slowly into my skin as I felt the puncture and then draining of my blood as my body orgasmic from the sensation. It was quick, but every millisecond she drank, I felt myself becoming weaker and weaker as I spiraled out of the Twilight and into reality.

That's one good thing about this place. It despises the sight of blood like a Hemophiliac, releasing its grip on you and denying your place in its realm. But I wasn't dead, just nearly drunk to death, lying on the floor as I watched with horrified curiosity as the female-vampire slit her own wrists with the flick of her nail and bent down toward me. They wanted me to drink. To become one of them; initiated into their clan.

Though I was dying and weak, I still managed to muster enough strength to pull away and shake my head. Little good that did. A set of palms forcefully placed themselves upon the edges of my head and held me still and the vampires' placed her wound on my lips. Feeling the blood trickle down my tongue and into my throat, a burning sensation filled the void and grew from my gums. It was changing me already.

And entranced into the feeling like a human with no self control, I sucked the blood on the outside and straight into her veins. They say that death is painless, but people only say that to ease your terrified thoughts on passing. My stomach cramped, my gums itched, and slowly my body was transforming as I died with unbearable pain. That hunger I'd sensed whilst drinking pigs blood increased ten times and I lusted for human blood more than ever now. I truly knew what it was like to feel their hunger.

There was darkness, as if I'd gone into a deep sleep, but then as if the pearly gates of Heaven opened themselves, a bright light much stronger than the one my charm possessed filled the warehouse and the vampires suddenly screamed in pain. I too felt the overwhelming power of its pull, but still on the ground and newly reborn, the effect wasn't nearly as strong. Quiet again, the light dimming down, I rose with confusion, and felt a sudden rush of newcomers approach.

"We're too late," a soft voice spoke, "he's already been initiated as one of them. Bastards!"

The hunger I now felt grew with intensity as the saliva in my mouth watered with desire. The woman was quickly taken care of by the other members of the watch, told to forget everything that happened this night, but my eyes burned into her neck as I craved for some fresh human blood. I shook my head away in frustration and anger and looked down at myself. No different from how I was originally, but then changed so dramatically that I was no longer a member of the light-or dark. An outcast in both worlds I once knew, the only place for my kind was to just exist and follow the rules like a good vampire.

Whispers around me called out, beckoning me to destroy the Nightwatch in means to extract revenge for what they had done to my clan, but I knew better then to give in.

"Get me out of here," I mumbled as two sets of hands helped me to my feet and out of the warehouse.

I couldn't stand their voices anymore, nor could I stand what I'd become. But now-now I'd have to learn. No longer accepted as either Other or human, I belonged to the rare species of vampires. It would take a while to getting used to.
