Who: Eben Olemaun - "30 Days of Night"
What: Eben makes a drastic choice to save the ones he loves. Contains spoilers!
It was always so cold. Despite the layers of clothes he'd covered himself in that once had done its job, that chill he now felt wasn't the weather outside, but the very essence of his being. The temperature in Alaska was already at a snowy negative ten fahrenheit, with or without the Whiteout that quickly passed over the town of Barrow, and he no longer required a parka to ensure that he wouldn't freeze to death. Hell, he could even wear summer clothes in this sort of weather if he wanted, it wouldn't make a difference now since Eben was technically a collective of the undead. But he was different from these vampires in one reason alone; he had people to love and in return love him.
It was why he'd willingly become one these creatures in the first place. Sure it was stupid and reckless, but when the woman you loved had the choice of either hiding and burning to death or trying to run away and become food to the forces waiting for her to come out, Eben had only one choice; and what a life altering one that had been. Turning into a vampire and facing off to their leader would ensure the safety of his estranged wife, Stella, whom the two had been reunited despite some tragic events, and safely find cover while the two supernatural forces duked it out. Eben for his family and the vampire leader, Marlow, for his clan.
All the weaknesses of the human body had disappeared once he'd turned and in its place was a strength he would've never imagined possible, an array of senses mortals never had the chance to experience, and a strong desire to feed. Oh the hunger was a killer. He didn't know what was worse; his once painful chronic asthma or the endless hunger that plagued his mind. He was stronger than that feeling though, much stronger, and hated how it beckoned him every second of his afterlife. "Feed," his mind tormented, "Feed. Drink the blood of the weak. Blood for life. Drink! Feed! Blood!"
If this is what immortality had to offer in exchange for human life, then Eben hated it. The powers were great and all, but the killing and consuming of humans blew. He became sheriff of the town he was born and raised in to protect people and becoming a monster hadn't changed his view, no matter how hungry he'd become. But how long before his desires took over and he'd lose himself in a frenzy of feasting and forget the ones he'd loved? The ones he'd done his for in order to ensure their safety? What if he'd forget they were his family and attack? Jake, Stella, and all the others dead and torn apart because of him...
Oh god, he couldn't bare that thought. And such consequences must be made for a man who marauders himself for the only thing worth something in his life; the love and protection of the ones he called family.
