CHARACTER
Name: Rapunzel
Series: Tangled
Canon: OU
Age: Eighteen (18)
Timeline: From the point that Eugene (Flynn) leaves Rapunzel in the boat.
History: Before Rapunzel was born, there fell from the sky a drop of sun and where it fell a magical flower grew. Mother Gothel found this flower and used its magical power with a song:Flower, gleam and glow.
Let your power shine.
Make the clock reverse.
Bring back what once was mine.

Heal what has been hurt.
Change the Fates' design.
Save what has been lost.
Bring back what once was mine.
What once was mine.
Mother Gothel used this flower for hundreds of years to retain her youth and beauty, hiding it with a camouflaged basket on the mainland. And throughout this time on an island a kingdom grew and when the queen was pregnant she got sick. So the citizens of their kingdom set off in search for a cure to save her and the unborn child. Gothel had used the flower to restore herself moments before the hunting parties got near, hiding the flower and going off but as she turned, her lantern knocked the basket off and her flower was found.

The sun-flower's magic saved the queen and a little princess was born with golden hair, Rapunzel, and her parents lit a floating lantern in honor of her birth. However, things were not to remain happy for the royal parents long after, Gothel made her way into the palace and cut a strand of Rapunzel's hair to take with her. Only when it turned brown and the power reversed itself did Gothel come to realize that she had to take the child if she wanted to stay young. And so, they woke to the cries of their daughter being taken by the selfish woman, leaving them wondering if they'd ever see their beloved daughter again. Gothel took Rapunzel onto the mainland into a tower hidden away from the rest of the world and there she raised the princess as if she were her own child, teaching her the song that made her hair glow and Gothel's youth restore itself.

Rapunzel was never allowed to leave the tower as her hair grew and grew, watching from the window on the night of her birthday when the "floating lights" would make their way across the skies. For seventeen years she grew up watching these lights in the skies, longing to see them in person and thinking that they were meant for her. But Gothel keeps reminding her that they stay locked away in the tower because the people out there would want her hair for their own. Something that Rapunzel never questioned until the day before her birthday that year. After playing hide and seek with Pascal - her chameleon - she spends the morning cleaning, baking, painting, exercising, reading, sewing, candle-making, playing chess, doing ballet, ventriloquy, playing darts, doing puzzles, climbing, playing guitar, knitting, papier-mache, and brushing her hair (over 70ft of it).

By then Rapunzel spots a blank piece of wall that she can paint and on it she paints a scene of herself on a tree watching the floating lights. She is determined to ask her mother if she can go see them this year for her birthday, planning to ask her after she lets her hair down and pulls Gothel up into the tower. Rapunzel tries to bring up what she wants for her birthday repeatedly, always interrupted by Gothel talking about some other sort of nonsense. Then the older woman asks Rapunzel for a little "pick-me-up" saying that afterward they'd talk. Jumping at the chance, the young girl rushes around the tower room, grabbing Gothel's chair, her own stool, the brush, nudges Gothel in the chair and begins to sing the song. Gothel barely has time to brush at Rapunzel's glowing hair before the song ends, she's singing so fast, and when Gothel goes to reprimand her for it... Rapunzel leaps right into asking for what she "really wants" for her birthday this year, showing her star charts and her painting. But Gothel shuts her down saying/singing that Rapunzel isn't prepared for the world out there and it would eat her up alive. So their little spat ended Gothel goes back out and leaves Rapunzel in the tower to wait yet again.

Rapunzel is left alone in the tower for the rest of the morning, that is until Flynn Rider makes his appearance having climbed her tower using two arrows in order to avoid being captured by Maximus, a palace horse. But as soon as he finds himself in the tower, he's knocked out by Rapunzel and her frying pan, she eeks and hides behind a sewing mannequin. Remembering her mother's warnings about "men with pointy teeth" she and Pascal start to inspect him with the pan doing most of the touching. Once he's deemed harmless - and knocked out a second time - Rapunzel then spends the remainder of her alone time trying to figure out how exactly to stuff him into the standing closet. It takes her a few hilarious tries to get him to actually stay in the closet without the doors opening and Flynn falling on her, but once she has Rapunzel gets all confident. Oh, yeah. She and her trusty frying pan can take on the world! Then she spots a shimmer in the mirror from Flynn's satchel.

What Rapunzel pulls out of it is a crown with three prominent diamonds on it - the missing princess' crown that Flynn and two thugs stole earlier in the day - and having never seen something like it before, she promptly starts trying it on in various ways. First like a bracelet, to which Pascal shakes his head, then she holds it in front of her eye like a magnifying glass and gets another head-shake. Finally she gets the idea to turn it around and puts it on her head, looking at herself in the mirror in awe, Pascal mirrors her expression and then shakes his head yet again. Any other trial-and-error wearings of the crown is interrupted by Gothel's return, Rapunzel stuffs the crown and the satchel in a pot and then hurries to hoist her mother up the tower with her hair. They both have surprises for each other, though Gothel's is "hazelnut soup", a favorite dish of Rapunzel's.

So she starts to bring up going out to see the lights again until Gothel snaps and yells at her that she's never going to leave the tower, ever. Subdued by her mother's rare yelling, Rapunzel brings up something else for a birthday present: new paint made from white shells at the beach. It's a three day's trip but Gothel agrees to the trip, leaving soon after she's provisioned with food. And once Gothel is out of the small enclosed area that the tower is in Rapunzel turns her attention back to the closet. Armed with her frying pan, her hair, and a chair she pulls the closet doors open; Flynn doesn't fall out until a few seconds later, face-planting on the floor and sliding forward on it a bit. Rapunzel gets Flynn on the chair and ties him up with his hair, pulling him into a circle of light in the middle of the tower floor, then it's a matter of waking him up which she leaves to her little friend.

Pascal first hits Flynn's face with his little front claw, then his tail a few times when the thief doesn't wake before he finally resorts to sticking his tongue in his ear. He wakes with a yelp to find himself tied to the chair in...hair and looks around for the end of it where Rapunzel is up in the rafters, hiding in the shadows. When she comes down she asks him who he is and how he found her but all Flynn does is try to smooth talk his way out of things but he just gets a confused look out of Rapunzel as he introduces himself and explains his situation that landed him in the tower. Then he realizes he's lost his satchel and Rapunzel tells him it's hidden where he won't find it, he guesses the pot and it's lights out again until Pascal wakes him up with his tongue in Flynn's ear again. Rapunzel starts interrogating him again, asking him what he wants with her hair when all he wants to do is get out of it, has no idea really why anyone would want her hair at this point. She then has a talk with Pascal about needing a guide and that Flynn doesn't have fangs, decided she pulls the chair around (Flynn face-plants again) to show him her new painting of the "floating lights".

Flynn tells her they're the "floating lantern thing they do for the missing princess" and Rapunzel goes on to tell him the deal: he takes her to see the lanterns, brings her back, he gets his satchel back. He says no at first, then Rapunzel goes off on a spiel about something bringing him to her tower for this purpose and without her Flynn won't find his satchel. Flynn rethinks his situation as Rapunzel tells him she never ever breaks a promise, he tries yet again to get out of this whole thing by turning on "the smolder". And again, Rapunzel is unaffected - confused but still stern-faced - so he gives in, elated Rapunzel forgets that she's got his chair at a tilt and was supporting it so when she lets go Flynn face-plants again. Her guide acquired Rapunzel finds herself standing at her window-ledge, peering out before she finally flings herself out using her hair to help her descent, pausing just shy of touching the grass.

When she does Rapunzel goes off on a little run, thrilled with the feel and smells of the grass and the stream, ecstatic that she's outside of her tower for the first time in eighteen years. But when it sinks in begins the whole back and forth issues of being a horrible daughter, her mother would kill her, but on the other hand she's having so much fun that she never wants to go back. She ends up sitting near a bunch of rocks when Flynn comes up to her, he tries to give her a pep talk about the expected teenage rebellion but then he gets to talking about things that just make her upset. "Does your mother deserve it? No. Will this break her heart and crush her soul? Of course! But you just got to do it." And when it looks like Rapunzel is about to change her mind and go back to the tower, Flynn hands her the frying pan and Pascal, saying she can give him his satchel and they can part as unlikely friends. But Rapunzel shakes him off, saying she's going to see the lights and will use her frying pan if she has to.

Before she can there's some branch snapping behind a nearby bush and she panics, climbing up on Flynn with her frying pan in front of him, wondering if it's thugs or ruffians after her when it turns out to be a bunny rabbit. Teasing her Flynn says they can probably smell fear. They agree it's probably best to avoid such things, and still trying to get rid of her Flynn comes up with a "perfect place" to get something to eat: The Snuggly Duckling. They make their way there while Gothel comes back - finding Maximus - to find Rapunzel is gone from the tower, she also finds the crown and Flynn's wanted poster, so she starts on her own search. Flynn and Rapunzel get into the restaurant which despite it's adorable name, the patrons there are anything but, they're a bunch of viking-dressed mercenaries that stop the pair from leaving when Flynn says it's best to get her home. Why are they stopped? Because of the reward out for Flynn; they send someone to fetch the guard then fight over who should get the reward and Rapunzel is left trying to retrieve her guide. Finally she resorts to grabbing a tree limb decoration in the shop and uses it to hit one of the thugs on the head.

When she has their attention she demands they release Flynn, she needs him to see the floating lanterns, something she's been dreaming about since she was a little girl. The viking about to punch Flynn pulls an axe off his back and walks over to her, flinging it at a poor musician chained to the wall who starts playing. They all start sharing their dreams, ones that are vastly different than their scary mugs and everyone ends up bonding. However at the end of the song and dance number the fellow they sent out to get the guard returns to search for Flynn. The viking that threw the axe opens a secret passage for the pair to escape through while the others distract the guard and the two thugs that Flynn stole the crown with. Flynn and Rapunzel calmly walk through the tunnel, starting to ask questions about each other when Flynn asks why she's never left the tower until now.

Unsure on how to answer Rapunzel hesitates long enough that the guard - who find the escape hole with Maximus' help - are running down the tunnel after them. They gather up her hair and start running, finding themselves at a large dam with a cliff in front. The palace guards come racing out of the cave exit behind them and Rapunzel asks "Who is that?" for them, the two thugs that break through another exit down in the cavern, and then for Maximus who comes out behind the guard. Flynn's general answer being "They don't like me," Rapunzel leaves her frying pan with Flynn and uses her hair to swing herself over to a small ledge, leaving Flynn to fight the guards with her pan. Then ends up fighting Maximus - whom has a sword in his teeth - and is disarmed, Rapunzel flings her hair out around his hand and pulls him off the cliff so that he can escape. Flynn almost gets caught by the two thugs and slams into a ledge that sticks out, a sort of "long tom" - the mining apparatus that brings water down from its source.

Maximus starts kicking at one of the support beams for the dam to get over to where Rapunzel is, only she jumps off with Flynn holding onto the other end of her hair. The horse almost bites her hair as she jumps and slides across some water at the cavern floor then sprints for the exit. Flynn is a few seconds behind her having slid down the "long tom" pausing to gather up some of her hair as the dam bursts and the water causes a huge rock to start falling down. Flynn picks up her frying pan just as the rock blocks off their exit from most of the water now filling the cavern. Unfortunately the exit they ran toward is blocked by a bunch of rocks and water is quickly filling the small space they're now trapped in. Flynn tries to find a way out, then shoves at the rocks while Rapunzel does the same with her frying pan. All that manages to happen, though is Flynn cuts his hand until they finally give up.

As people are like to do in their "last few moments" they tell each other secrets, Flynn Rider's real name is Eugene Fitzherbert and Rapunzel laughingly says that her hair glows when she sings. Like that a lightbulb goes off in her head and with the last bit of air she starts to sing the song, the water finally filling all the way to the top but now they can see in the pitch black water where there is water going out of their trapped exit. Eugene - Flynn for the rest of the history - starts pulling at the rocks as her hair starts to go dark and they finally break through the other side, the pressure of the water helping them burst out into a pond. The two pull themselves to shore with the tired thrill of being alive, Rapunzel gets out of the water and starts pulling her hair in as Eugene has a "her hair actually glows" conversation with Pascal. She interrupts and tells him that's not all it can do, leaving Pascal smiling at Eugene in a way that has him asking "why is he smiling at me like that?"

A little closer to dark they have a fire going to dry out Rapunzel's hair and they're sitting on a log while Rapunzel wraps a bit of her hair around Eugene's cut hand. After telling him not to freak out she starts to sing the song taught to her by Gothel, her hair starts to glow again and as Eugene starts to panic, Pascal points at his own little claw. When the glow fades Eugene pulls her hair away from his injured hand and his mouth opens to "freak out" when Rapunzel hushes him with a "please don't freak out". He attempts then to cooly blow it off and the like, asking how long has it been doing that. Rapunzel then starts to explain that it's been like that since she was little and when it's cut it turns brown and loses its power, showing him the cut strand. But that was the reason why she had never left the tower, a few moments of awkward silence and Rapunzel asks him about his real name.

Eugene reveals that he was an orphan that read the stories of Flynnigan Rider to the kids when he was little, and to a kid with nothing it seemed a lot better, that kind of life. He gets up to go get more firewood and Rapunzel tells him that she likes Eugene Fitzherbert a lot better than Flynn Rider; she watches him go and who else appears but Gothel. She tries to get her wayward daughter to come back home with her but Rapunzel is stubborn and wants to finish her journey with Eugene, someone she thinks that likes her. This starts Gothel off on a spiel about the only reason Eugene is with Rapunzel still is because of the satchel and the crown inside, telling the young girl to give it to him and see how long he sticks around afterward. Gothel leaves the satchel and crown with Rapunzel who stuffs it in a hollowed out tree stump when Eugene comes back wondering if he'll have superpowers.

He catches Rapunzel looking off in the distance but shrugs it all off when she says she was just lost in thought. At some point they bed down for the night and Rapunzel is awakened by Eugene's yelling, Maximus has found them and is pulling Eugene by the boot to the palace. She quickly gets to her feet and grabs Eugene's hands, pulling him back into the clearing until Eugene's foot pops out of the boot and they go flying. Maximus charges them with the boot still in his mouth until Rapunzel steps in and tries to calm him down. She manages to get the horse to drop the boot and to sit before she starts to sweet-talk Maximus, saying he's such a good horse and no one appreciates him, do they? Eugene keeps saying that Maximus is a bad horse but she ignores him and keeps on piling on the scratches, endearing Maximus to her. Then she lays the deal on him, Maximus can't get Eugene arrested for the entire day, she needs him to see the floating lanterns.

At first it seems as if Maximus will refuse but when Rapunzel throws in that it's also her birthday, the horse gives in and shakes hands with Eugene. Rapunzel hears the church bells just then and starts to follow after them, blind to the "beating up" going on between Eugene and Maximus as she walks into the first town she's ever been into in her entire life. The first problem that they run into? Her long hair trailing after her is getting in the way of all of the townsfolk who keep stepping on it. So Eugene helps her gather it up and spies some little girls at the fountain braiding each other's hair, he gives a whistle and the come over. Rapunzel's hair is now braided and covered in flowers, its length only going down to touch the floor with how thick it's braided. They spend the rest of the day: reading books, dancing, Rapunzel sees a mural for the lost princess with her parents, drawing with chalk, buying a kingdom flag, eating cupcakes while hiding from the guards.

Finally it's almost time for the lanterns to be lit and Eugene helps Rapunzel into a small rowboat and rows them out to a space between the island kingdom and the mainland. Maximus he left on shore with a bag full of "mostly" bought apples, leaving the law-abiding horse to ponder which ones were stolen. They spend some time out in the boat with Rapunzel wondering if it will live up to her dreams, though Eugene promises that it will. A while later while Rapunzel is putting flowers on the tower spire's reflections in the water and she notices the first lantern taking flight followed by a huge flock of lanterns lit by the townsfolk to guide the lost princess home. In her haste the young girl almost tips the boat over as she climbs to the bow of it to watch them breathlessly as they make their journey up into the skies, glancing back as she notices a closer glow behind her. Eugene has in his hands two lanterns for them to throw up into the sky with the others, but Rapunzel says she has something for him too.

She holds out the satchel, saying she was afraid to give it to him before but now she's not scared anymore. Eugene takes it saying he's starting to feel the same way and puts it down in the boat, handing Rapunzel her lantern and they throw them up in the sky. During the moments that follow - with the royal couple's lantern coming down and Rapunzel tossing it up - Rapunzel slowly realizes what a wonderful world they're in and that...she might actually love Eugene especially when he takes her hand in the boat. They sing to one another (ah, Disney) and just as they're about to kiss Eugene notices a lantern standing on the mainland, the thug-brothers that he was working with before. He rows them to shore and satchel in hand he gets out, saying that he has to go do something and he'll be right back. Rapunzel nods, trusting that he'll return to her, and waits in the boat with Pascal for Eugene to return.

Personality: Rapunzel is a very sheltered girl. The only things she knows about the outside world is what she's read in books, seen through the changing of the seasons, and what her mother (Gothel) has told her about. She might dream and daydream but what does the grass really feel and smell like? It's something that we take for granted but Rapunzel honestly has no idea what it feels and smells like before she takes that leap out of her tower into the real world. Rapunzel might be scared and unsure of things that she doesn't know but she also doesn't back down. When faced with the thugs and their clamoring for Flynn (and the reward) she fought back and instead of shying back when they all looked at her, she stood up for Flynn and why she needed his assistance.

She's happy and energetic, creative and has a great sense of adventure, Rapunzel is the child of a drop of sunshine really. While she does get upset and sad, worry and fret it's never for long, there's always something around that perks her back up. Which is very surprising for a girl that's lived all of her eighteen years in a tower all by herself with naught but her mother and a chameleon for company. The only thing really holding her back from perhaps fitting in with society is her childlike innocence at everything she's never encountered and her naivety. You'd swear she almost lived in rose-tinted glasses except for the fact she's very aware of the dangers all around her. But with her friends with her (and her frying pan) Rapunzel finds that she can tackle each one that gets thrown at her. She's just got to be determined to do it and to not back down from the unknown.

Abilities/Additional Notes: As mentioned in the history, Rapunzel's hair has magical healing and restoring properties when she sings the song taught to her by Gothel. However, when her hair is cut the strand turns brown and it loses its magical properties. And since people would want to use her hair for their own, Rapunzel pretty much keeps quiet about what it can do. With the cut strand being at the nape of her neck there isn't really an outward clue that her golden hair is different than the brown strand.

Other than that Rapunzel often uses her hair as a lasso of sorts to grab things or pull herself or others up. She's used to it being loose and ready to use in times of need. Pascal also goes with her, everywhere. It's rare that the chameleon is further from her than a few feet, not including hair.

Third-Person Sample: Rapunzel stared at the patterns in front of her, patterns she had been lucky to get in fact, and exchanged a look with Pascal, "I don't know, Pascal. I know they worked hard to get these for me, but I just don't know if I can make my own shoes."

After making the short trip from where she woke up to the apartment building, Rapunzel had to heal her own feet from the cuts she got walking around. This was no place to be without shoes, even if she hated wearing them and hadn't for the past sixteen years. Gothel hadn't minded not having to pay for shoes for a growing girl, just gave her the fabric to make her own dresses. "But I'd hate to have to ask them to go into town and take some when I don't even know what size feet I have."

She sat down on the bed and held up her feet, leaning back so she could look at them, "It's not like I can keep going around healing my feet, either. Or go into town myself..." Rapunzel sighed and flopped back on the bed, letting her feet drop, "Suppose I'll just have to ask..."

First-Person Sample Journal Post: [There's a shot of a marooned rowboat in the middle of the street near the amusement park, even with the PDA shooting on the ground one can still see the leaning ferris wheel in the background. A young girl with flowers in her braided hair sits up.]

Eugene...? Where...

[Well, this certainly wasn't the mainland where she had been left. She looks as scared like any person might to find themselves suddenly in a new location.]

Eugene! Where are you? [Rapunzel pauses, looking around the boat.] Pascal?! Oh, please be here! [She keeps digging around for whomever Pascal seems to be.] Eugene! Answer me!

[Still silence.] Oh... Where could he be? [She picks up a small green thing.] Pascal? I think...we're lost...
