Their eyes are locked, each sizing the other up with bodies flexed and arched in beautiful defensive inquisitiveness. Her penetrating gaze is unsettling and Jasper finds himself thinking, for the first time in his life since the change, maybe he should run. It's a thrilling sensation. He forgoes his instinctive habit of calming the situation and allows his heart to begin to race.
Slowly, River takes a step toward him. One carefully calculated stride with perfectly pointed toes, holding her lithe body balanced. She smiles ever so slightly at him in a way that is both inviting and chilling. She must sense what he is or at least to what extent he could hurt her.
He can feel her emotions in waves washing over him. He tries to make sense of them; intuit the fear she should be feeling. But her emotions are not like those of anyone he's ever encountered. In fact, in the centuries he has lived, not even Alice had ever affected him the way this girl was now. Her emotions are whispers and images and colors kaleidoscoping in and through her body. They wrap her in exquisite cords of protective insanity.
"Won't stop. Never stops. I feel everything," she says softly in a lilting voice full of wonder and pain.
And he wants so very much to reach out and touch her. To know what it would be like to be overwhelmed by just a moment within her aura. Could she bring him back to life again? Could he alleviate that chaos driving her further toward madness? He was both sure he wanted to know and unsure still if he should run.
She closes the distance between them and, bending toward his ear, whispers, "She's poison. You should run."
Live or die, he kisses her instead.
