Everyone has their secrets. But everyone leaves a mark in the world. He knows how to find the minutest of details about anyone. He has dossiers on everyone down to Jerry, the bartender at his club. Like father, like son. He knows everything about everyone important enough to know.
Except for her.
She's an enigma. The page in her file contains three pieces of information. Her birthplace - the United Kingdom (something anyone with the ability to hear would know instantly), her approximate age and the possible name of her high school.
Possible doesn't sit well with him.
But she's gotten under his skin. Even though at times she's farther away than others. He sees the look on her face and knows she's in the stars, in the future.
Still she doesn't ask him to go shopping and he is fine with not having to tune out vapid conversations about the latest insecurity driven reason to secretly hate Serena van der Woodsen.
Sometimes he almost sees through her eyes what the world was like wherever she had been before the comedy of errors that resulted in a shared taxi cab to The Russian Tea Room on Christmas morning. It stirs the deeply buried parts of him he doesn't want to surface. Those gentle tendernesses that even Blair had never begun to rouse. Things that could - would - only ever end badly.
He knows one day she will disappear. Vanish and take with her all the puzzle pieces and shatter the almost of a new Chuck Bass. The when eats at him every time, in the fitfulness of sleep, she whispers a name lost to time.
Sometimes he can tell she is about to tell him. Sometimes he hopes she never will.
