I used to do this all the time, too. I still have a folder of random stuff that around... 8th, 9th grade made me really, really happy. It's inexplicable. I mean, some of the stuff there is REALLY weird- I have part of a cardboard sword jacked from some cutout advertising LOTR. I've tried to keep doing it, but we keep moving so I think half my stuff is lost. Also, my organizational skills come in fits and starts.
Anyway, I'm glad your bits and pieces are helping you with reconciliation. Your posts are always a pleasure to read- honest, thoughtful and usually containing insights we all need to see.
