AAM

Anyone else at AAM right now?

My current conclusions regarding the economy based on what I've seen:

More swag than last year at the expo = economy getting better BUT fewer people = it's still not great and no one wants to spend money to send people here. And those out of work are struggling so can't come.

Stay strong, and even if you end up in a call centre, don't give up. I ended up doing six years in one, but am now over two years into my 2nd museums job. It does happen! (and in the meantime, volunteer - it's what kept me at least in the running!)

I so wish I could have been at AAM this year as I am not that far away.

This is my last week of work in Colorado... before I start a paid museum internship in mid-June in Maine. I'm going to be out of work for fifteen days before the internship starts, so I needed all the funds I can get, to move and to travel a little before I settle in. Not do any expensive conference, paying for a hotel - for AAM. Although, I would have really, really liked to!

AAM, for sure, would have been a great place to network as I will be out of work in September, and I know in general I would have gotten a lot out of the conference. It's a shame, a true hardship, for those young professionals who are emerging in the field of museums, yet are without a valid student ids ... and/or are interns/part-time in the field... with jobs not paying for AAM conference fees.
