Today I experienced something quite American. I was telling a coworker that I was friends with this one person who works with us as well. She immediately started ranting about not liking my friend because she was a Republican, that my friend may appear that she likes me, but deep down inside, she hates my guts and doesn't want to protect my rights

I know! I never understood how on American media, people can get so vehement about the party one supports. All I know is one is an elephant and the other one is a donkey. Kebs lang.

I think the most relevant example I can think of is the RH Bill. My brother is anti-RH bill, and of course I am very pro, but I respect that he can defend his stance. Of course, I'm secretly hoping he'll come around, but if he doesn't, I won't shun him. I'll still love him. He's my brother.
