Footage from Power Rangers Samurai has been released as sneak peeks at the new series before it officially airs in February. The original series is compared with the adaptation in morphs and first fight.
Obviously to keep it kid-friendly, they cut the more direct sword stab attack shots from the Power Rangers footage in order to cut back on heavy violence. Especially with the main fight weapon being their katanas/samurai swords.
As the title says, I'm usually optimistic about things but this time I'm pretty skeptical and expecting to see the very worst of worst. I know this show is aimed at little kids from ages 6-10 but even this is looking worse than past seasons. I can't believe how horribly cliche much of the dialogue is for the adaptation. Mainly Emily's sentence because it sounds exactly what they would make a country person sound and act in Hollywood productions.
I think that the dialogue written for Jayden when he summons his personal weapon seemed to contradict the footage actions. The original series had Takeru/Shinken Red acting on his own until his mentor Jii-san insists that he round up his vassals to fight alongside him. Even after joining up with them, he maintains a loner attitude until the middle of the series. Now, I think it would have been smarter to write him saying something about having an idea, summoning his personal weapon, then instructing everyone to follow his lead before charging into the fray. Then it would have probably made more sense.
The morphing device and call for Samurai irks me already. Mainly because it seems like Saban got incredibly lazy and decided that to save money on toy detail, he would make the Shinkenger calligraphy tipped brush become this ridiculous laser light bulb at the end of the phones and leave the rest of the phone body very rectangular and bulky to hold. Because of the phone's body shape, it makes the kanji strokes performed by the actors pretty choppy and almost jarring to watch.
So in short, I'll watch episode 1 with a critical eye. If the entire episode turns into a joke of painful dialogue, jokes, and bad special effects, then count me out for the rest of the season. I'd only check back to see how they introduce Samurai Gold and the counterpart for DaiGoyou (a lantern robot).
