Well I'm slightly biased, as I read the Chad/Ryan Ship Manifesto entry by queenitsy before I saw the movie. She made me laugh soooo much I saved it to memories and went out to buy the DVD and it really is just full of subtext, to my mind. In fact, they're practically canon.
Stupid Taylor, getting in the way. Hence why I really *really* agree with the "Hey, friend of Gabriella!" quote XD It was one of the best parts wasn't it? I love "Fabulous" at the beginning where Sharpay goes all Paris Hilton and Ryan gets to play the piano in the pool!...My mum still thought he was straight (!) until I put on the first DVD and made her watch his jazz squares ;)
I was in choir and drama in high school, and my youngest daughter is heavily involved in show choir now, so I've encountered all too often that stereotype that if you're a boy in arts you must be gay; I got bullied some because of it when I was in school. So that may give me a bit of a bias, in that I look at Ryan and see a kid who likes to sing and dance, rather than any overt indication of his sexual preference.
On the other hand, Disney has tried to be the Inclusive entertainment company, so there's no reason to think they wouldn't bring in a gay character to stand beside all the other people of various races and types in the movie. Maybe I'm just overreacting to my own childhood trauma!
On the other other hand, perhaps I am just seeing what I, as a slash shipper, want to see? XD Disney is fun because they're kind of uptight. Although...he wears a LOT of pink. Like, really. And the jazz squares and all...he's really very camp, so if he's not supposed to be gay I reckon they should watch out what they're implying. BUT if they make him have a crush on Gabriella in the next movie, like the director said before (apparently, it was mentioned on one of the Chyan comms here, which I heart dearly), I will boycott it. He cannot have a crush on Gabriella. Just no.
