Tony Time! (Part 1)

May 26, 2009 17:23

So in just over 2 weeks, the 2009 Tony Awards will be handed out.  And once again, I'm going to voice my two cents on who will win.  Unlike last year, I haven't seen *any* of the nomined shows (unless you count the British productions of "Billy Elliot" and "Mary Stuart," which did import a couple of their leads), but I'm making predictions anyway ( Read more... )

Billy Elliot won't take home best score. It is widely acknowledged that Next To Normal has the better music, while Billy Elliot is a good musical production in spite of the music...

Maybe you're right, but like I said, I can't get into the snippets I've heard. It doesn't make me want to hear more. Of course, it may be a "Color Purple" type thing where on disc, the score is so-so, but onstage and in the context of the show it's excellent.

Also, it really bothers me when a show wins best score and best book and then doesn't win best musical. That to me shows either a disconnect between the material and the production or the production and the voting.

There is a HUGE disconnect between Billy Elliot's score and music... I feel that, just like with the Producers, BE will be thought of as a mediocre to good show with an outstanding production (Greg Jbara notwithstanding... that man needs to learn how to not mug and how to use an accent). Next To Normal is a beautiful production of a beautifully written musical.

Oh, I disagree about "The Producers." I just saw a regional production last month and left chiefly impressed by how solidly put together the show was. Now, I can't really recall anything else that came out that season, so that probably helped, but it doesn't take away from the show's quality.

Which has nothing to do with this year's nominees. But I had to share :-)

I feel that without Broderick (who I generally dislike onstage) and Lane, the production falls flat. I haven't really seen a good production of it since. And the music is way mediocre, even though it is quite funny. That was the year of The Full Monty, which I think is a better show and holds up more than the Producers.
