I know about the 25th amendment. What I am unsure about is:
-Does it apply to the President Elect?
-Does it apply to main party candidates?
-If so, what is the window before the election in which it can be implemented?

Actually, the 25 amendment obviously doesn't apply to CANDIDATES since they haven't been elected.

But are there mechanisms in place in case something happens to one of the candidates? What if McCain had died last week? Would Palin have automatically assumed the role of Republican Presidential Candidate? Or would she have remained Vice Presidential Candidate and the party would have nominated another Presidential Candidate? What if something crazy had happened and they BOTH died? Would the Democratic Party have run effectively unopposed? Are you allowed to cast a presidential vote for someone you already know is dead?
