For Crying Out Loud

Right now I'm playing soundman at a small venue in Lee's Summit.  I do sound here to help out the church it's in.  I get paid well so I can't complain too much.  It's an all ages venue, so there are a lot of young bands here.  Under twenty years of age mostly.

You can imagine that most of the music is...  METAL.

What is this phenomenon?  These kids ( Read more... )

I wish, wish, SO wish I could've been there last night. I think we made the right choice in having me rest instead, but I'm always inclined to choose Life, particularly time with loved ones, over sleep no matter how much I need the sleep.

(Of course, I've come to realize how bad for my loved ones my lack of sleep is...so it's a tough call.)

Can I say again I wish I had been there with you? :-(

If I'm reading this right, these "metal" bands are playing at your church in some sort of a concert...feel free to correct me if that is not accurate. I'm surprised a church would even allow a band to play there (more than once, anyway) that uses foul language like that. What kind of message does that send, not only to the youth, but about the church as a whole? Could that possibly be uplifting in any way? I just can't see that it would be consistent with ANY church's mission statement for bands (or plays, or anything else) to carry on like that, whether it makes money or not.

Just throwing that out there. It did strike me as odd.

There's a sanctuary and a youth room in the church, both of which are equipped with P.A. systems. Most of the kids in our youth groups are listening to metal these days. Very few of the youth that attend our church actually attend these concerts ( ... )

"Jesus mostly did not hang out at churches when he was trying to spread his message. He invaded established religion in a much more powerful way. Christ was having dinner, drinking wine with a tax collector. He and his disciples were in the city with prostitutes and thieves. The dropouts. The losers. The wretched, not the righteous."

(Yes, but he also threw the money changers out of the temple in a fit of anger because they were using the pretext of holiness to commit great sin.)

I really wasn't intending to criticize or condemn your church, I was just surprised, that's all. I do apologize if I came off as sounding negative. I agree 100% that Jesus was all about people, in every form in which he found them. Thank God for that, yes? I know I do! :) I also think ministry is the single most important function of the church, so good for you for reaching out.

I can also see that you would definitely be a very good person with whom to debate/discuss doctrine. :)

I don't mean to be preachy... Thanks for a reply.

I agree with you about exploiting the church for profit. That would be the difference.

I look forward to meeting you someday.
