On the surface he appears frequently cheerful and happy. His open and charming nature has earned him many friends and admirers. However, he is, in fact, masking a deep seeded loneliness which has plagued him for most of his life, having been looked down upon and scorned by certain people around him because of his heritage. Indeed, his desire to form friendships wherever he goes seems to be his response to having been without any real companionship for so long. And despite his general popularity among his peers, he still feels that no-one truly understands him and remains a somewhat lonely young man. It seems that the only person with whom he ever felt any true kinship was his roommate Gilbert, who he sees an having experienced similar ostracism and loneliness. He possesses a significant degree naiveté and almost childlike idealism which often only further endears him to many people, yet has been known to frustrate others. In particular his attempt to become closer to Gilbert while maintaining his other friendships. Despite his intellect and considerable musical talents, he is not an ambitious person. While he does express a desire to one day become a professional pianist, he also states that he is far more interested in making the most of his youth than making plans for the future. Although this does not mean that he completely unconcerned with such things. for instance, he is shown to be very dedicated to his schoolwork. In general, it can be said that he is someone who lives for the present. While he has a great deal of respect for others, both peers and authority figures, he is quick to reject social convention in favour of what he believes is right. The negative side of this conviction is that he can be somewhat stubborn in his views. It also serves as another example of his naiveté that he sometimes finds it difficult to understand that others do not share his sensibilities. AU History Serge’s father was a nobleman from a prominent pureblood family who married a muggle woman. There was somewhat of a scandal when his parents chose to abandon the magical world rather than face scorn among the high society.
Thus Serge was born and lived the early years of his life among muggles. However this all changed when his parents were both tragically struck down by illness. Taken in by his paternal grandparents, Serge became fully immersed in the magical world. While his parents had never tried to hide his magical heritage from him, he was too young to fully understand it. However, being so young also meant that he was able to adapt rather easily to such a sudden change.
As he grew up he became aware of the prejudice that his parentage attracted from some of the more snobbish members of pureblood society, even within his own family. His aunt, in particular, was especially unhappy when Serge formed a close friendship with her own daughter, Angeline, and made it very clear that she did not like having him around. It was for this reason that he chose to transfer to Beaxbatons following the death of his grandmother, having been home schooled up until then.
While there he made a number of friends, most notably his troubled roommate Gilbert Cocteau, with whom he developed a very close, almost romantic, attachment. He also proved to excel academically, generally doing well in all of his classes.
Eventually, Gilbert transferred out of Beaxbatons for reasons which were not explained to Serge. As Serge had no idea where Gilbert was, he was unable to write to him and all contact between the two was cut off.
Some time later, during a regular visit from Angeline, a miscast spell caused her to become injured. Her mother, blaming Serge for this, sought to have his ’dangerous influence’ from her daughter’s life and took action to have him transferred to another school abroad, eventually deciding on Hogwarts.
