Why don't more so-called "moderate Muslims" condemn terrorist attacks that basically have Islam at their root. Yes, extremists manipulate the wording from the Qu'ran, but the concept of Jihad didn't come from nowhere ( Read more... )

My guess? It has nothing to do with those staying silent, who are living their lives.

exactly what yardlong said! most people want to just live their lives and not get caught up in condemning terrorists.

but that said, i'm sure there are plenty of mulsims who condemn islamic terrorists...

a quick google search shows that is the case - http://mediamatters.org/research/2013/09/24/fox-isnt-paying-attention-muslims-across-the-wo/196058

i guess try not getting your news from fox!

It's disappointing that muslims don't support gay marriage and equal women's rights? Are you kidding me? What exactly do you mean by moderate muslims?

Probably what someone like you touts yourself as. ~Moderate muslim~ is someone who can be both western and respect western values while keeping their faith in tact.

Without viewing everybody else as infidels.

So, practically a moderate muslim is someone who okays equal women's rights and gay marriage for the non-muslims but not for muslims, provided (s)he is trying to keep his/her faith intact. So this is the answer to your question - why bother marching down the street for the rights that has nothing to do with us? And marching down the streets protesting against terrorism makes no sense, terrorists won't stop if muslims do that.

Clearly in that case Islam isn't so much a ~religion of peace and tolerance~ as you all make it out to be. More like...let's turn a blind eye and let injustices reign...in the name of Allah.

It's a common misrepresentation of Muslims to say that moderate don't speak out. Firstly, since we are talking about Kenya, so many western scholars condemn it, scholars in Kenya itself condemned it - it is all over FB and online, really. Media doesn't portray that because it's not exciting and won't get ratings.

Secondly, how does one expect a "moderate" Muslim to condemn anything? Should I go to my neighbor's house and say "Hey, by the way, I condemn this." Or I should I say the same to every cashier I encounter? When all of the Muslim voices - namely major scholars, organizations, mosques - are condemning it, where else can a regular, average Joe Muslim set up shop to say "I don't support murder." Don't you think it's demeaning as a human being to even say that? Just to be made to point out such an obvious thing is insulting enough. For those terrorist, why do I have to apologize on their behalf? Should an American apologize for the drone attacks? Should the Christians apologize for McVeigh or any serial killer? Should the Taiwanese ( ... )
