I think it's fantastic and in character. My personal feelings about snuff and fear/loss of loved ones shouldn't and don't factor into that (though it wouldn't matter if they did as I have no issues with either and love this idea like crazy).
I think a lot of people forget how downright selfish and cruel Eugene really was at first. And despite Rapunzel bringing out the genuine goodness and love in him, I can't imagine he's resolved all his personal issues or grown entirely out of "bad" behavior. He's human. He's lived a pretty shitty life presumably. It makes sense to me that he'd want to relive that moment of his revival over and over again. Especially if it meant he could feel the absolute certainty of her love on top of the hope without the threat of truly dying
