A lot has been said about how to prevent rape.

Women should learn self-defense. Women should lock themselves in their houses after dark. Women shouldn't have long hair and women shouldn't wear short skirts. Women shouldn't leave drinks unattended. Fuck, they shouldn't dare to get drunk at all.

If a woman is drunk, don't rape her.

Well, I will completely disagree with the "Don't tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape." Maybe it's just my perspective as a male (that most evil of creatures), but if one is 'not safe' and takes actions that put oneself at risk, that's not terribly bright.

Yes, a woman should be able to do whatever the hell she wants without fear of being raped, but that's not a realistic viewpoint.

Hey, while we're at it, let's tell people to quit killing people. Or stealing. Or all the other crimes, for that matter ( ... )

I've debated responding to this, and since I can't stop thinking about it, here I go.

I'm not saying we need to accept rape as a crime. That was not my intention at all. My point was that we need to start looking at rape from another view, not as something that we can only defend against. I'm saying we need to be proactive as well, not just learn how to deal with it as it comes. And I'm not saying we should only do one or the other, as this author may be suggesting, but I agree with them that we shouldn't just teach women how to do all this, and that we shouldn't have to. It's the way rape is looked at here that we need to accept, that kind of view of rape, rather than accepting rape as a crime.
