As a film, Wings of Desire functions perfectly on every level. The narrative is presented visually, which I think is all-important in a visual medium!!! I’ve been tearing the house up today looking for my videotape, but I can’t find it. I want to watch it. Yeah, the Nick Cave scene is one of my favorite parts.
Though it’s quite different from Wings of Desire, it’s sequel, Faraway, So Close might be worth a watch. In some ways, it’s a bit of a buddy movie between Damiel and Cassiel. It’s more plot-heavy, and whereas I found Wings more uplifting, Faraway So Close is gloomier.
oh god, yeah. Wings of Desire is mostly a masterpiece and one of my favorite works of art, but everything else Wenders has ever made has been a fascinatingly boring train wreck.
I've only ever seen these two from Wender, and adored Wings of Desire...I might have to seek out some more of his work just to see. How can someone with such great musical taste not have more than one film I'd like?
There are a few films I've watched that people have heralded as being The Next Best Thing Since Sliced Bread, but end up being a complete waste of time. Actually, one of the films that I adore is one that a lot of people seem to see that way (Videodrome), but my reasons for loving it don't have much to do with the plot itself (which is fun but riddled with ARGH REALLY? and, save Bianca O'blivion, completely worthless characters) and more to do with the absolutely batshit ideas that went into it. That said, that segues into Cronenberg's more recent project, Eastern Promises, which pretty much has the same dull tone as what you described above.
It's a shame the film didn't turn out to be all that interesting, if only because the set-up sounds like something I'd have fun watching.
In other news: My ears (eyes?) perked up when I saw this post 'cause Until the End of the World is a really fun Apoptygma Berzerk track, and I had to wonder briefly if there was any relation, nevermind that there's a Preacher book with the exact same title
( ... )
I like Videodrome, with all its argh really :D Altho it does get mached up in my memory with They Live, another one with interesting ideas but, unfortunately, Roddy Piper. You should give Until the End of the World a try, since it's kind of along those lines. Maybe my old professor just built my expectations up far too high.
Oh, Preacher...I have such a love/hate thing with that series. But any reference to it catches my attention, so it must be more love than hate.
And that Apoptygma Berzerk track was on every single mix cd I made during the weekend-goth years. Good times.
Hahaha, oh god, Roddy Piper. That movie was hilarious in so many ways. Really my favorite Carpenter film still has to be The Thing, but They Live still holds a special place in my heart. And yeah, Videodrome is still an amazing piece of work, even if my blind adoration of Cronenberg has slipped considerably. Also I guess it says something that the summary that you said was giving you the creeps was by the same guy, hah.
Goes to show that even if you're sure you're not as good as [j. random director] and maybe never will be, you're probably wrong. Watch their earliest films as consolation.

He puts together great mix tapes, though.
