Speaking of "chemistry"...cirneJuly 30 2007, 21:06:33 UTC
I imagine that chemistry, being a science, isn't used in that sense (the connection between two people) in Mackenzie's world-- though obviously the title pun wouldn't have conveyed well to this world's readers without using that word. Maybe they use the word "resonance" instead?
Ian strikes me as a socially-inept geek boy, who was only saying the offensive stuff cause he's used to just hanging around human guys and that's what sort of stuff they say.
He totally has the hots for Mack.
And I think they'll be friends, but not romantically involved.

Flashback to high-school days! Ian's comment about "girls traveling around in impenetrable little packs" is so crisply, sadly evocative of the typical nerdboy's teenage frustrations... But, despite his terminal bashfulness and maladroit fumblings, Ian is basically an idealistic sort--witness his indignation about the way the authorities tried to pump him for information about the lab "accident--" so I'll be very surprised if he doesn't turn out to be an essential actor in poor Mack's eventual liberation.
