The Calm Before The Stor... er, Book 3

Aug 15, 2007 19:23

I've been asked how long it'll be before I'm ready to start Book 3. I didn't figure I'd make this announcement until I had the Book 2 compilation available for sale, but I've found myself stuck at the library by an unexpected rain... time on my hands and no chance to edit the book, so... here goes.

FIRST(ish)

I propose, and i'll send you an email reguarding this, something that Pete from Sluggy freelance done a couple years ago.

if the readerbase can/will donate enough money to let you live for a year, you quit your job and get a chance to write full time.

this would give you time to get your book done, as well as get a nice chapter of MUTales out each day, hopefully. what do you say?

yeah. it passed through my mind after i posted, but yeah, youre right.

I have a little bit of an In with at least one webcomic artist, but i'll post around to the ones that i think might be willing and see about refrencing MU in thier dailies.

I say I would need far more than 3k readers for that to be remotely viable, but that is my long term goal (what I mean by being self-sufficient.)

Grrr. You guys are really stabbing my horcruxes here.

I didn't say MU is less serious. I said it isn't a novel... and it isn't. It's an online serial. Seriously. You can check if you don't believe me.

I didn't say the novel I would otherwise be writing would be published, except in the same way MU compilations are. I said I consider it unmarketable. It's not a big step in my career... it's less personal, less experimental, and will require less art and craft than Mu does. Bottom line: don't mistake your trajectory for mine. It's just what I will be writing instead, if I'm not writing MU, as I have to write SOMETHING.

That's understandable to half to be writing something. I'm also not trying to stab your horcruxes either. I just want to be sure I'm not stepping between anyone and their goal. And you DID ask for donations. So I'll see what I can do come payday.

I've somehow managed to find myself with more money than I need, but I'm hesitant to purchase your time away from the project you clearly prefer. Perhaps I will donate after your MUing starts again.

As another person who finds it hard to ask for money, I empathize with you. I have however had the money to donate for a while and just didn't really think of it. A gentle prod now and then won't drive away readers. Help people like me help you.

Um... I didn't express a preference. The only reason I'm working it this way is I couldn't see people responding as positively to "Well, I'll start book 3, but if you donate, I'll quit working on the story you know and love to work on another project you won't get to read without buying."

...so does this mean that MUtales is eventually gonna end? It won't continue indefinitely? (Stupid question, I know) Will there be a sequel, or at least more stories set in the same world?

At this moment I have no plans to end it, no. I'm not sure where you got that from.

i'd hope that there was no plan to end it! Hell, it took 10 weeks to get through what? 10 days?

this is college. Mack has at least 4 years of this stuff to deal with. let's hope lexi hasnt gotten tired of them this quickly

Actually, neither do I. I just reread it and I think I got the novel mixed up with mutales.

I know that you didn't post this just so people will tell you not to give up your dream of a published novel for some money. You will do what you can, when you can, and will enjoy it as much as possible. Am I right? I will donate, because frankly, your writing is awesome, and you deserve added benefits for your gift.
