Character's Name: Maximum Ride (Max)
Series: Maximum Ride
History: Maximum Ride, as she named herself, is the biological daughter of Jeb Batchelder and Dr. Valencia Martinez. Both were scientists who donated their genes to a project run by a company called Itex that was focused on creating a genetically superior being that was more "fit" to exist than regular human beings. (basically they're Nazis with test tubes.) Dr. Martinez was released from the project and never informed of its results, and she went on living as a veterinarian in western Arizona. Jeb stayed, raising Max and the five other human-avian hybrids that the project created. One day he kidnapped all six of them from the School, the facility where they were made, and moved them to a secluded house deep in the wilderness. For several years he raised them there, free from scientists and tests, just like normal children, teaching them about the world, computers, TV. He also taught them survival skills, hand-to-hand combat, how to fend for themselves. The children named themselves once they were old enough; Maximum, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, the Gasman (Gazzy) and Angel.
One day, Jeb vanished. The "flock", as they came to call themselves, assumed he was dead, since he had cared for them like a father and would surely die before giving them back to the scientists. Max assumed the position of leader, and their peaceful, isolated life continued--until one day, goons from the School came knocking. They kidnapped Angel, the youngest, to take her back with them. Furious, Max and the others set out across the country to rescue her. Along the way Max runs into some teenage boys harassing a young girl, and steps in to defend her, getting shot in the shoulder for her efforts. The girl, Ella, takes Max to her mother for treatment, who turns out to be none other than Dr. Martinez. Max has no choice but to reveal the secret of her wings to them, but they take it surprisingly well. Max is unaware of her real mother's identity, but trusts her instinctively, and ends up staying at her house for a few days while she recovers. When Dr. M takes her to get an X-ray to check how bad the injury was, she discovers a microchip implanted in Max's arm. This confirms one of the girl's worst fears--the people from the School knew where she was all along. She leaves hastily, to catch up with the others, troubled by this knowledge.
They eventually make it close to the School, but are caught first, regaining consciousness in the old, familiar cages they were kept in when they were younger. But Angel is there, alive, and she fills Max in on the tests they've been doing to her, as well as one more disturbing truth: Jeb is alive. And still working with the School. He talks to Max in private, telling her it's only a test and to trust him, but she refuses. Eventually the flock manages to escape, all together and free again, and head east in search of answers. Max begins to get terrible headaches and hears a strange voice in her head, telling her information she probably wouldn't know otherwise. The Voice leads them to New York City, to a place called the Institute of Higher Living. They break in to find many experiments not unlike themselves, being kept in cages, and set them all free. While they're at it, they hack into the Institute's computers and discover the files on their real parents, and set out to meet them. Unfortunately, the only one with no data to be found is Max.
On the way to Washington DC, the flock is attacked again and Fang is badly injured. They have no choice but to bring him to a hospital for treatment, where they are approached by the FBI and offered asylum in exchange for information about the people who made them. Max is skeptical, but agrees, and they stay at Director Anne Walker's house for a while, finally getting a taste of what normal life is like--going to school, making friends, teenage angst and all. However, things sour when they find that being normal just isn't possible for them--and especially when it turns out to be just another test, with Anne pulling the strings the entire time. She's the head of Itex and the mastermind behind the entire project, and the flock is on the run again, as usual. They eventually uncover the Director's ultimate plan: to kill off half the world's population, leaving the rest for their genetically-enhanced selves to rule over.
Hijinks ensue as Max and the flock travel across the country, exposing the company's machinations through an online blog while dodging everything Itex throws at them. Internal dissent causes them to split up for a while, and Max, Angel and Nudge fall into the Director's hands once more. Max is tested against Itex's greatest invention, a genetically enhanced boy named Omega, to see which of them is the "superior lifeform". Things look bleak, but then the other three show up to rescue them, as well as crowds of kids and young adults who read their blog and have come to help. They riot outside the headquarters, distracting the scientists long enough for Max and the others to escape and put an end to the Director's plan. In the end, Max is reunited with her real mother, Dr. Martinez. All is well in the world again...for now.
Personality: Max, in a word, is tough. She was raised not to trust anyone but herself and her flock, and is extremely wary of strangers. She has a sharp tongue and a rather passionate sense of justice; she may not like most people but she’ll fight for their rights and freedom. Until, of course, they do something to hurt someone else. While she’s not overly hostile unless someone appears threatening, she takes a while to warm up to people, and won’t completely trust somebody even if she calls them a “friend”. She usually shows a distant and snarky side to others, but with her “flock” she becomes warm and caring, almost like an older sister or a mother. She’s fiercely protective of them and won’t hesitate to fight for them.
Max also has a quick temper, especially with people who try to control her, or tell her what to do. She’s stubborn and hates losing, so she absolutely won’t give up if she feels like she’s been challenged. When it comes down to it, though, she’s still a fourteen-year-old girl, so she has her few moments of vulnerability, usually around Fang, whom she has a fairly obvious crush on.
Powers and Abilities: Most obviously? Max has wings. Though they don’t resemble any specific known bird species, they’re built like a raptor’s, specializing in speed and control. Her bones are hollow, and she has extra muscles that allow her to fly. She has fairly good maneuverability in the air.
Being genetically enhanced, she’s also very strong, probably about twice as strong as a grown man. Her weapon of choice is her hands and feet, and she’s been trained in hand-to-hand combat from a young age. Her regenerative abilities are also much faster than normal, though she isn’t anywhere near immortal. (ex: she can recover almost completely from a bullet wound within three or four days. However, if it hit a vital organ, she’d be in trouble.)
Despite her abilities, Max can easily appear to be a normal person among others. She can fold her wings up under her jacket, effectively hiding them.
Memory Lost: Loss of Skill [Flight]
Reason: Max may be pretty unhappy with the whole being-created-by-scientists situation, but it's clear that she wouldn't give up what she has just to be normal again. Being a girl with wings has made her who she is, and she's proud of that self. She's learned how to be strong, stand on her own, and protect those she cares about. And because of all that, she knows that her freedom is the most precious thing she has. So being stuck on the ground is pretty much one of her worst nightmares.
