Open RP: A Good Old-Fashioned Kansas BBQ

ooc: takes place Friday afternoon. Everyone is welcome!Washington DC doesn't see many perfect summer days. It's a city that lends itself more to a steely gray atmosphere, to faint, depressing drizzle that lasts for weeks, to granite monuments shrouded in fog. Today, however, the sun has won out against both politics and history, and has burst ( Read more... )

Miles looks around the backyard hands in his jean pockets. He didn't know anyone but the Senator so he hung back trying to keep out of everyone's way. He looked around smiling at the way the kids were running around.

"Miles! Hi!" He's suddenly having his hand shaken by a very enthusiastic member of Congress. "Glad you could make it. How's everything going?"

He blinked in surprise shaking his hand back,"Hi. Everything is going fine. How are you?"

"Good! Today's been a little frantic, but more or less okay." He looks around. "Pepper's here somewhere. You should meet her. She'll be joining us next week as my new assistant."

John isn't that good with social events. He had to hide and be careful for so long when he was with the Brotherhood - not that he hadn't been to them in the last year or so with the Brotherhood, but they were always with high security or promises of safety or in magical little pockets that Mike seemed to know about.

This was... a bbq. Just a regular, run of the mill bbq, and John had never been to one of those before. Not that he can remember, anyway.

He's out of place here, he knows. It's not that he's nervous or anxious or shy or anything like that - he's still has the self-confident set to his shoulders - but he doesn't know how to make himself fit in. And so he sort of hangs back a little bit, on the edge of the crowd, and watched family members talk and laugh and people coo over a baby and his social boyfriends mingle with the crowd.

He wonders how his life has become so civilian.

"Hi John."

Nic had spotted him looking vaguely uncomfortable, and has headed over to see him. "How are you doing? I heard there was a bit of an incident at the Center last week?"

"Oh, hey, Nic," John says, greeting her. "I'm okay."

There are some bruises on his face still fading but almost gone, and it's a damn good thing she couldn't see his ribcage, which was still pretty bruised looking, underneath the tape. But, of course, he wouldn't answer any other way.

"Uh, not at the Center, actually," John clarifies. "Away from it. I made sure it was away. But I'm fine, really."

She studies him a little doubtfully. "Well. If you're sure. So you and the boys are going to Kansas? I really envy you. I miss it. We all do. But Dylan's a bit small to travel at the moment. Which is why we seem to have brought most of Kansas here."

From the Kents of Smallville, Kansas, a note is sent along attached to two gift-wrapped boxes - one a gift for baby Dylan, and the other a gift for his adoring parents.

Dear Senator & Dr. Kelly,

I apologize for not being able to make it to the party today, but as you know, my husband and I don't get very many opportunities to leave the state. Please accept these gifts, one for Dylan and one for you, in our place. I hope the latter gift has held up well enough despite the long journey.

Enjoy the day, and I hope to see one or all of you in the near future.

With love,
Martha Kent

Dear Martha,

Thank you so much for the gifts. We regret that the pie didn't last very long at all (not with an army of small children around), and Dylan loves his bear. Hopefully Bobby will be able to make it to Smallville someday soon.

Best wishes,

Bobby, Nic, Beth, and Dylan

Terry would have loved to bring her guitar with her, having the chance to play with Mr. Kelly would have been fun, but she didn't think she'd be able to fit it in the Road Trip Car.

So instead she has a portable Guitar Hero game that she can't manage to figure out. Maybe one of the many kids running around will be able to.

She grabs herself some food and heads over to greet Mr. Kelly and meet Dylan for the first time.

Robert and a mini version of Iron Man catch up with her at the same time.

"Hey, is that Guitar Hero?"

"Hi Terry, glad you could make it."

Little Dylan stares at her with very big blue eyes.

Terry's head whips back and forth between the two, trying to decide who to answer first. She smiles at Robert.

"Hi, Mr. Kelly. Glad I could be here."

Then she turns to the little Iron Man. "Yeah, it is. I can't figure out how to work it. You wanna try?" she asks, and holds the toy out.

She glances back at Robert. "I'd offer Dylan to try, but if he actually got it I'd have to die of embarassment."

"Oh, he's not that into guitar music," Robert says. "At least not yet. He tends to cry if I start to play. Maybe he's a born critic."

Mini Iron Man has run off to go and hook up the game.

"So I hear you're off to Kansas with the boys?"

Jeanne-Marie has been riding in a car all day with four other people, she loves all four of these people dearly but with such cramed quarters she can't help but feel a little relieved when they finally pull up to the Kelly's house and enter the back yard.

That is until she sees the number of children that are running around wild.

The sunny smile that was forming falters and Jeanne-Marie follows her brother quietly, her movements becoming reserved and slightly nervous. And as soon as her brother becomes busy with his boyfriends Jeanne-Marie sneaks a cool drink and retreats to a shady spot under a tree, suddenly wondering if she should have just stayed in the car.

It isn't long before Nic, who has taken on the job of looking after all the guests who are trying to make themselves invisible, comes over. "Hi... Let me guess, Jeanne-Marie? I'm Nic."

ooc: um. I couldn't remember if they'd met already? I thought not...

Jeanne-Marie looks up from her position under the tree and smiles, "Hello, you're Mr.Robert's wife oui?"

OOC:I think they've only interacted online but never face to face. :)

"Guilty," Nic admits. "The spatula incident has gone down as legend in our household, I think."
