Barney’s Radio Version
by Robert Ormsby August 21, 2003

“Barney’s Radio Version” Between August 5 and 8 this summer, CBC Radio aired Howard Wiseman’s adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s tenth and last novel, ‘Barney’s Version’ in an outstanding production directed and produced by Gregory J. Sinclair. The novel is narrated by Barney Panofsky, a cantankerous schlock television producer who, on the verge of Alzheimer’s disease, plans to set straight the record of his life. The memoirs are ostensibly a riposte to fictional Can. Lit. icon Terry McIvor’s ‘Of Time and Fevers,’ in which Barney, who knew McIvor in Paris, is accused of alcoholism, wife abuse, intellectual fraud and possibly murder.
....
The drama is sustained by a host of other lively performances, but the one that truly stands out is Tom McCamus as Boogie. McCamus’ sarcastically smooth hipster delivery achieves its apotheosis after he has cuckolded Barney with The Second Mrs. Panofsky. Having been caught with his pants down, as it were, he explains himself with hilariously cold-blooded detachment: ‘I figured the only way to shut her up was to fuck her’.
