GS agent #1 Official Summary: GSA agents suddenly burst through the door of mutant Charlotte Cooke's (Emily Hampshire) apartment. One of the agents hits her friend, Skeet (Rob Stefaniuk), with his Taser, while another agent struggles to handcuff Charlotte. Just as the agents are about to flee with the two, Shalimar (Victoria Pratt) crashes through a skylight and attacks. In the chaos, Shalimar rescues Charlotte, but Skeet is hauled off to Genomex. Onboard the Double Helix, Shalimar senses tension between Adam (John Shea) and Charlotte. When they bring Charlotte to a mutant safehouse, Charlotte states that she would like to volunteer her extraordinary powers to help Mutant X. Adam knows that her ability to manipulate moral polarity - bad to good or good to bad - is amazing, but he knows she has a hidden agenda. At Sanctuary, Brennan (Victor Webster) informs Emma (Lauren Lee Smith) that Adam used to work with Charlotte's father, Anthony, in the biochemistry department at Stanford. When Adam discovered that Anthony was selling biological weapons, he turned him in. Anthony was convicted, but he committed suicide before the trial. Meanwhile at Genomex, Skeet informs Mason Eckhart (Tom McCamus) and his cohort, Lynch (Joseph Scoren), that Charlotte hates Adam and was hoping to join the Mutant X team so she could use her powers to sabotage him. Back at the safehouse, Adam refuses to allow Charlotte to join Mutant X. Enraged, Charlotte touches both Jesse (Forbes March) and Shalimar. A silvery oil-like substance secretes out of her fingertips and is immediately absorbed into their skin. Within seconds, they both become irate and begin brutally attacking one another. Knowing Charlotte caused this, Adam steps between the two until their anger subsides. When they turn their attention back to Charlotte, they realize she has fled. Adam sends Brennan and Emma out to find Charlotte, but warns them not to let her touch them. As they scout the area, Emma suddenly has a telempathic vision of Charlotte's location. The two find the girl hiding on a rooftop, but as they try to convince her to come with them, the door unexpectedly bursts open. Lynch, Skeet and three agents appear and attack. In the madness, Lynch grabs Charlotte and brings her to Eckhart, who has her demonstrate her abilities on one of his men. She explains that her powers only last a few minutes on mutants, but the effects are permanent on non-mutants. When Adam gets a call from Charlotte at her apartment, he immediately takes off alone, ignoring protests from the others. Convincing Adam that she's sorry, Charlotte affectionately touches him, and her silvery liquid oozes onto his arm. Adam realizes he's been deceived, but the effects of the liquid have already set in. Emma arrives on the scene, and oblivious that Adam is under Charlotte's powers, turns her back for a moment. Charlotte knocks her unconscious with a bottle. Telling Charlotte that he'll see her back at Genomex, Adam drags Emma out the door. He then contacts Shalimar and tells her that Charlotte has infected Emma, and he needs for her to set up the lab for surgery. In the Sanctuary lab, Adam preps Emma and orders Shalimar to bring him all the files on brain resystemization. Emma suddenly awakens and begins struggling with Adam, but he sedates her with an injection device. When Adam turns and realizes that Shalimar has been watching him, he goes after her. Knowing Adam is not himself, Shalimar calls for backup on her comlink. Adam shoots her with a tranquilizer gun. He then seals her, as well as Brennan and Jesse, inside a force field. The three become extremely worried that Adam is headed to Genomex to sell the disk containing the mutants' database. Back in the lab, Emma comes to and maneuvers the laser scalpel to cut through her restraints. Once freed, she finds the others and deactivates the force field, releasing them. Back at Genomex, Charlotte tries to leave after Eckhart reveals that it was really he who blackmailed her father into selling his research. It's not long, however, before Adam arrives and releases her from the holding cell. As they head towards Charlotte's apartment, they see Brennan, Jesse, Shalimar and Emma blocking their path up ahead. Without hesitation, Adam tosses a lighter into the window of a car leaking oil, and it explodes in flames. Brennan walks through the fire, and he and Adam attack each other. Shalimar comes to the rescue, but Adam puts her in a deadly chokehold. Emma pleads to Adam that he's choking the one who loves him more than anyone else, and Adam finally releases his grip. Remorseful for what she's done, Charlotte touches Adam's arm and the silver liquid gushes out of his pores, restoring him back to his normal self.
Quotes:
Emma: Hey, Brennan, how well does Adam know Charlotte?
Brennan: Well, Shalimar said that Adam worked with her father at the Biochemistry department at Stanford. That's all I know.
Emma: I think there's a little more to it than that.
Brennan: What've you got?
Emma: Her father was Anthony Cooke.
Brennan: That guy that was convicted for selling biological weapons?
Emma: Yes. And it was Adam that turned him in.
Brennan: Wow. Charlotte can't be too fond of Adam.
Emma: It gets worse. Cooke committed suicide before the trial.
Brennan: That's rough. What's her new mutancy?
Emma: She can manipulate moral polarity.
Brennan: Bad to good or good to bad?
Emma: I guess she could go either way.
Jesse: Adam, where does it say that you get to make the decisions for everybody?
Adam: What?
Shalimar: Jesse, are you okay?
Jesse: Was I talking to you?
Adam: Hey, what--
Jesse: Don't use that tone on me, Adam, I've had it!
Shalimar: And I've had it with your attitude too, Jesse.
Jesse: OOOHH!
Mason: Might I offer a piece of my own advice? Miss Cooke is a wounded animal. We must try to convince her that we are her collaborators, not her captors. In her mind, Adam is responsible for her father's death. She wants revenge. We must harness this energy. It's priceless.
Shalimar: I was completely out of control. I could have killed him.
Adam: Or he could have killed you.
Shalimar: Not likely.
Shalimar: Are we gonna put her in some kind of stasis and keep her here?
Adam: No, we can't do that to her. I'm the one who is responsible for what happened to her.
Shalimar: No you're not. It was her father who ruined her life, not you.
Adam: Well, that's not the way she sees it.
Shalimar: Exactly. She's blaming you for this, but if you hadn't stopped her dad, who knows what would've happened?
Adam: Shalimar, I have to help her. There's no one else who can do it.
Shalimar: Okay, are we talking about the same Charlotte? Because you're thinking of the little girl you used to know. I'm thinking about the woman who almost got us killed.
Adam: All right, so what are you suggesting?
Shalimar: I'm suggesting that if you insist on going after her, you watch your back.
Jesse: Shalimar, you okay?
Shalimar: Great. But I want a rematch.
Jesse: Well, you already kicked my ass. No chance you're getting a second shot.
Emma: No one escapes from Genomex. You can't trust her.
Adam: Emma--
Emma: At least let me come with you.
Adam: No, too dangerous, not gonna have anyone else exposed to that toxin.
Emma: How are you supposed to protect yourself against the toxin?
Adam: She wouldn't do that to me. She had the opportunity before, and she didn't do it.
Emma: Just think about it for a minute. Why would she come running back to us for help?
Adam: Well, maybe she saw what life would be like over there.
Emma: That's what she wants you to think!
Adam: Look, if it's a trap, I'll deal with it. Alone.
Adam: What am I gonna do with you?
Mason: Now we've come full circle. You've gotten back at Adam for what he did to your father, and done us a great service at the same time. So how does it feel?
Charlotte Cooke: Okay, I guess.
Mason: Do I detect a conscience? Your father exhibited the same tendencies till I convinced him he had no choice but to sell me his research.
Charlotte: My father?
Mason: I worked hard to convince him. The money, in the end, was his Achilles heel. Welcome to the GSA, Miss Cooke.
Adam: Where's that feral with my files? Then again, precision isn't exactly what's called for right now, is it, my little mind-bending freak of nature?
Shalimar: Adam? I knew there was something wrong with you.
Adam: Excuse me a moment.
Shalimar: Do you recognize the language?
Emma: It's Finnish. Adam doesn't realize I dated an exchange student from Helsinki in high school.
Mason: Nice to be back?
Adam: I have something for you. This is a complete list of all the children of Genomex. But you know, I was wondering.
How would I fit in here? I'm a leader, not a follower.
Mason: Well, I've always thought of myself as--uh--a team player.
Adam: Team player. That's good. That's very good. But of course we both know that's not true. You'd have me in stasis in what, 30 seconds? No, you know, I think you should try a little stasis yourself.
Adam: What is it exactly that happens to your electricity when you get wet? When you get soaked with water, Brennan? Huh? Try to explain the phenomenon to Charlotte over here so she can understand why it makes you so weak. And what do we know about you? What's your weakest moment? When you take a breath.
Emma: Adam, look into her eyes! You're choking the one person in the world who would do anything to protect you, who loves you more fiercely than anyone else.
Adam: I want to apologize to all of you for the way I treated you all.
Brennan: Forget it. You weren't yourself.
Adam: Yeah, but I was. Ask Shalimar, ask Jesse, they both experienced it.
Shalimar: Yeah, well you couldn't control yourself, that's all.
Adam: Well, maybe, but it was still me. And I know your weaknesses and I used them against you. It was very weird. It was very dark. But you guys saved me and I don't know what to say. Thank you.
Trivia & Nitpicks: Adam says when Brennan gets wet he becomes physically weak. Remember this for "Power Play."
Emma's non-telempathic ability #10: Though Emma’s never met Charlotte, she connects to her mind and gets images of what she’s seeing (she did something like this in "Crime of the New Century, but that was with Lisa's telepathic aid). This is a skill similar to what psionic Sam "The Reader" Raymond is capable of in "Once Around."
When the GS agents show up to grab Charlotte and Skeet, they pull Skeet out of the apartment’s front door twice.
How old is Charlotte? Sometimes she acts like she's 20, sometimes she acts like she's 15.
Charlotte touches Jesse first, so why does the effect wear off on Shalimar first? Just because she’s a feral?
In the scene in the lab following the Charlotte induced fight between Shalimar and Jesse, Shal has bruises on her left shoulder. She lands against massed Jesse on her hands, then he kicks her in the gut. Why is her shoulder bruised?
Fashion victim: You're Brennan. You're on a windy roof. Wouldn't you button your shirt so it didn't come undone?
On the roof with Brennan, Emma takes out her GS agent and then waits around, tapping her foot, until Brennan finally knocks his out before telling him that the GSA have taken Charlotte. This gives them the opportunity to get away.
When Charlotte demonstrates her powers on Lynch, he turns violent and evil. Shouldn't it have turned Lynch good too? It seems as though Adam's the only one who changed morality. The mutants all just seemed to become more violent for a minute, and then calm down. Skeet, for example, with the takeout food. He wasn't really evil, he was just physically expressing his anger at always having to eat takeout. Hee.
Also, I wonder who the poor sap that Charlotte tested her powers on before was. (The non-new mutant I mean.)
Charlotte fakes her tears when she calls Sanctuary in order to lure Adam out. Instead of wasting time arguing with Emma about whether she’s lying, why don’t they just use that nifty voice stress analyzer as they did on Eric in “Lit Fuse”? That would resolve the question right then and there.
RE: Adam going alone to see Charlotte. Adam's an idiot. Why does he always go alone? He always gets burned!
How come Adam doesn't have the same physical reaction to the toxin that Lynch, Jesse, and Shalimar have?
When Adam's menacing Emma in the lab, the lines they show in the opening are there. Wild.
When she wakes up, Emma seems slightly creeped out by the EDD. Or maybe it's just the scary laser beam she uses to escape and save the day! Yay Emma. Good thing she wasn't wearing sneakers. Seriously, though, she’s got stones of steel. That laser could have taken off her hand.
The dojo is apparently Mutant X proof. This seems like a bad idea. Someone could break in and contain them. Adam designed this when he was good. Why? Creepy guy! Creepy!
Emma dated an exchange student from Helsenki in high school. This does not explain why she knows how to say “Computer, deactivate force field”...unless, of course, she and her boyfriend were watching Star Trek reruns in Finnish.
The part where Shal and Jesse decide that Adam doesn't make mistakes like not knowing that Emma speaks Finnish is cute. They so want to believe that he's infallible and fighting being evil. They're so innocent.
Why would Mason tell Charlotte he's responsible for what happened to her father? She already wants out, why make it worse?
