Miranda Davis Official Synopsis: Brennan (Victor Webster) calls Jesse (Forbes March) and Shalimar (Victoria Pratt) from the 78' Camaro he just purchased as lightning flashes across the sky. Sensing a storm brewing, he promises to call them back. Without notice, the dashboard sparks and the car dies. Brennan pops the hood, but is distracted by bolts of lightning that seem to be hitting an invisible dome-like structure in a nearby field. Suddenly, a huge truck smashes into his car. As Brennan is thrown into the field by the blast, a bolt of lightning hits him and he disappears. He awakens in an unfamiliar home with a beautiful girl named Miranda Davis (Bree Williamson) by his side. She tells him that he's been asleep for a few hours. When Brennan questions her about her family, she tells him that her father disappeared when he stopped believing. Utterly confused, Brennan tries to contact the team via his comlink, but gets no response. Meanwhile, the team begins to worry about Brennan and sets out to search for him. Brennan becomes increasingly suspicious about New Hope when Miranda insists that the world ends on 8th street. He also finds it odd that she has no knowledge of what cars or movies are. As the two approach Brady’s general store, Miranda introduces Brennan to the patrons as Ben Gilbert, a citizen of New Hope who lives with his father Gerald, but who no one has seen for years. Inside the store, Brennan is surrounded and threatened by three young men, Josh (Gabriel Hogan), Lucian (Lee Rumohr) and Zander (Thomas Hauff). When he attempts to call Sanctuary from the old fashioned phone, the operator claims that the number doesn’t exist. Knowing he must find a way to escape, Brennan is suddenly zapped by a nasty shock as he races down 8th street. He then tries to form a tesla coil, but realizes his powers have vanished. Frustrated, he charges into the shimmering wall that surrounds the town at full speed, but cannot break through. Miranda doesn’t believe him when he insists that the wall is manmade. Lucian is ransacking Miranda’s house when he hears Brennan and Miranda enter. He grabs Brennan’s pocketknife and sneaks out. Meanwhile, Shalimar, Emma (Lauren Lee Smith) and Jesse begin to panic when they find the remains of Brennan’s Camaro. Back at Miranda’s house, Josh and Lucian confront Brennan and a brawl ensues. Brennan emerges victorious and as Miranda begins tending to his wound, the two end up making love. The next morning, Zander comes to Miranda’s to tell Brennan that he believes there is life outside the wall. Meanwhile, Virginia (Deborah Grover), the owner of the truck that hit Brennan, informs the team of an abandoned town that vanished after being purchased by scientist Alfred Marcus in the 40’s. Back in New Hope, Zander leads Brennan to a barn and shows him old photos of tattooed tribesmen. He admits that he thought Brennan was from the outside world when he saw his tattoo at Brady’s. Zander maintains that there’s no way out of New Hope and that people who stop believing are taken to the Town Hall basement and never return. Outside the barn, Josh stabs Zander dead with Brennan’s pocketknife as Lucian watches. Back at Sanctuary, Adam’s (John Shea) research shows that scientist Albert Marcus was working on creating an impenetrable force field. Meanwhile in New Hope, Miranda leads Brennan into the hands of Josh and his cronies after Josh convinces her that he saw him kill Zander. When Brennan is brought before two Judges, he denies killing Zander and insists his name isn’t Ben Gilbert, but Gerald Gilbert identifies him as his son, Brennan is sentenced to death. In the vacant field, the team finds the invisible wall Adam described. Deducing that the lightening storm Brennan encountered must have destabilized the wall long enough for him to slip through, Adam arrives with the Double Helix and releases silvery iodide in an effort to create an electrical storm. Back in New Hope, the citizens gather in the town square to witness Brennan’s execution. As he is pulled into the air, Miranda approaches Lucian and tells him that Josh said it was he who actually killed Zander. Lucian becomes enraged at the accusation and reveals that it was Josh who killed Zander. Miranda immediately yells for them to stop Brennan’s execution. Freed, Brennan knocks Josh to the ground before grabbing Miranda and taking off towards town hall. In the basement, they find the machine responsible for isolating the town from the rest of the world. Suddenly Josh bursts in with a gun and orders Brennan and Miranda back upstairs. Meanwhile, Adam and the team are hovering above the field in the Double Helix. As an electrical storm brews, Adam shoots out lightning from the craft in an attempt to burn out the field generator. Just as Josh is about to fire his gun, a beam of electricity blasts overhead and hits a tower. Within seconds, the wall disappears and the modern world is revealed.
Quotes: Brennan: A ‘78 Camaro, 45 thousand original miles. The guy wanted 15 G’s; I got him down to 13 five.
Jesse: Hm. 350 LT1 engine.
Brennan: Yeah, baby, the real deal. The book says there’s only a thousand in existence, and this is one of them. Even came with its own dancing hula girl on the dash.
Shalimar: Yeah, Brennan, as happy as we are you’ve managed to save a hunk of metal from the scrap heap, the rest of us just spent the last 12 hours down at the docks trying to find a stolen shipment of medical supplies.
Brennan: Hm. Guess that means you didn’t find it.
Shalimar: Don’t even start.
Brennan: All right, guys, you know what? This storm is coming in hard, and my connection’s going bad anyway. So I’ll call you when I get closer to town.
Shalimar: Connection’s going? Please. And he used to be a con man?
Emma: It’s an undercover job.
Shalimar: No, it’s a Brennan job, and he’s out screwing around with his hotrod.
Jesse: Let me see if I can get an ETA. Brennan? Brennan, do you copy?
Emma: I hope he’s okay. I mean, he said that a storm was coming, and who knows what condition that car was in.
Shalimar: Okay, can we talk some more likely scenerios for a second? White trash Camaro, Brennan, maybe a small town waitress with a taste for both? My guess is he’s probably just shacked up in some no-tell motel, using his “I think we have electricity between us” line.
Brennan: Where are all the cars at?
Miranda Davis: Cars?
Brennan: Yeah, you know, four wheels, vroom, vroom?
Brennan: Town is seriously whacked.
Miranda: I knew you’d come around.
Emma: We’ll go to the police station. I mean, somebody has to have seen him.
Shalimar: Don’t leave me here.
Lucian: You’re looking at the future head of town council.
Gerald Gilbert: Is that so? I had a feeling this town was headed in the wrong direction. Looks like there’s proof.
Miranda: We’re all the same here. You’re no different.
Brennan: Yeah, here maybe.
Brennan: If I didn’t have my life out there, I could see settling down in a place like this.
Miranda: You mean it?
Brennan: Yeah, it definitely has its charms.
Miranda: Well, then I’ll let you in on a little secret. I half believe that you are what you say you are, an outsider. But since they don’t exist, then that means I’m in love with an angel.
Adam: Alfred Marcus was a walking contradiction. He was a scientist, but he hated modern society. Now his dream was to create a self-sufficient community that was free of the negative influences of the outside world.
Emma: You can’t just decide to not be influenced.
Adam: Well, no, wait. Maybe you can. You see, one of the projects he was working on was a kind of electric bubble. It was an impenetrable forcefield that he could place over an entire town.
Shalimar: Oh, I don’t like the sounds of this.
Council member: We must ensure harmony. We’re doing the right thing.
Council member: Perhaps. But how many times do we have to kill the truth before it stays dead?
Gerald Gilbert: This place has become a prison. I don’t know what you’ve become.
Brennan: You took a big chance, helping me back there.
Miranda: I did what was right.
Brennan: Yeah, well, most people would have helped themselves.
Miranda: You’d have done the same for me, I know it.
Emma: You know, I grew up in Seattle. I can’t believe I’m actually praying for rain.
Adam: Everybody do me a favor, don’t touch the hull. Right now, we’re packing about a billion volts.
Jesse: A billion, huh?
Emma: It’s like going from a fishbowl to the Atlantic.
Adam: I kind of envy them. Now they get a chance to experience a fresh new world.
Shalimar: I don’t know. I’ve lived in that world my whole life. I don’t know how fresh it is.
Brennan: Small town living just isn’t for me.
Shalimar: Didn’t look like it from where I was standing.
Brennna: Yeah, well it has its moments.
Adam: Like Shakespeare said: A brave new world.
Trivia & Nitpicks: Special guest star: Bree Williamson (Miranda Davis) will go on to play Forbes March's girlfriend Tess/Jessica on the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live."
Sanctuary's computer automatically logs all incoming and outgoing calls.
The first six digits of Sanctuary’s phone number are 754-245. 745 is a Florida area code, though it's unlikely that Sanctuary's located in Florida (note the snow in "Inferno" and "Reality Check").
Perhaps made more cautious by his near-death experience in this episode, this is the last time Brennan uses his jet powers.
Emma states that she grew up in Seattle, though it isn't said whether this is with her real parents or her foster parents.
Miranda says that Brennan’s clothes "were damaged in the storm," showing that she knew there had been a storm the night before. The electronic bubble, therefore, can block the townspeople from seeing the sky (including airplanes, as Brennan notes), but doesn't shield the town from the elements.
Why would the electronic bubble prevent Brennan’s abilities from working? The force-field may block out the outside world, but the town has working lights, proving that other electrical things inside of it still function.
The people of New Hope have supposedly been out of contact with the real world for over a hundred years, but aside from Miranda's not understanding Brennan's "your town is seriously whacked," their speech has evolved much as it has in the world around them. Besides, Miranda's got a Canadian accent.
Leaving his views in "Whose Woods These Are" on 'satellite interference' by the wayside, Adam says the storm wouldn’t explain why Brennan’s comlink didn’t work.
The Double Helix, which nearly crashed under the charge of reversing Ashley Elliot's electrical current in "Lit Fuse," experiences no negative effects while carrying "a billion volts" in an iodide-induced lightning storm. Adam must have made some serious adjustments.
Brennan encourages Miranda to call him when she’s ready to leave New Hope. With Brennan and Jesse giving out their phone number to every pretty girl they see, is it any wonder that everyone knows how to reach Sanctuary’s private line?
We never do find out what happened to that missing shipment of medical supplies that Shalimar, Jesse, and Emma were trying to find in the first place.
Adam's final line, "O brave new world" comes from Act V, Scene I of William Shakespeare's play,
The Tempest, where Miranda exclaims, "O brave new world That has such people in't!"
