Caleb Mathias Official Synopsis:
Emma (Lauren Lee Smith) abandons her usually reserved nature when she goes to a popular club with Brennan (Victor Webster). She is swept away by Caleb Mathias (Andrew Martin), a brooding young man. In a moment of passion, the two kiss deeply, but suddenly Caleb's kiss turns evil. When he pulls away slightly, a blue glow which is literally sucking the life force out of her emanates between them. When Brennan finds Emma struggling to break from Caleb's embrace, he violently pulls the couple apart, ending the transfer before it was completed. The two men engage in a brutal fight, until Caleb finally runs off. After describing the incident to Adam (John Shea), Emma defies him by going back to the club with Brennan and Jesse (Forbes March) to investigate. They get nowhere with the tight-lipped waitress, Maria (Raven Duada), who had been eyeing Emma just before the incident with Caleb. Brennan is sure she knows more than she's telling. Meanwhile at Genomex, Eckhart (Tom McCamus) reports that six female mutant recruits have mysteriously died in the past five months. Eckhart's new second in command, Pamela Fries (Larissa Laskin), believes the deaths are the work of a mutant serial killer who lures his victims into submission, as none of them show signs of a struggle. Eckhart insists that the murderer be stopped immediately before any more mutants die. At Sanctuary, Shalimar (Victoria Pratt) learns about the six missing female mutants and informs Adam, who orders Emma off the streets immediately. Just as Brennan and Jesse are about to take her back to Sanctuary, an angry and vengeful Caleb returns. He and Brennan battle once again, unaware that Pamela is watching from a parked GSA car. Convinced she's found her serial killer, Pamela guns the accelerator and races forward. Jesse pulls Brennan to safety, but Caleb is not so lucky. Emma discovers that Caleb is far from dead, however, when he suddenly appears at Sanctuary. When Brennan and Jesse watch surveillance tapes from the morgue which show Caleb walking out of the building with Pamela, that they realize that he has the ability to resurrect himself from the dead. Back at the club, Emma and Shalimar look for clues when Emma simply vanishes. She awakens to find herself handcuffed in a dark cellar with Caleb and Pamela, whom he has also taken prisoner. When Caleb leaves, Pamela informs Emma that the GSA will eventually find her through her tracking device. With some convincing, Emma and Pamela pool their powers to release Pamela from her shackles. Once Pamela is free, she is reluctant to help Emma. Tossing a key that falls at Emma's feet, Pamela tries to escape, but Caleb returns and lunges at her. Pamela uses her mutant powers to freeze him to death, but he revives himself and overpowers her. Kissing her deeply, he re-charges himself with her life force, dropping her lifeless body. When he turns his attention to Emma, she warns him that the GSA will be there any moment because of Pamela's tracking device. Caleb hauls Pamela's body upstairs and dumps it in a closet. By the time he returns, Emma has freed herself with the key and is about to flee. Caleb, feeling deceived, sucks the life force out of her as well. Meanwhile, Eckhart is more anxious than ever to get his hands on Caleb to study his DNA. Back at the club, Brennan learns that Maria is actually a mutant who has been helping Caleb track down his prey to avoid becoming his next meal herself. When she refuses to reveal Caleb's whereabouts, Shalimar convinces Maria to offer her to Caleb. Tragically, by the time Shalimar gets to Caleb's cellar, Emma is dead. Enraged, she takes Caleb out with a fatal blow, before reporting Emma's death to Adam, who is stunned and saddened. Adam, realizing this is precisely the moment when Caleb will rise again and need to feed, tries to warn Shalimar, but she's too distraught over Emma to hear him. Sure enough, Caleb comes to and goes after Shalimar. Brennan arrives in the nick of time and throws an arc of electricity, killing Caleb. Suddenly, a strange glow emanates from Caleb's mouth, as the life force drains from him and is returned to Emma. Back at Genomex, Eckhart is frustrated when Pamela comes back to life, seeing her resurgence as a lost research opportunity.
Quotes:
Emma: Don't waste your time; she's not interested.
Brennan: Uh-huh. Maybe she's interested; she just doesn't know it yet.
Pamela Fries: Mr. Eckhart, the killer you sought is dead, finally putting an end to his rampage.
Mason: Yes. I understand your weapon of choice was a GSA vehicle.
Pamela: I must admit my methods were a little unorthodox, but I didn't want to risk losing him.
Ken Harrison: Were you at least able to retrieve the remains of Mr. Mathias? So we can perform an autopsy.
Pamela: Well...there was a commotion...
Ken: Miss Fries. In order to truly understand the criminal mind and to prevent this catastrophe from happening again, it is imperative we have a subject to examine.
Mason: Perhaps the next time you decide to do a hit and run, you'll be prudent enough to pick up the body before you run.
Emma: Why are you following me?
Shalimar: 'Cause I'm worried about you.
Emma: You're worried that I'm losing my mind and that I'm seeing things.
Shalimar: You know that's not true, Emma.
Emma: Sorry, this was a waste of time.
Shalimar: Not if it put your mind at ease. I don't mind looking.
Caleb Mathias: Welcome to my world. My home.
Pamela Fries: Morning.
Emma: Why are you doing this, Caleb?
Caleb: I don't have a choice. I have to survive.
Pamela: What do you want, sympathy? You filthy parasitic freak.
Caleb: Well, aren't you the bold one? Nice try, Emma. But your little mind games won't work on me.
Emma: What are you going to do with us?
Caleb: Never ask a question that you don't want answered.
Emma: Now try me. Pamela!
Pamela Fries: I don't think so. Eckhart's got this thing about us helping the other side. Sorry.
Pamela Fries: Now that was cool!
Shalimar: I'm going to make this real easy for you. I know you know where Caleb has my friend.
Maria: Look--
Shalimar: No, you look. All I'm asking you to do is what you've done for this creep time and time again. Tell him you've found another one. Take me to him. Now.
Jesse: When are you going to learn to stay down?
Brennan: Yo! Kiss yourself goodbye. Your nine lives are up.
Mason: Pity she couldn't be more helpful. I'm afraid the only thing left for her to tell us is the method by which she died. Forensically speaking, of course.
Ken Harrison: Hopefully, we can discover how the new mutant absorbs the life force of the other new mutants. [Pamela sits up]
Pamela Fries: What's going on?!
Mason: Well, so much for the autopsy.
Shalimar: Are you sure you should be out partying like this?
Emma: I'm fine! Besides, this is exactly what I needed.
Seth Howard: How are you two doing?
Brennan: Hey. Wanna take a hike?
Jesse: You heard him.
Seth: Next time.
Brennan: Yeah, right.
Emma: Okay, this is ridiculous, you guys. I'm fine. I can handle myself. Now go out there and have some fun. Or at least let me. I mean it, go!
Brennan: Be good.
Shalimar: Yeah, right.
Adam: Can I buy you a drink?
Emma: How about a dance?
Adam: Okay.
Emma: Okay.
Adam: And then I'll buy you a drink.
Trivia & Nitpicks: Lazarus Syndrome: In Which Everyone in Mutant X is Very Overprotective of Emma
We learn that GS agents have tracking devices implanted in them.
At the very beginning, why doesn't Emma just tell Brennan that the girl he's trying to hit on is there with her boyfriend? Not that that would have stopped him...
Continuity: The good kind. Emma orders a virgin daiquiri. This ties in nicely with Badass!Emma's describing Scared!Emma as The Teatotaler Version in "Double Vision." Now if we could just figure out that Amaretto Sour in "Whiter Shade of Pale"...
Brennan teases her mercilessly about her drink selection. And then Caleb buys her drink. Which, I gotta think is a little odd, given she's talking to Brennan. Unless he's been watching long enough to see Brennan trying to flirt. Now I see no reason Emma shouldn't have gone to dance with him, but really, would the two seconds for an "Excuse us" to Brennan have killed her?
Very annoying plot point: Of course, given he then spent as much time as possible keeping an eye on them a "Buzz off" might've been more appropriate. Unless Brennan's powers include precognition--it was *lucky* he was being a chauvinistic jerk.
And then we know where Brennan gets this protectiveness from. It's very clear in the first scene in Sanctuary when Adam says, "I don't understand. Where were you when all this was happening?" He sounds like a parent bawling out a teenager for leaving their 10 year old sibling alone. Hello? Emma's a big girl. 19. Actually, given that Brennan's teasing her about not drinking, probably 21 (unless they're in Canada). This trend extends as far as Shalimar acting like a frantic mother having lost a small child when she gets back to find Emma's comlink and no Emma.
After Caleb has taken some of Emma's life force in the form of a pink gas that oddly resembles Lorna's pheremones (“Deadly Desire”), they are mentally joined somehow (similar to the way Shal and Ashlocke will be later on) and her psionic abilities don't work on him. Or so he says. A similar mental link will occur in Season 2's "Inferno" between Emma and another dead man. Apparently, lack of brain function doesn't preclude a mental connection with a psionic...
Pamela Fries (or Freeze, it's pronounced freeze) can lower and raise her body temperature. Oh the pun of it all.
After Jesse knocks Brennan out of the path of Ms. Fries's car, why doesn't he just move himself instead of phasing?
And again Emma is meditating in a darkened Sanctuary. Is she sitting on an X?
Adam's very condescending when Emma tells him Caleb is alive, but has the boys do some hacking anyway.
How did Caleb get Emma to ditch her comlink? Did I miss something?
Really, what did Emma expect from a GS Agent? (This leads right into "Interface” doesn't it?)
Speaking of GS Agents, someone needs to make them watch Dr. Who. What's up with the freaking high heels? NOT appropriate footwear for that line of work.
My next question is: there's a good three minutes where Caleb is busy with Pamela. Why is Emma not unlocking her cuff and kicking ass? I mean, she doesn't have her psychic blasts yet, but she's not exactly helpless. Plus two against one are better odds.
Why do Jesse and Brennan keep pestering the bartender? I thought Emma was the psychic one.
This is quite probably a chauvinistic episode, as once they realize that Caleb goes for beautiful, female new mutants, Adam makes Shalimar go back to Sanctuary. Not that our Intrepid Feral stays there for long. Then after she kills Caleb the first time, she's so busy crying over Emma that Brennan and Jesse have to take out Caleb. (Funny how Shal and Brennan end up killing people every time Emma dies.) And Adam's response, "Get back to Sanctuary now." *strangled scream*
When Emma's life force comes back, I'm reminded of special effects of the voices from Hush. More proof that Mutant X should've been a Joss Whedon show?
So why do the guys just smile at revived Emma? If there was ever an excuse for a group hug... Boys! (-8
