Official Synopsis: Shalimar (Victoria Pratt) and Brennan (Victor Webster) are at a science fair with teenager Megan Morrison (Mary Ann Stevens), the daughter of Senator Morrison (Janet Laine-Green), who they’ve been assigned to watch due to recent death threats against the Senator. In the parking garage the three are approached by two thugs who demand that Shalimar and Brennan hand Megan over. As one of the thugs grabs Shalimar, she sends him flying with a swift punch. Brennan then fires up a tesla coil, but is suddenly enveloped by his own electricity and lifted high into the air. Shalimar runs to Brennan, but is knocked out by a blast of his electricity. During the chaos, the thugs grab Megan and leave. Shalimar awakens to see electricity exploding uncontrollably from Brennan. Blaming Adam (John Shea) and the team for Megan’s abduction, the Senator informs him that she’s hired investigators and will no longer need his help. Overhearing their conversation, Brennan apologizes to Adam for losing Megan. Adam assures him it wasn’t his fault and promises to determine what caused his powers to fail. Moments later, Brennan becomes even more discouraged when he overhears Emma (Lauren Lee Smith) and Jesse (Forbes March) speculating that his powers may be killing him. Meanwhile, the kidnapper tells Megan, who’s been brought to a vacant warehouse, that her life depends on her mother’s cooperation. Senator Morrison’s head of security, Simon (Karl Pruner), is having tracking devices installed in the phone lines when Adam, Emma and Jesse storm in. Emma hits him with a telempathic burst, giving Jesse time to adhere a chip to the tracking device that will allow them to monitor all the Senator’s calls. Back at Sanctuary, Brennan loses control of his emotions when Adam asks him to sit this one out and assigns Shalimar to lead the team on Megan’s rescue mission. Brennan’s rage turns into raw energy and a stream of electricity shoots from his arm, knocking Jesse down and Brennan unconscious. Sensing the team’s concern, Adam assures them he’s working to stabilize Brennan’s powers. When the kidnapper contacts the Senator, he demands five million dollars from her campaign fund as ransom for Megan. Monitoring the conversation, Jesse tracks the call and he, Emma and Shalimar take off. They arrive at a dairy factory only to find that they’ve been fooled by an elaborate computerized phone setup. As Jesse fiddles with the keyboard, the kidnapper’s voice suddenly fills the room. He says they shouldn’t have tracked the call and then activates a bomb, the team narrowly escapes the explosion. Meanwhile, Brennan, feeling useless, convinces Emma to tell him what leads she’s uncovered. She informs him that she’s been investigating Simon and has learned he was involved in a similar kidnapping years before. Moments later, when Adam informs Brennan he’s still not found a cure to stabilize his powers, Brennan storms off. Brennan finds Simon and confronts him about the kidnappings. When Simon denies being involved, Brennan becomes enraged and he begins emitting sparks. Admitting he’s part of the ransom scheme, Simon breaks down and reveals the kidnapper’s name is Christian (Daniel Kash). Totally losing control, Brennan knocks Simon to the ground with an electrical shock, before falling unconscious himself. He wakes up to find an angry Shalimar, who informs him that Adam’s found a cure and that they need to get back to Sanctuary with Simon immediately. Meanwhile, Adam and Jesse are filling the Senator in on Simon’s involvement, when Christian calls and demands that Simon deliver the money at 8 p.m. Back at Sanctuary, Adam explains that Brennan’s genes are mutating faster than his brain can handle, and he believes Emma’s powers can help stabilize him. Brennan creates a tesla coil, which quickly envelops his body. Just as the electricity reaches its climax, Emma zaps him with a telempathic burst. The intensity causes an explosion, knocking both of them to the ground. As they get up, Brennan fires off a shot of electricity, which he’s completely able to control. Outside the warehouse where Megan’s being held, Jesse attaches an electronic device to Simon’s chest, telling him it will shock him if he goes against the plan. Terrified, Simon enters the building and shows Christian the money. Shalimar and Jesse watch through a window and see one of Christian’s thugs aim a gun at Simon. Before the thug can pull the trigger, however, Emma appears and hits him with a telempathic burst. Brennan then fires up a massive tesla coil, but before he can shoot it, Christian pulls out a remote device that will activate explosives attached to Megan. Jesse phases through a wall and takes out the thug, while Shalimar ambushes Christian, kicking the device out of his hand. Brennan then shoots a bolt of electricity at the metal briefcase in Christian’s hand. The briefcase explodes and Christian falls to the ground. When the team finds Megan, Brennan surrounds her with a whirlwind of energy, while Jesse phases her body, making her transparent long enough to pull the bomb from her neck. After the ordeal, Senator Morrison and Megan express their gratitude for Mutant X’s help. Adam, still feeling guilty for the pain Brennan suffered, assures him he’ll do further research to try to control the negative effects of their evolving mutations.

Quotes:
Shalimar: You and Adam are a lot more alike than either one of you would care to admit.
Brennan: Shal, Adam’s not the one whose body is falling apart.
Shalimar: He’s on it. You can’t lose faith.
Brennan: That’s easy for you to say, standing in your shoes.
Shalimar: Hey, you know what? I know you’re hurting right now, so I’m gonna let that one go. But let me make one thing perfectly clear. If this is about your mutation taking another step, then it is about me. It’s about all of us, and you know what? I still have faith.

Jesse: Maybe what’s happening to Brennan was supposed to happen. Maybe his accident wasn’t an accident at all, but was just a natural progression of his mutation.
Emma: No, that’s not true.
Jesse: Come on. None of us want anything bad to happen to Brennan. God, he’s closer than my own family. But we are all continuing to mutate, and sooner or later that mutation’s gonna go out of control.
Emma: You don’t know that.
Jesse: You’re right, I don’t know that. But maybe I’m right. Maybe we’re like a comet or lightning bolt that burns brightest right before we die.
Emma: Brennan is not dying.
Jesse: I hope to God you’re right. But right now, Adam doesn’t have the answers, which means that nobody does, and that’s scaring me.

Jesse: What does it mean for the rest of us, Adam?
Adam: All right, look, I know that you’re all worried that your powers are mutating. But right now there is no reason to think that any of you are in any danger.
Emma: Yet.
Adam: I am not gonna give up here. I am gonna find a way to stabilize Brennan and I am gonna make sure that nothing bad happens to any of you. You just have to trust me.
Brennan: I could have killed Jess. I could have killed any of us.
Adam: Believe me, I am gonna do everything in my power to make sure that that doesn’t happen. See, I know you’re all thinking about Gabriel Ashlocke. You’re all wondering whether you’re gonna self-destruct like he did, right?
Brennan: Why don’t you look me in the eye and tell me that’s not gonna happen?
Adam: Ashlocke’s genes were at the point of ripping themselves apart. Your genes are highly unstable, but I believe that that is a result of a reamping of your power. And I have to find a way to allow you to control it.
Brennan: So what if you don’t? Do we all just go up like a big bang?
Adam: All right, Brennan? Right now you have to learn how to control your emotions because I believe that that is triggering the problem.
Brennan: Adam, do you have any idea how it feels like to walk around like a living time bomb? To know that at any second I could explode and kill Shalimar, Jesse, you, anyone? I walk around with these thoughts in my head every single day and you want me to control my emotions? Are you out of your mind?
Adam: All right, I know that I don’t know how you feel, but I do know that every time you lose your temper, your power overloads. So until I can allow you to restore conscious control, you have to stay calm.
Brennan: Stay calm? Adam, there’s a little girl that’s in danger because of me, okay? And one minute I go from owning this to feeling my body tear itself apart.

Brennan: Why don’t you just admit that I’m dying?
Adam: Cause I’m not gonna admit that and you shouldn’t even think it.
Brennan: I don’t believe you, Adam. You know, you don’t even believe it yourself. I fought for you and what you stood for. But what you did to us? Adam, I accepted my fate. I made it my own. But you lied to us. I’m not doing it your way anymore.
Adam: Listen, I can help you. I just don’t want to put you in any more danger. Now why can’t you understand that? I am not gonna let you die.
Brennan: It’s too late! Okay, I’m sorry. I’ve got something I’ve got to do.
Adam: Anything you do you put yourself in danger, do you understand that?
Brennan: You know, the reality is, Adam? I got nothing to lose.

Shalimar: That is by far the dumbest move you have ever made.
Brennan: Is he dead?
Shalimar: No, we’ll bring him with us.
Brennan: Bring him where?
Shalimar: Back to Sanctuary, Brennan. Back to Adam. And I’m not asking you to come with me, I’m telling you. Look, I know you’re scared. We all are. I don’t care about that anymore. What I do care about is you..
Brennan: I’m sorry.
Shalimar: At least you’re consistent. Did he tell you where Megan is?
Brennan: Yeah. He told me everything.
Shalimar: Fill me in on the way. Let Adam take care of you, Brennan. He says he has a fix and you have to try it. Whatever he works out for you might just save all of us.

Shalimar: What was that you strapped to his chest?
Jesse: Oh, hell if I know. Some adhesive tape and old computer parts.

Adam: The truth is, I can’t even predict which one of you is gonna be the next to mutate out of control, much less how I’m gonna treat it.
Brennan: That’s gotta make you feel pretty helpless.
Adam: Yeah, it does. Okay? Because I’m supposed to be the guy with all the answers, and I don’t have them. And until I do, I can’t rest until I know exactly what makes you all tick.
Brennan: And hopefully what keeps us ticking.
Adam: Yeah, that too.

Brennan: Hope I’m not shocking your Chakra.
Emma: Come on in.
Brennan: So I just wanted to come by and tell you that I thought you were pretty terrific last night.
Emma: Are you sure you don’t have that the other way around?
Brennan: Emma, if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be here right now.
Emma: I doubt that very much.
Brennan: Please. You saved my life, and I will never forget it. Why did you do it? I mean, you had no idea what could have happened. You could have died.
Emma: Look, it’s not like I have a choice, Brennan. I mean, we’re all in the same boat. What do you think you would have done if it was my powers spinning out of control? Run and hide?
Jesse: If that was an option. It’s not our style.
Shalimar: No, we stick together till the bitter end.
Brennan: All right, so let me ask you all a question. Which one of you actually thought that I was buying my last ticket out of here?
Jesse: You kidding? That never crossed our mind, man.
Emma: Yeah, we knew you’d bounce back.
Shalimar: Never doubted if for a minute.
Brennan: Hm, really? Man, you guys are lousy liars.

Trivia & Nitpicks:
Special guest writer: Actor Freddie Prinze Jr.

This episode's title, "One Step Closer," might come from the kidnapper Christian's warning to Mutant X: "Take one more step. Go on, take one step closer and the senator’s daughter loses everything from the neck up."

Adam admits to Brennan that he doesn’t have a handle on the direction their mutations are going to take. Though he will have figured this out by the end of the next season, he won’t tell the team, despite his revelation in “Within These Walls.”

As Brennan’s abilities begin to go haywire in the parking garage, the lights overhead begin to flicker. When this occurs in Sanctuary, however, the lights stay on.

Shalimar calls Sanctuary to let Jesse know Megan was kidnapped, but this time, she doesn’t feel the need to preface her message with, “Guys, it’s Shalimar,” as she did in "Final Judgement." Heh-heh.

By bizarre coincidence, the kidnapper’s using the same candles as Emma has in her room, except that he lights his with a blowtorch.

Adam with a stethoscope! 'Nuf said.

Adam tells the team that Gabriel’s genes were at the point of ripping themselves apart, while Brennan’s powers are merely experiencing a re-amping, which he can learn to consciously control-with help from Emma. But why would losing his temper affect Brennan’s control over his abilities? With the exception of Michelle Bigelow, we've never seen that in any of the mutants before.

As Jesse, Shalimar, and Emma enter the empty warehouse prior to the explosion, it shouldn’t be too hard for either of them to notice that there’s nobody inside.

Adam (to Brennan): Your body is mutating faster than your mind can keep up with the change. [LOL. Nah, I won’t go there. Too easy...]

Since they don’t trust Simon Fletcher, they decide to bring him to their secret headquarters to wire him? At least in “Deadly Desire” they were smart enough to take Carl Ames to a safehouse instead, and even that was risky.

Jesse, after a second of looking, announces that he can’t find a back door to the C4 necklace on Megan. Even if that were the case, why don’t they just look for the controller that Christian had in his hand?

If Brennan fills the air around Megan with electrostatic impulses like the ones in Megan’s body, should Jesse be able to phase her head? After all, it was Brennan’s safe zone that was meant to keep Jesse from phasing into non-existence in “Power Play.”

If Brennan needs some alone time, why doesn’t he go to his room instead of commandeering Emma’s?

When Emma pulls up Simon Fletcher's record on her computer, his name appears as "Simon G. Blake." Oops.
