Official Synopsis: Shalimar (Victoria Pratt) and Brennan (Victor Webster) are playfully chasing each other around Sanctuary when Lexa (Karen Cliche) interrupts them. She says the Dominion has asked them to meet a woman named Samantha Bennett (Rachael Crawford) at Broder Biochem who has information that could save hundreds of lives. After waiting for Samantha at Broder Biochem for over an hour, Brennan leaves to search for her. He soon runs into her and she quickly hustles him down a hall, explaining that she was detained at Loire Industries and that they don't have much time. She takes him into a restricted access area where two mutants are preparing to detonate a bomb. One of the mutant's fires a burst of dark energy at Samantha, but Brennan pushes her to safety and fires off a telsa coil. When the second mutant hurls sharp needles at him, Brennan dodges them and hits him with a telsa coil as well. The blast inadvertently knocks the mutant into the bomb's trigger switch and as the deadly countdown begins, Samantha grabs Brennan and seconds later, he finds himself back in Sanctuary playing around with Shalimar. When Lexa enters and tells the team that they need to go to Broder Biochem right away, Brennan thinks it's a joke since they just came from there, but soon realizes something unusual is happening. After telling them about the failed mission at Broder Biochem, he rushes off to Loire Industries, hoping Samantha is there and can shed light on the situation. Meanwhile, Lexa heads to Broder Biochem while Shalimar and Jesse (Forbes March) investigate Loire Industries. When Brennan arrives at Loire Industries, he zaps the guard and runs inside. He bursts into the room where Samantha is tied to a chair and fires a bolt of electricity at the man who is guarding her. Another guard appears and shoots him in the arm, but Brennan shoots him back with a tesla coil and frees Samantha. Back at Sanctuary, Jesse comlinks Lexa after learning that Lawrence Bosch (Alan Blenkinsopp) runs Loire Industries. Lexa informs them that Bosch has killed hundreds of people in his quest to develop genetically based drugs. Now knowing Bosch is connected to their mission, Shalimar and Jesse head to Broder Biochem to help Lexa. Meanwhile, Brennan drives as Samantha bandages his wound and explains that she is a mutant with the ability to throw her consciousness back in time a short distance. He is the first person, however, to remember traveling with her and that it may be because he too is a mutant. She then asks his help in trying to stop the bomb, as she's been unable to in her previous attempts. Arriving at the facility, Shalimar's feral senses detect blood and as she leads Lexa and Jesse toward it, she comlinks Brennan to tell him they may have found the bomb. Brennan warns them that their lives are at risk, but they don't listen. Jesse then phases Shalimar and Lexa inside a room where they find an executive dead on the floor and the two mutants standing by the bomb. Brennan and Samantha burst onto the scene and Brennan hits one of the mutants with an electricity bolt as Lexa takes the other one out with a blast of light. Brennan then rushes towards the bomb, but one of the mutants staggers to his feet and hits the trigger. Samantha immediately grabs Brennan and he once again finds himself in Sanctuary with Shalimar. He tells the team to wait for him while he goes to Loire Industries to get Samantha. When they return to Sanctuary to explain what's happening, Samantha tells the team that Bosch's most profitable drugs are threatened by Broder Biochem's new genetic technology and that he's planting a bomb inside the building. As Jesse and Lexa work on a plan to disarm the bomb, Lexa reveals that Bosch killed her former team members and, therefore, he is on her hit list. Samantha confides to Brennan that Bosch used her abilities in research for his drugs and when she learned of his plans for the bomb, she knew she had to stop him. Back at Broder Biochem, Brennan and Samantha lead Jesse to the room where the bomb is. Brennan comlinks Shalimar and Lexa to let them know that they're ready to move in, but when Lexa doesn't respond, the team proceeds without her. They burst into the room, take out the mutants and Jesse examines the bomb. Outside the facility, Lexa sees Bosch in a limo, but when he spots her, he uses a remote to trigger the bomb. Just then Jesse informs the team that the bomb is armed. Samantha again grabs Brennan, but this time, they only travel back to the point when Brennan first brought her to Sanctuary. Samantha explains that she couldn't take them all the way back because her condition is weakened from the constant use of her powers. Brennan fills the team in on everything except for Bosch's involvement and shows Jesse what the bomb looks like. The team then realizes that the elevator shaft should contain the blast if Jesse is unable to disarm the bomb. Wanting to buy them some time, Samantha takes Brennan back to when he was with Shalimar and he quickly explains the situation to her as he leaves for Loire Industries. Meanwhile, Lexa becomes eager to face Bosch when she learns through her contact at the Dominion that he is connected to Loire. A short time later, Shalimar, Jesse and Lexa meet Brennan at Broder Biochem. When the mutants arrive with the bomb, Mutant X takes them out and put the bomb in the elevator. Noticing Lexa has suddenly disappeared, Brennan sends Shalimar to find her. Finding Lexa outside, Shalimar confronts her, but Bosch sees them and runs Shalimar over with his limo. Lexa relays this to Brennan, who begs Samantha to turn back time again to save his friend. With Samantha's powers fading, she is only able to send Brennan back a few moments. Before he goes, he warns Lexa not to go after Bosch until the bomb is disarmed. When the mutants arrive, one of them hits Brennan with a metal shard and he goes down. Overwhelmed by the thought of losing Brennan, Samantha immediately travels back and leaps in front of Brennan, taking the hit instead. After the team takes the mutants out, Jesse phases his arm through all the wires on the bomb, masses out and cuts them simultaneously, diffusing the bomb. Seconds later, Samantha dies in Brennan's arms.
Quotes: Shalimar: [holding Brennan's little black book] How many girls you got in this thing?
Brennan: Not enough.
Shalimar: Am I in here? How many stars did I get?
Brennan: None. Now give it back.
Jesse: Bad milk.
Shalimar: Well, next time why don't you check the expiration date, Einstein?
Lexa: Look, we're gonna need a floor plan of Broder Biochem ASAP...after you clean that up.
Brennan: Okay, if this is some kind of joke, it's not funny, guys. We were just at Broder.
Lexa: Okay, you have got to stop kicking his head.
Shalimar: You know, Brennan wants us to wait.
Lexa: Yeah, and he's out of his mind. We're going to Broder.
Jesse: Maybe he knows something we don't.
Lexa: What? And how?
Shalimar: I don't know, but don't you think we should give him the benefit of the doubt?
Jesse: I agree with her.
Lexa: Suit yourselves.
Shalimar: I'll get her the floor plan. Why don't you see what you can find out on Loire Industries--God, that smells.
Brennan: I'm sorry.
Guard: Sorry for what?
Brennan: [zaps him] About the headache you're going to have when you wake up.
Lexa: You two need to get here fast.
Shalimar: We still haven't been able to get a hold of Brennan.
Lexa: Look, do what you want, all right? Let's hope nobody dies while you're waiting around for him.
Shalimar: What took you so long?
Brennan: You know, I've already died twice today. It kinda sucks your time up a little.
Brennan: Bad milk. Baaaad milk...
Jesse: So what's your connection to Bosch?
Lexa: He's crossed my path before. This will be the last time.
Jesse: And what's that supposed to mean?
Lexa: It means I have a little list of people I wouldn't leave breathing if I saw them again.
Jesse: Isn't that a little grim?
Lexa: My way of making the world a nicer place. See, Bosch is one of the top 10. If he is behind this explosion, he'll be there just to enjoy watching people die. It's the perfect chance to take him down.
Jesse: This isn't getting too personal, is it?
Lexa: It's personal enough. I was on a mission to shut down one of his research stations in South America. There were 40 dead research subjects found dead in his lab. He got away, killed a couple of guys on my team doing it. I'm not letting him get away with that.
Jesse: Yeah, but Lexa--
Lexa: Don't worry, Jess. I'd do the same for you.
Brennan: How'd you get into this?
Samantha Bennett: I was working for Bosch. He was testing some very powerful genetically engineered drugs. He'd use them on test subjects, I'd watch the results, throw my consciousness back in time--
Brennan: And then you would give him the results before the experiment took place.
Samantha: He'd alter the drug and then try again. He didn't have to worry about the consequences, but I had to watch it all. Some of the side effects were terrible, and I had to watch these people suffer hundreds of times. It was horrible.
Brennan: C'mon. Why didn't you leave?
Samantha: Because he would've done the same experiments anyway. At least this way I kept those people from dying.
Jesse: Okay. The good news is, it's not armed.
Brennan: And the bad news is?
Jesse: Everything else.
[Catching Brennan and Samantha about to kiss]
Shalimar: Twenty minutes. That's a new record for ya.
Brennan: You know this is all Lexa's fault. She turned this whole mission into a personal vendetta. All she can think about is Bosch.
Jesse: This is getting heady. You're saying you're upset at Lexa for something that hasn't even happened yet?
Brennan: No, it happened. Look, she got us killed. Look, she's gonna want Bosch's name and Samantha's connection to Loire Industries. You can't give her any of that.
Jesse: Have you tried telling her the truth?
Brennan: Well, she can't be trusted!
Jesse: She's a member of the team.
Brennan: Jess, no. We can't take that risk.
Jesse: I think you're making a mistake.
Brennan: Well, I'll wear that, okay?
Jesse: Okay. I died?
Brennan: Oh, yeah.
Shalimar: Jesse can hack into it and find out.
Brennan: No, he can't. We need to concentrate on the bomb.
Lexa: Right, well if we can find out who's behind the bomb, maybe we can take him down first.
Brennan: Lexa, I've been through this three times already.
Lexa: Yeah, and you screwed it up every time.
Brennan: No, you screwed it up!
Lexa: Excuse me?
Brennan: Look, you can do what I say, or you're gonna stay here.
Lexa: It doesn't work that way.
Shalimar: C'mon, Brennan. We go in as a team.
Brennan: Yeah, then why don't you tell her that?
Shalimar: You're the only one here with any memory of what's happened to us; we have to trust you.
Brennan: So you're saying that you can't trust me now?
Shalimar: I'm saying you have feelings for Samantha, and I'm afraid it might color the way you call the shots if we do this thing.
Brennan: No, no, no. I am absolutely clear on what it is that I'm doing here. As for Samantha, yeah, I do feel for her, but that's because she's died 20 times already trying to save these people's lives.
Shalimar: That's it? Pity?
Brennan: What I feel for Samantha isn't going to cloud my judgement.
Shalimar: Fine.
Brennan: Shal, this isn't about Samantha.
Shalimar: Isn't it?
Brennan: I'm not blind. I mean, are you jealous?
Shalimar: No, why would I be jealous of her? That's ridiculous.
Brennan: Well, you shouldn't be threatened by Samantha because what I feel for her has nothing to do with you and me.
Shalimar: I didn't realize there was a you and me.
Brennan: Shal--
Shalimar: Just try not to get us killed. [stalks off]
Brennan: I didn't deserve that.
Samantha: You're lucky. Your mutation has made you stronger. I don't know, with me, it's always seemed like more of a curse.
Brennan: Yeah? Why?
Samantha: Maybe it's the way I learned to use it. Bosch found me young, before I really knew what I could do. He developed my gift--I learned through his horrible experiments. I wanted to go back and make things better. Make them perfect. But they only seemed to get worse. I guess this is my way of making up for what I did then.
Jesse: Another one off your list, huh?
Lexa: Getting shorter all the time.
Jesse: What happens when you're out of bodies?
Lexa: Make a new list.
Jesse: There's more to life than revenge, Lexa.
Lexa: Maybe for you.
Jesse: Wouldn't want to piss you off.
Brennan: I just keep thinking that maybe there was something else that I could've done. If I'd thought about it soon enough, that maybe she'd still be alive.
Shalimar: You know, I think sometimes things are just meant to be.
Brennan: What, she was meant to die?
Shalimar: Maybe she was meant to save you.
Trivia & Nitpicks: Lexa has worked in South America, though she doesn't say with which organization. This is the episode where we learn about her revenge "list."
Brennan has a little black book, where the women each get a certain number of stars.
Shalimar: How many girls you got in this thing?
Brennan: Not enough. [Ugh. Every time you think Brennan has sunk to the lowest level, he finds a basement]
Time rewinds a total of seven times in this episode. It's interesting to note that though Samantha is only capable of going back short intervals at a time, she can piggy-back the jumps, so that it is possible for her to attain longer stretches through successive leaps. Therefore, all Samantha really had to do was take Brennan back to a couple of days before the day the bomb exploded so that they had more time explain matters to the team and come up with a plan, or weeks before the bomb had even been made/entered the building. But that would be too easy, now, wouldn't it?
Samantha says that she's only able to bring Brennan's consciousness and memories back with her, but since she's actually never tried to bring back any of the other team members, she doesn't know that for sure.
The first time Lexa comes down the stairs, she picks Brennan's black book out of Shalimar's hand and gives it to Brennan. But when time rewinds, it's Shalimar who gives Brennan his book.
Jesse may be in charge of stocking the safehouses, but he's certainly not the one in charge of stocking Sanctuary. And he has the bad-milk breath to prove it!
From Shalimar and Lexa's remarks in this episode, it seems as though The Double Helix needs time to warm up before it can be flown anywhere. Yet, in "No Exit," Shalimar and Lexa are able to run into into it and fly away immediately.
When Brennan first walks into Loire Industries, there are six people milling about in the lobby. They all conveniently vanish just in time for him to shock the guard at the front desk unseen.
When Samantha calls The Dominion for help, why doesn't she tell them that she's being held at Loire Industries, so that they can send someone to help her escape the first time instead of wasting time getting out herself?
When Brennan and Samantha try to explain the time travel concept to the team, Shalimar's first reaction is, "That's not possible." Of course it is, silly. You've travelled through time before yourself, in "Time Squared." Sheesh.
Honestly, of all the members of Mutant X, Brennan is the last one who should be distrustful of Lexa for heading off on her own mission. Or has he forgotten his abandoning his teammates in the midst of the deadliest civil war on the planet in "No Man Left Behind"?
Also, while Lexa and Shalimar are digging up dirt on Samantha's background with Bosch and Broder Biochem, why isn't anyone curious about what Samantha's connection with The Dominion is?
The props in this episode suck. The ferocious elemental mutant in the elevator manages to kill Brennan and Samantha with deadly cardboard wrapped in tin foil. The bomb that is powerful enough to bring down a building is a pink styrofoam ball. It's almost as bad as the Rafflesia Pricei in "Dark Star Rising."
When Brennan and Samantha bring Shalimar to Broder Biochem, the same female technician walks up to the window as did when they brought Jesse the time before--but this second time is supposed to be much earlier in the day.
As Bosch's car drives down the alley where Shalimar and Lexa are arguing, "Happy Birthday, N.Y." can be seen written on the wall in the background.
Jesse phases his hand through the wires so that when he masses, they are all cut in half. Yet in "Past as Prologue," people left in the wall after Jesse unphases are just stuck there. Perhaps he would have had to actually mass the wall for them to be cut in half as well.
At the end of the episode, Jesse talks to Lexa about her revenge list again. But since they had that conversation on the third repetition, and didn't tell the details to the other team members, he should have no memory of her telling him about it. Also, it's ironic that he's lecturing her about being caught up in revenge when it wasn't so long ago ("Power Play") that he was willing to risk his own safety to get revenge on Colonel Aaron Gaumont.
