MBGLA.com 4/20/01: Michael Easton SOAP DISH: A striking trend in daytime casts
By CAROLYN HINSEY
The looming actors' strike has created an interesting phenomenon for soap opera casting directors: big names wanting in. "There have been a fair amount," says Mark Teschner, casting director for "General Hospital" and "Port Charles." He won't name any names, other than Michael Easton, who was just cast on "PC." "If he hadn't been interested in the role, it would have been moot," adds Teschner. "But the pending strike probably did help, in terms of making the decision to do daytime when he has resisted it all these years. He's had a good degree of prime-time success [most recently playing Glenn on both 'Ally McBeal' and 'The Practice'] As far as I'm concerned, it's a great example of the right role at the right time with the right actor." \\ Easton, who began his career playing Tanner on "Days of Our Lives," will play a mysterious character named Michael on "PC" through August.

The Free Lance-Star TV Guide 6/30/01: Michael Easton, on Synchronicity "Vamping It Up" Port Charles Hatches A Plot That Really Sucks
TV Guide By Michael Logan June 30, 2001
Some 34 years after Barnabas Collins made TV history as the first soap vampire, ABC's Port Charles is about to reveal that Caleb--the tattooed creep played by --is also a card-carrying member of the blood club. This is just the latest in a string of weird PC plot twists aimed at addicting young viewers: On June 4, Jack (Brian Presley), one of the show's most popular young characters, died mysteriously, and his body was buried by the other PC kids (shades of "I Know What You Did Last Summer"). A few days later we learned that Caleb has a thing for Jack's girlfriend, Livvie (Kelly Monaco). In the June 29-July 2 cliff-hanger, viewers will find out Caleb is a vampire and that Jack--who was bitten by Caleb and has come back to life--is in some sort of vampire limbo. And that, says PC executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers, will kick off the show's next big romantic triangle. "Jack must kill someone in order to survive and have eternal life as a vampire, says Carruthers. "This sets up the struggle for the summer: Will he succumb to this and cross over [to the vampire world]? Or will he fight it off in order to preserve his love with Livvie and protect her from Caleb?" PC recently switched from the standard soap form to surreal, fast-paced, 13-week story arcs that have resulted in a nifty Nielsen bump. The lavishly produced bloodsucker plot--titled "Tainted Love"--has "led to a rebirth in the studio," says Carruthers. "I've never seen the cast and crew so excited."
Easton, who starred in the series Total Recall 2070 and had a notorious recurring role on Ally McBeal (as the well-endowed model in Ally's art class), is also playing PC priest Father Michael, who is Caleb's twin. In preparing for the gig, the actor reread his collection of Anne Rice novels. "If you're going to borrow and thieve, at least take it from someone who's great at what they do," Easton says. "Rice has been very influential on the PC story line--in spirit if not literally."
But Easton also got a little first-hand experience when he accidentally walked into Coven 13, a Gothic dance party sporadically held at a music hall near his home in Los Angeles. "It's a vampire club," he says. "People come with their teeth filed. They bring their blood work. This vampire stuff is very real to them. You think something like that might draw a few people. The night I stumbled in, there was a crowd of 4,000!" Adds the actor with a laugh: "Just when you think you know your city, you don't."
By the way, Easton's tattoos are real. "We did have to alter a few of the personal aspects--dates, names, things like that," he says. "But I finally got a job where I don't have to hide them."

TV Guide Soap Opera Weekly 7/31/01: Michael Easton, on Synchronicity Hit...Michael Easton's Devilish Charm on PC
JOANNE GALLO
The idea of a sexy vampire is hardly new, but watching Michael Easton as Caleb on Port Charles is a revelation. Easton has been so mesmerizing that his performance ranks right up there with the most charismatic creatures of the night. PC was smart to put one of Ally McBeal's former boy toys to work, if only for 12 weeks. If not for such a strong portrayal, the "Tainted Love" storyline could have seemed downright silly. But from the moment he first appeared on-screen as Caleb, rising up from the darkness in the monastery cellar, Easton's hypnotic stare and raw animal magnetism have drawn us into his underworld. (It's no wonder Gaby turned away from her boyfriend,Joe, after one encounter with this charmer.) Easton's performance is powerful but understated. In a milieu in which it would be all too easy to go over the top, Caleb remains cool and convincing. As if that weren't enough, Easton is doing double-duty as Caleb's twin brother, Father Michael. In sharp contrast to his evil sibling, Michael is so mild-mannered, soft-spoken and asexual you almost forget they're played by the same actor. Michael's gentle soul shines through in his portrayer's eyes with the same intensity as Caleb's blood-lust. For Easton, one look is worth a thousand words.

Soaps in Depth 8/7/01: Michael Easton, on Synchronicity 5 Reasons to Welcome a Vampire: Could the living dead liven up life in Port Charles?
Sure, some people hear the word "vampire" and immediately reach for their wooden stakes. Bt before the good folks of Port Charles dial up Buffy and her vamp slaying pals, maybe they should consider keeping Caleb around. Need convincing? Here are just a few reasons to reconsider hammering a final nail into his coffin.
1. There's always someone to work the night shift. The staff of General Hospital would no doubt be grateful to their daylight-shunning pals, who would gladly work the graveyard shift.
2. They know how to make good use of space. Who knew caves were the perfect setting for seduction? A few candles and some throw pillows turned Caleb's bachelor pad from dark and dank to super sexy!
3. They know how to stick by a gal. Sure, Jack claimes to love Livvie, but Caleb has been in love with the beautiful Ms. Locke for over 100 years! (Which just proves that beauty never goes out of style.)
4. They don't call 'em vamps for nothing! Under Caleb's influence, Gaby has shocked her brother by flashing the Nurses Ball audience, dumping Joe and giving in to her darkest desires.
5. Vamps put the "Lust" in Blood Lust. After his run-in with Caleb in the woods, Jack made wild love to Livvie, then planted a passionate kiss on her best friend, Alison.

TV Guide.Com 8/18/01: Michael Easton, on Synchronicity "Interview With A Vampire" Michael Easton Sinks His Teeth Into A Juicy New Role On Port Charles
AND TELLS TV GUIDE MAGAZINE ABOUT THE PERKS OF BEING ALLY MCBEAL'S WELL-ENDOWED BOY-TOY
TV Guide By Michael Logan August 18, 2001
Small-screen vampire Michael Easton has breathed new life into the corpse-like ABC daytime drama Port Charles, and brought it unprecedented raves and buzz. In the August 18th issue (on newsstands Monday, August 13) Easton explains to TV Guide how "The days are gone when soaps can get away with that 'Ooh, you're from a rich family and I'm poor so we can't date'-type of crap." He says, "Today you really have to stir things up."
....
Interview With a Vampire
Once homeless, Michael Easton reinvented himself with an acting career and now sinks his teeth into a juicy new role on ABC's Port Charles. On the set of the ABC daytime drama Port Charles ,a dark, handsome lothario named Caleb is seducing the luscious Livvie, one of the show's most beloved heroines, his face is buried deep into her neck. "Yes, Caleb, yes!" Livvie sighs orgasmically, her breasts heaving, her eyelids fluttering. "I never dreamed it would feel this way." Just another cliche'-ridden soap opera love scene? Not quite: Caleb, played by Michael Easton, is a vampire, and Livvie, played by Kelly Monaco, is about to become his eternal bride. "The days are gone when soaps can get away with that "Ooh, you're from a rich family and I'm poor so we can't date-type crap," says the 34-year-old Easton, recalling the kinds of plots that drove Days of our Lives when he starred on that soap in the early 90's. "Today you really have to stir things up." That he has. His bloodsucker storyline -- initially set to run just this summer but now extended into fall -- has restored life to the corpselike Port Charles, bringing the soap rave reviews and a buzz it had never before enjoyed. Better yet, young viewership has tripled. Much of the credit, says PC executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers, must go to Easton, who also plays Caleb's good twin, the meek, bespecticled town priest, Father Michael.
"He has brought such a level of believability and commitment to his roles that he has raised the bar for everyone," says Carruthers. "And I don't just mean other actors, but the boom operators, the camera crew, the make up people, everybody. "But what's in this daytime gig for Easton, who has starred in several prime-time shows of his own?" People think I'm doing this because I need the money," he says, "but I go where the work is interesting. I've never had a bias about mediums."
Nor, outside of his suds work, has he ever had a hit. None of Easton's four nighttime series -- Total Recall 2070 (1998), 413 Hope St. (1997), Two (1996) and VR.5 (1995) -- lasted past one season. "But I take solace in the fact that I keep getting hired, "he says. "There are actors far more talented than me who can't even get an agent."

TV Guide Soap Opera Weekly 10/9/01: Michael Easton, on Synchronicity PC:CALEB IS BACK!
-- Joanne Gallo --
Vampire Caleb returns with a vengeance this week on Port Charles. The seductive bloodsucker appears to Livvie in a transparent form and promises they will be together once he returns completely. His plan:to destroy all the loving couples in Port Charles. "After the first two weeks of watching Michael Easton (Caleb) and seeing our material come to life, we all knew that if we could hold on to this, that's what we wanted to do," reveals head writer Barbara Esensten. Originally, she and co-head writer James Harmon Brown had planned to end the vampire storyline with the "Tainted Love" arc, but it has now spilled over into "Tempted."
"'Tainted Love' was a really wonderful story," praises Esensten. "And Michael just soared and took it to a whole different level."
Apparently, Easton enjoyed the experience as well. "We got this huge basket of imported French champagne with a card from him on his last day of taping for the first arc, saying ,'Thank you for the wonderful words. It's been a pleasure,'" relates Esensten. Soon after, PC execs told Easton they would do whatever they could to accommodate him if he stayed on, and gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. That's good news for PC fans, but bad news for the residents of Port Charles!

Soap Central 11/30/01: Michael Easton PC Taking Bite Out of Vampire Storylines
by Dan J Kroll Posted Friday, November 30, 2001 5:57:47 PM
With the decision to take the bite out of its vampire storylines, Port Charles will be forced to jettison some of its talent. According to an ABC spokesperson, Michael Easton (Caleb Morley and ex Michael Morley) will no longer be a Port Charles fixture. Easton's last appearance was December 3rd. However, the decision to write out Easton's character may cause some of the actor's fans some sleepless nights. In a recent Soap Opera Central poll, 30% of poll respondents indicated that they would like to see Easton remain with the show. However, those replies indicated that they did not want to see Easton play a vampire. 16% of those responding to the poll wanted to see Caleb live on in the show's storylines with an additional 7% wanting to see Caleb return sometime in the near future. On the flip side, 43% of voters wanted to see PC ditch its vampire storylines all together.

Port Charles' ninth book - "Naked Eyes" - begins on October 1st. This time around, the focus of "Naked Eyes" won't be on a vampire or a group of angels or even a creature that inhabits other people's bodies. No, this time the menace will come in the form of every mother's worst nightmare: a musical group. The group, called The Stephen Clay Experience, arrives in Port Charles hot on the heels of their latest hit, "Crooked Avenue." The band remains a bit of a mystery and it is said that no one has ever seen the lead singer of the group in person - but when the residents of Port Charles see him there are bound to be some surprises. Playing the part of Stephen Clay, the group's leader, is Michael Easton (ex Caleb and Michael Morley).

ABC Soaps In Depth Oct 29, 2002: Michael Easton, on ME Corner PC Cast Reacts to the Latest Additions!
Sources say PORT CHARLES' amped-up cast could deliver the best storyline arc since Tainted Love. Here's why! The In Depth Story: PC boss Julie Hanan Carruthers still is beside herself about Ian Buchanan (Joshua), Michael Easton (ex-Caleb) and Rebecca Staab (Elizabeth) all joining the cast. "We've shot almost the whole [Naked Eyes] book, and we are just absolutely ecstatic!" she raves. "Eerybody came back [from the show's summer hiatus] raring to go, and then to have an awesome storyline on top of it and to play in more actors to heighten it... It's just been great fun."
Return of A Familiar Evil?
Brian Gaskill feels that Easton's return -- details of which are being kept under tight wraps by everyone involved -- holds promise for a good-versus-evil showdown on par with the one Rafe braved during the vampire king's 2001 visit. "Rafe is now sort of going back into a slayer mode after a year of being away from that," he says.
Shannon Sturges (Kate) thrilled to reunite with Easton, with whom she once formed the DAYS OF OUR LIVES couple of Molly and Tanner, says, "We were taping PC's Thanksgiving show, looking at each other thinking, 'Remember when we did the Thanksgiving show with [DAYS icon] Macdonald Carey (Tom)?' It was wild to be together again."
Marie Wilson (Karen) foresees a ratings boost from Easton's encore. "He did such great work for us last time," she recalls. "He made a huge difference."
So which came first: getting back Easton or the Naked Eyes premise? "Definitely the premise," says Carruthers. "But it screamed out for him."

Michael Easton Fan Tribute ON SOAPS: Blood Pressure Will ABC's Vampire Clean Up His Act?
by Michael Logan
Port Charles may be ABC's lowest-rated soap, but for our money, it's the network's best -- as long as the bloodsuckers stay in town. The show's executive producer, Julie Hanan Carruthers, assures us that Caleb -- the steamy vampire masquerading as a rock star -- will remain with PC at least through August. But Hanan Carruthers also hints that the undead dude, played by Michael Easton, will be getting in touch with his sensitive side in a story twist starting February 21 -- a prospect way scarier than Caleb himself. We went to Easton for the scoop.
Caleb will see the light? Say it ain't so!
The people of the town will unite, figure out who he really is and take him down. They finish him off, and there's a cool vampire funeral. Then Caleb gets a second chance at life. He'll do a lot of soul-searching and start to think that maybe this is not what he wants, that maybe darkness is not at his core.
ABC Daytime has a long, funky history of laundering its baddies when they become heartthrobs -- General Hospital's Luke, One Life to Live's Todd...the list goes on.
Look, the PC writers can shift in and out of whatever they like. It's fine to see a little character grownt, a little discovery. But the day Caleb becomes the local police chief, I'm outta there. They may pick someone else to play the part, but I ain't going down that road.
Might it come to that?
No, I don't think they can ever overlook the guy's body count. Not even Clinton, on his last day in office, could get away with pardoning Caleb.

Though the show garnered an Outstanding Drama Series nomination at this year's Emmys, it was seen as a major disappointment when Port Charles lost the award to As The World Turns; Port Charles had been selected as a shoo-in by media outlets - including Soap Opera Central - across the country. The show also failed to capitalize on any of its six other Emmy nominations.

Michael Easton Fan Tribute Soaps In Depth 9/30/03: Easton Bids Caleb Farewell!
In an exclusive interview with Soaps in Depth, Michael Easton shares his thoughts on why PC's Caleb was such a hit with him, and not just fans. The In Depth Story: Not one to give interviews, Easton says his famously press-shy nature actually helped him bite into (sorry, we only have a few weeks of vampire puns left!) his PC role. "There was an energy to Caleb that I really enjoyed because I myself am quite quiet," the actor shares. "Caleb enjoyed being the center of attention, he enjoyed being the focal point, and he had an incredible confidence.
"That was the one thing I reminded myself of every day when I walked onto the set: I had to be confident," he adds. "Even when you stroll into a room, it affects the way you walk, the way you talk, and the way you look at people."
But even after two years as the too-sexy vampire, Easton maintains there still was territory left to explore. "The strange thing about it," he says, "is that I think there was a whole part to Caleb that I wasn't aware of. And I discovered a part of myself -- which sometimes happens with a character -- that I didn't know I had."

Michael Easton Fan Tribute On The Record: Irene Vitale with reporting by Matt Webb Mitovich
In this exclusive Soaps In Depth interview, Michael Easton (John) talks for the first time about the press, PORT CHARLES, and his new Big Apple address. He fascinated PORT CHARLES viewers as vampire Caleb, but despite his popularity, Michael Easton had a reputation for being a press-shy actor. Looking back on his days at PC, he admits that his good intentions may have been misunderstood. First of all, he explains, "Caleb was one of those characters where there was a bit of mystery. I'd also been conscientious about fitting in, and daytime is a very difficult medium in the sense that people are constantly battling for storyline, and there is, by nature, a level of competitiveness to the actors, even subconsciously. I think I made a very conscious effort on that show just to fit in. It wasn't important to me to compete. If it's important to [someone else], I understand. I just wanted to do good work and go home.
"But," he continues, "it almost went too far the other way. I didn't want to overdo press, but then I started to get a lot of, 'Wow, we were surprised you're actually nice' [when people met me]. I didn't want to create that [impression], either."
The End Of An Era
Speaking in depth for the first time about PC's cancellation, Easton reveals, "It broke my heart." Recalling the first time that the reality sank in, he continues, "I had never done the Emmy-week thing, and we did [in 2003] out of great respect for [PC executive producer] Julie Hanan Carruthers, who asked us to go out and support the show. It was one of the first times that I realized that this was a show that definitely was [in jeopardy]. [Many of us] felt that we had to win [Outstanding Drama Series] that night to keep the show going, that was our innate feeling." (AS THE WORLD TURNS took home the trophy.)
"It wasn't so much for us," he goes on. "There were 15, 20 actors on the show. But there were 100 people who lost their jobs...carpenters, technicians...and there are no new jobs coming [in daytime]. They're not bringing on another show. It's just done. A lot of these people who lost jobs had them for years. It's a sad thing."
Still, the actor explains that no one knew that their last day on the set was to be their last day ever. "It would've been nice to have known," he relates, "to say goodbye. I didn't get to see Kelly Monaco (Livvie; Sam, GENERAL HOSPITAL) until Super Soap Weekend six months later!
At the end of the day, Easton loved the experience. "There was a neat energy over there," he says. Because of the unique storyline arcs, "everybody was pushing it and working a little harder and got a little more creative. Julie did so much so fast -- under so much pressure. It was the nicest [group of] people I've ever worked with."

By Nelson Branco 2008-08-13
TVG: So your experience as Caleb on Port Charles must have been a positive one if it prompted you to stay in daytime. Let’s face it; you could have easily pursued prime time after Port Chuck was cancelled.
ME: I had so much fun playing Caleb. ABC was really good to me, and I wanted to move back to New York, so it all worked out perfectly. When I lived in L.A., I found that I was moving further up in the Hollywood Hills, and becoming disconnected from people. When it hit me I was becoming disengaged, I knew New York would get me back on the streets and interact with people. Before PC, I had been out of soaps for 10 years, so it was a great role to re-enter daytime with and the experience made me want to stay in soaps.
....
TVG: Who are you more like as a character, Tanner, Caleb or John?
ME: I’ll tell ‘ya, Tanner was so long ago I don’t even remember [working on Days]! I was only supposed to play Caleb for 10 weeks, but something strange and beautiful happened with the role. Caleb certainly resonated with me because it was a real departure for me as an actor. But I’m more like John. I’m quiet, reserved and a little damaged.
