Snaps wraps
May 26, 2003 by Distin Dinoff

Another big shoot to wrap recently in the Prairies is the prequel to Ginger Snaps, which shot for 30 days in Alberta, finishing May 9. The film is now being posted at Joe Media Group in Calgary. What may separate this Ginger Snaps from its two predecessors and mark it as a growing franchise are the names on the cast list. In addition to the return of Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle, the prequel features Canadian all-stars Hugh Dillon (Hard Core Logo), Nathaniel Arcand (Skins) and JR Bourne (Thir13en Ghosts) as well as Genie winners David La Haye (Un crabe dans la tete), Tom McCamus (Century Hotel) and Brendan Fletcher (Turning Paige).

Ginger Snaps: The Prequel is directed by Grant Harvey and is an Alberta/Ontario coproduction between Toronto’s 49th Parallel and Calgary’s Combustion Inc. The $6-million film, written by Stephen Massicotte and Christina Ray, takes place in 1815 as a trading company outpost is busily fending off four-legged, moon-howling predators. Distribution of the Ginger Snaps films is being handled by Seville Pictures in Canada, with Lions Gate Films handling international. The prequel is scheduled for delivery this fall, with no firm release date set.

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004)

Tom McCamus was marvellous playing a kind hearted and tough as nails character as the father of his child who was turning into a werewolf. I liked his character the best in the film.
....
Also, supporting actor Tom McCamus looked perfectly tough when he stabs Hugh Dillon's character as both of their reactions to this was a classic timing.

So it is in this context that I was viewing “Ginger Snaps Back” the third in the immensely popular and clever Canadian werewolf series.
....
The film also benefits from a very strong supporting cast which includes many respected Canadian indie stars including Tom McCamus (“I Love A Man in Uniform”), David La Haye (“Un Crabe Dans La Tete”) and of course rock ‘n’ roller Hugh Dillon (“Hard Core Logo”).

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning
By Bloody Disgusting Staff on October 22, 2004

Tom McCamus, who f*cked me up with his performance in “I love a man in uniform”, delivers here a very subtle and layered performance. There is a little bit of humanity left in his character but not enough to make a significant impact.

GINGER SNAPS BACK: THE BEGINNING (2004)
Walter Chaw

starring Katharine Isabelle, Emily Perkins, JR Bourne, Tom McCamus
screenplay by Christina Ray and Stephen Massicotte directed by Grant Harvey
....
Enter Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and her moony little sister Brigitte (Emily Perkins), transported back in time with no continuity issues in regards to the previous films and none the worse for the transplant. Ginger Snaps Back opens with the two of them wandering together in the wilderness and coming across a wise old Native American woman equipped with a dire portent before Brigitte gets herself caught in a wolf-trap, snap snap. Not subtle to start with, the film gets thicker once dour, enigmatic Hunter (Nathaniel Arcand) takes our oestrous-pair into the log arms of frontier haven Fort Bailey, where the trio encounters the usual suspects and, eventually, a dog-boy--in addition to the kind of werewolf special effects that can't withstand an intense gaze.

Wallace Rowlands (Tom McCamus), who assumed leadership responsibility of the outpost, also had to deal with death, as both his wife and child were bitten. Unbeknownst to the rest of the survivors, Wallace keeps his child locked within one of the rooms, growing more and more werey as the days pass.

DVD Review- GINGER SNAPS BACK: THE BEGINNING

The prequel has excellent production and costume design, an effective music score, and great actors including Tom McCamus that some genre fans may best know for his performance as Mason Eckhart on the cancelled TV show MUTANT X. McCamus is a true chameleon as he looks nothing like he did in MUTANT X.
