Pointing out that both Chekhov and Ionesco learned from Feydeau, the actor credits Hungarian director Laszlo Marton -- a regular Soulpepper guest -- with providing necessary structure for Flea, which numbers in its cast such excellent comic performers as Stephen Ouimette, Maria Vacratsis, Tom McCamus and Jim Warren. The coordination of their action is something of a circus act, like having multiple balls spinning in the air as long as possible.

Canoe Jam Theatre 2/28/01: Tom McCamus Flea has a few bugs: A Flea In Her Ear learns harsh facts of farce
By JOHN COULBOURN February 28 2001
The latest to stumble over the harsh facts of farce are the artists of Soulpepper, as they tackle Georges Feydeau's delightful A Flea In Her Ear, under the direction of Lazslo Marton. Co-presented with David and Ed Mirvish, Soulpepper's Flea opened last night on the stage of the Elgin Theatre.
....
Matamoros, Demers, Repo-Martell, Stephen Ouimette, Tom McCamus, Cliff Saunders, Jim Warren, Maria Vacratsis, Michael Hanrahan and the rest establish quickly that they can master Marton's demands. But ultimately, in the final act, when Tony Nardi demonstrates how true farce really works, one can't help but wish everyone had listened more to Feydeau's demands and less to Marton's.

The Globe and Mail 3/1/01: Tom McCamus Farce has all the right stuff
Kate Taylor Published Thursday, Mar. 01 2001, 12:00 AM EST
A good farce is a fine machine, perfectly designed by the playwright, carefully constructed by the director and smoothly operated by the cast. Georges Feydeau's A Flea in Her Ear, co-produced by Mirvish Productions and Soulpepper at the Elgin Theatre, is just such an achievement in comic engineering.
....
It turns out that Victor Emmanuel Chandebise is just about the only man in this bourgeois circle who is not philandering. He can't believe the letter could be for him and, convinced it was intended for his rakish friend Tournel (Tom McCamus), unwittingly sends a man who is already smitten with Raymonde straight into her arms at the Hotel Coq d'Or.

Standouts are Matamoros in the dual role of the suspected husband and a brothel porter with a drinking problem, Tom McCamus as a snakelike seducer with matinee-idol charm, and Stephen Ouimette as a seeming virgin who gets lots of politically incorrect laughter out of a speech impediment.

Tom McCamus does very well at capturing the vanity of Monsieur Tournel, who needs so little persuading to believe an anonymous love letter is meant for him.
