Movie Reviews 'A BROKEN SOLE': Cobbling Together a Life Amid Tragedy
By MATT ZOLLER SEITZ Published: November 2, 2007

In December 2001 an actress (Margaret Colin) and a philosophical dyslexic (John Shea) come to terms with their one-night stand while pondering picnic baskets, foreign films and palindromes. A BROKEN SOLE Opens today in Manhattan. Directed by Antony Marsellis; written by Susan Charlotte, based on her play; directors of photography, Dan Karlok and Ken H. Keller; edited by Robert Reitano, William Kelly and David Ray; produced by Ms. Charlotte and Stan Cohen; released by Shoemaker/Broken Sole Productions. A September 11 Parable, Five Years Too Late
By STEVE DOLLAR | November 2, 2007

A final pas de deux spins toward romantic comedy. An actress (Margaret Colin) discovers after a one-night stand that the theater director (John Shea) she met online only picked her because her name, Nan, is a palindrome. He's a dyslexic who is weary of pronouncing his girlfriends' names backward. It's a cute notion that unfortunately only gets cuter. Any potential pathos is jettisoned when Ms. Colin reveals her character's real name is Lana.

Pic, which opened Nov. 2 at New York City’s Quad, will likely close precipitously.

Lastly, actress/anthropologist/travel agent Margaret Colin and dyslexic director John Shea repel and attract each other over palindromes and Pontecorvo.

SOMETHING LIKE THAT To Be Screened At The Helen Mills Theatre 9/16

"SOMETHING LIKE THAT", the 9/11 film to be shown on September 16th-6:30pm at The Helen Mills Theatre.
Directed by Antony Marsellis. Written by Susan Charlotte
Starring Danny Aiello, Judith Light, Bob Dishy, Laila Robins, John Shea and Margaret Colin
Produced by: Stan Cohen

It is hard to find the words that describe the enormity of an event such as 9/11. The feature film entitled "SOMETHING LIKE THAT," alludes to this in its title- The inability to describe the indescribable. Written by Susan Charlotte, directed by Antony Marsellis, starring Oscar Nominee Danny Aiello, Tony Nominee Judith Light, Bob Dishy, Laila Robins, John Shea and Margaret Colin and produced by Stan Cohen, "SOMETHING LIKE THAT," weaves together three stories about 9/11 and its aftermath. The film will be shown at the Helen Mills Theatre, located at 139 West 26th Street on Friday, September 16th at 6:30. There will be a Q & A following the screening and then a reception.
....
"SOMETHING LIKE THAT" consists of three stories that are woven together in an unusual way. "The Shoemaker"-takes place in a shoe shop on September 11, 2001; "The Cabbie" takes place in a cab one month later; and "The Dyslexic Lover" takes place in a downtown loft two months later. We are introduced to each of the three female characters in the same way-the shoes that they are wearing. And though these characters never meet, they wear the same unique green shoes. The men are connected in a different way--they have an unusual relationship to language. The Shoemaker repeats the phrase, "Something like that," every time he does not want to answer a painful question. The Cabbie is enthralled with the syllables that make up each word that he speaks. And the Dyslexic Lover sees most words in reverse. All six characters have been traumatized by 9/11 and are trying to find their way in emotional territory that feels unsafe and unfamiliar.
