Ausiello: Victor Webster is joining the cast beginning with Episode 16. His character's name is Cupid and he'll play an "integral role in Phoebe's quest for true love."

Victor Webster loves being `Cupid' on 'Charmed'

Victor Webster ("Mutant X") may be playing the god of love on The WB's "Charmed," currently in its final season (as is The WB), but his trailer door on the Paramount lot says "Coop." "I'm not the Cupid," he says, on his second day of work on the show. "I'm one of the Cupids. It's a clan of Cupids, I guess. I'll be honest with you. I have no idea what's going on with my character. I haven't been let in on any information. I'm looking forward to it all unfolding and seeing what happens."
Since he goes by "Coop," one can then assume this Cupid doesn't go the diaper-and-wings route? "Big safety pins down the side," quips Webster. "No, they have me dressed very dapper - suits, button-down shirts, sports coats."
Cupid makes his first appearance in the Sunday's episode, called "Engaged and Confused," which also looks to feature a wedding scene for youngest good-witch Halliwell sister Paige (Rose McGowan). Unattached middle sister Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) - whose past loves have included Julian McMahon ("Nip/Tuck," "Fantastic Four"), Eric Dane (a k a Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan on "Grey's Anatomy"), Nick Lachey ("Newlyweds") and Jason Lewis (the upcoming "The Life and Death of Bobby Z") - worries about a strange man following her then discovers that it's actually Cupid. "So far," Webster says, "I have made my introduction. I told her that I would help her find true love, so that she could have the child she was promised. So maybe she'll be having a baby. Maybe she won't. I have no idea."
Of course, this being "Charmed," it's quite possible that Coop and Phoebe could be the ones winding up hand-in-hand. "If I was to speculate," Webster says, "that could be an interesting story."
Either way, Webster figures that just being around Milano could be lucky. "Alyssa was saying she has the Midas touch. Julian McMahon went to `Nip/Tuck,' good things are happening for Nick Lachey and Jason Lewis ..."
As for Milano, who first gained fame as a child actor on "Who's the Boss?", Webster can't say enough. "She's got the biggest heart. She is very open and friendly to everybody. She treats everybody like family. She's extremely talented. So far, I've had a really good experience. It's just like walking onto a set that you've been working on for a year.
"Alyssa was basically born on her mark. You would think that sometimes that would have a tendency to screw with your head or to cause you to be standoffish or not such a people person, but it's completely the opposite. Not only is she not that, but she's the polar opposite of that.
"She knows the names of everybody's kids, `How you doing?' `How's your dog?' just the history of everybody. She really cares."
In the syndicated "Mutant X," Webster played a genetically altered human who could manipulate electricity. In "Charmed," he's a full-on mythological character, but emphasizes that he can't play it that way. "For me," he says, "it's to play it as real as possible, as a real person. If you get into the mythological character and you start playing it otherworldly, it just comes off weird. I think he would just be a regular guy. He'd be very charming. He'd be very confident. Let's say he wasn't Cupid, let's say he's a master of love, what would he have? That's how I start looking at it.
"I think he'd have a great sense of humor, sense of style. He can probably dance and cook and tell good jokes, be a lot of fun, have a lot of positive energy, want to lift you up. Obviously he would take great care of himself. He would look immaculate the whole time."
It's hard to know whether Webster has all these attributes in real life, but he is into the martial arts and all kinds of sports, and he's handy. Before he broke his foot in a motorcycling accident six months ago - he's well on the road to full recovery now - Webster says, "I was working at my house all the time. Right now I'm building a pergola in front and a deck in the back.
"I used to work in construction. I've done so many jobs. I did most of the work on my house. But when I broke my foot, I brought guys in. I can't carry big beams or climb up ladders now, so there are people working at my house, but I'm pretty much designing everything and supervising."
Webster doesn't, though, think he has a future as a celebrity carpenter. "God forbid," he says. "I'm not that good with a megaphone."

Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) notices a strange man following her, and soon discovers that he is Cupid (guest star Victor Webster, "Must Love Dogs"). Meanwhile, a demon kidnaps Christy (guest star Marnette Patterson, "Nip/Tuck") in order to lure The Charmed Ones into attacking the Triad and prevent them from taking over the Underworld. Kaley Cuoco also stars. Stuart Gillard directed the episode written by Jeannine Renshaw (#62015-08-172).

Cupid's Arrow: Star and all-round hunk Victor Webster talks to us about his pivotal role in the closing episodes of Charmed

When Victor Webster first received a call from the production offices of Charmed asking if he’d be interested in playing the role of Cupid, the actor had to know one thing before accepting the job. “Would I be wearing a diaper? If that was the case, then I was going to ask for at least one million dollars per episode!” jokes Webster.
Fortunately, all the traditional trappings associated with Cupid, including his diaper, wings and quiver full of love-inducing arrows, are nowhere in sight. In fact, the handsome Webster is dressed both conventionally and dapper when he makes his début in the eighth season Charmed episode Engaged and Confused. His character of Cupid, aka Coop, is not the Roman god of Love, but one of several Cupids. Coop has been sent to Earth by the Elders to help the middle Halliwell sister, Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), find her one true love. Bringing such a character to life presented Webster with quite an acting challenge.
“Coop is extremely confident. He knows all about love and relationships, and the problem with a guy who’s so sure of himself is that you can play him very cocky and arrogant, and that can be somewhat off-putting,” explains the actor. “The trick with Coop, because he’s so one-track minded when it comes to finding Phoebe’s love and certain that he’s going to do it, was to find the fun in that and not alienate the audience. I mean, there is no cockiness in love. Falling in love often involves humility because you discover a great deal about yourself. A lot of times what I’ve found in my [real] life is that you learn about your faults and how to overcome them if the relationship you’re in means that much to you.
“So when you present viewers with someone like Coop, who’s supposed to be the perfect guy, you have to find a way to draw both women and men in to watch and enjoy the character. Part of how you do that is to bring humor to your performance. You have to be able to laugh at yourself and, when necessary, be a bit self-deprecating. That works well within the structure of a show like Charmed, which has some wonderful humor infused into the storytelling. Much of that is done by the writers, and it’s then taken a step further by the show’s leading ladies.”
Although Coop’s desire to help Phoebe is truly well-meaning, she is, at least initially, leery of his intentions. “Coop really admires Phoebe for all that she has done,” says Webster. “She’s given up so much and sacrificed who she is as an individual in order to become part of the master plan. Phoebe is an open, caring and beautiful person and someone who deserves love. She’s also destined to have children, but if she can’t figure out what it is that is keeping her from becoming involved in a loving relationship, then it’s not going to happen.
“That’s where my character comes in. He has to convince Phoebe that what she’s doing is right, but she also has to take time for herself.”

PH: So how did you enjoy working on the final season of “Charmed”?
VW: Oh, man, you keep bringing up all of these great shows. I just had such great experience on all of them.
PH: Plus, on “Charmed,” you got to marry Alyssa Milano in the end.
VW: Yeah, shit, who’s gonna be mad about that? (Laughs) I’d had a crush on her every since way back in the day when she was first on TV. And she’s the sweetest girl ever. She’s so cool, and she’s not affected in any way by her success and what she does. She’s truly one of the exceptions to the rule. But that show was great because, y’know, they’d been around for seven years together, and they were a family. It was a well-oiled machine. You’d come into work, and you’d be done faster than on any show I’ve ever worked on. They would just fly through the day. So that always made it a really great experience. And, then, a lot of times when you’re working on a set, people disperse to their trailers and go back into their own little holes and relax. On this set, though, they’d stay on set and just chat and laugh and talk. That was an interesting experience as well, and it made for a real enjoyable time working on it.

[-]VictorWebster[S] Charmed was a great experience. The girls welcomed me with open arms. Alyssa Milano was a true sweetheart. I think my best relationship onset was with her dog, Lucy. Coming onto a show that had been running that long, and had such a loyal following, was slightly intimidating at first, until the first day I walked onset, and realized that everybody acted & treated each other like family. I think the episode where Alyssa and I got married was one of my favorites, because that was the last scene we shot, everybody was there at the wedding, but they were not only characters but also actors at the end of a long-running TV show who had spent a lot of time together. So it was bittersweet.

She knew the names of everybody's children, their wives, what they were doing for the holidays... she used to bring her dog Lucy to set all the time. And if there's one thing you know about me, it's that I absolutely LOVE animals. So I was the designated dog caretaker.

[-]VictorWebster[S] I'll be honest with you, it wasn't very challenging. It was a little bit daunting, because of the popularity of the show. But it was a well-oiled machine. The scripts were great. The other actors were very talented. And the crew could shoot the show in their sleep. So I would say the show was exciting and fun. The only challenge for me was to not play Coop too sappy, since he was a cupid and all about love it would have been easy to fall into that trap.

It was bittersweet, because it was the last day of shooting an 8 season show, where all of us were supposed to act very happy, because there was a wedding going on, yet everybody was very sad because the family was breaking up.
