Stratford actors stage Warkworth Main Street benefit
by NANCY POWERS

The rejuvenation of Main Street in Warkworth will be one step closer to reality when two well known actors, both residents of Warkworth, appear in Love Letters at the Warkworth Town Hall Centre for the Arts on September 22. Proceeds from the performance, which is sponsored by the Warkworth Business Association, go to the Warkworth Main Street Project. The play, written by A.R. Gurney, stars husband and wife team Tom McCamus and Chick Reid, and is a wry and poignant love story told entirely through letters read by the actors. Its simplicity made Love Letters ideal for the couple to perform in Warkworth because it doesn't require an elaborate stage, and there is very little memorization required. According to Reid this is a very popular play among married couples who are both performers. "I think we must be the only couple in Canada who haven't performed Love Letters," said Reid with a laugh. "It will be a nice change to actually act one-on-one with Tom."

The couple moved to Warkworth last November because they fell in love with the area, and Reid wanted to live in a place were she could walk her dogs without a leash. She got her wish when the couple purchased a home that has plenty of acreage. Although they live in Warkworth, the couple have remained active in the Toronto area, and both are continuing to perform at a variety of venues.

Award-winning actor McCamus has appeared in leading roles for eight years at the Shaw Festival and five seasons at the Stratford Festival. He received the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Actor for his performance in Theatre Plus' production of Abundance. His extensive film work has been recognized with a Genie Award for Best Actor in I Love a Man in Uniform, and a Best Actor nomination for Long Day's Journey into Night. A role in Atom Egoyan's feature film The Sweet Hereafter also earned McCamus a Best Supporting Actor Genie nomination. Among his numerous television credits are the lead role in the upcoming television series Mutant X (due out this fall) and appearances on Emily of New Moon, F/X, Due South, Wind at My Back, Tekwars, Street Legal and Side Effects.
