Musketeers duel in Maple Ridge
by: Ian Edwards Oct 25, 2004

Vancouver: The future is brightening for B.C. television series production and it's coming from the past. Producers Kirk Shaw and James Shavick begin production Nov. 8 on Young Blades, described as a next generation of Musketeers set in 17th century Paris. The 22 hours will air on CHUM in Canada and PAX TV in the U.S. Sony owns the foreign rights to the six-out-of-10 show. Shaw says the per-episode budget is in the $1-million range, helped in large amount by the 12.5% regional labor bonus gained by locating the production in a 37,000-square-foot warehouse in Maple Ridge. Karen Cliche (Mutant X) stars as a woman posing as a man among the new group of swordsmen. Other casting was happening at press time. Shaw says the series was originally created as a France/Canada coproduction with Canal+ and Universal, but the original deal fell through. Universal, he adds, referred the series to Shaw and Shavick, who bought the entire project.

Young Blades Series Premiere: A romp into the past mixes swashbuckling with science and fantasy for a new generation of musketeers
By Kathie Huddleston

Young Blades Series Premiere "Wanted"
Starring Karen Cliche, Tobias Mehler, Bruce Boxleitner and Michael Ironside
Created and written by Billy Brown and Dan Angel
Pax Premieres Sunday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. ET/PT

Jacqueline (Cliche) is a beautiful 17th-century French woman who'd rather spar with swords with her brother than attend to feminine duties. However, when her brother is imprisoned and her father is murdered by one of Cardinal Mazarin's (Ironside) evil guards, she kills the guard and barely escapes with her life. Determined to free her brother, Jacqueline heads off to find him and takes the guise of a man. Presenting herself as Jacques, she seeks out three of the most brash musketeers at the Musketeer military academy and attempts to join. D'Artagnan (Mehler), the son of the great D'Artagnan, is happy to test out the new applicant to the academy. However, when Jacques bests him, Musketeer Captain Duval (Boxleitner) quickly signs up the new recruit. D'Artagnan doesn't trust Jacques and shares his suspicions with his fellow young blades, Ramon (Zak Santiago), a Spanish poet who has been disowned by his aristocratic family, and Siroc (Mark Hildreth), an inventor who comes up with ludicrous inventions such as flying machines and submarines. Meanwhile, Cardinal Mazarin approaches the 15-year-old future King Louis (Robbie Sheehan) in hopes of getting rid of the musketeers once and for all after a scuffle with other guards. However, the immature king has no intention of getting rid of his musketeers. Now if only he could get rid of the enormous pimple on his face, he might be happy. The Cardinal lets Louis have his way for the moment. He has more important duties to attend to, such as being the head of a secret order called the Order of the Knights of Black Tabernacle. The villainous order likes to experiment on the prisoners in the dungeons, prisoners such as Jacqueline's brother. Realizing that she may not have much time, Jacques follows guards taking her brother and another prisoner away in a wagon. D'Artagnan and the others follow Jacques to see what the new Musketeer could be up to. What the young warriors all discover is that evil forces are at work and that they may be the only ones who can stop Cardinal Marazin and his minions.
....
While it's silly to think that anyone would believe the beautiful Karen Cliche is a man, that element plays well once the action starts. The musketeers are distinct and fresh characters, played by a bright cast that gets plenty of backup from character actors Ironside and Boxleitner.

DArtagnan (Mehler), the son of the legendary Musketeer of the same name, is a ladies man as well as a fighter. He is challenged to become an even better warrior after he learns that his fellow student, Jacques (Cliche), a phenomenal swordsman, has a deep secret: Jacques is really Jacqueline, a young woman who masquerades as a man in order to escape a price on her head and avenge the death of her father and imprisonment of her brother at the hands of the evil Mazarin (Ironside).

SERIES DEBUT 8-9PM Young Blades (PAX, TV-PG)

Played as a low-budget The Three Musketeers: The Next Generation, Young Blades chronicles a cadre of swordsmen in a country vaguely resembling France. And I use the term swordsmen loosely - mostly because none of these folks could defend themselves against a wild chicken, but also because they're not all dudes. Meet Jacques (née Jacqueline, played by Karen Cliche), a lady Musketeer doing a drag routine the likes of which we haven't seen since Just One of the Guys. But the point here is silly fun - hey! Michael Ironside! And if you don't laugh out loud when a smitten young lass purrs, ''Jacques, there's something different about you!'' you just don't know how to party.

"Young Blades" shows its mettle
By Kate O'Hare Zap2it.com ED ARAQUEL / PAX TV

It's not a vampire show, but Pax's "Young Blades" has certainly demonstrated a talent for rising from the dead. First announced at the struggling network's upfront presentation in spring 2002, the swashbuckling comedy-drama - a version of Alexandre Dumas' classic "The Three Musketeers" re-imagined for younger viewers - seemed to disappear into development limbo, never to be heard from again. Cut to 2-1/2 years later, and "Young Blades" is not only still alive, it premiered last night on Pax. This is the result of determination on the parts of creators Dan Angel and Billy Brown, of American production company The Hatchery, in partnership with executive producers James Shavick and Kirk Shaw, of Canada's Shavick/Insight Studios. "Young Blades" began shooting its 22-episode order (entirely in high-definition) last fall in the Vancouver, B.C., area. "It seems like you've been on a really long journey," Brown says. "Along the way, there have been so many depths, fights with attacking marauders and rivers that you have to cross. You finally get to the end of the Oregon Trail, and you seem like a changed person once you get there."

Set in 17th-century France (some establishing footage was shot in France), the show centers around a sort of Musketeer academy, where swordfighters-in-training learn to defend their homeland and its future ruler, teenage Prince Louis (Robbie Sheehan), who will one day be King Louis XIV. Scottish singer/actress Sheena Easton has also joined the cast as Louis' mother, Queen Anne. On TV "Young Blades," at 8 p.m. Sunday on Pax. Tobias Mehler ("Taken") plays D'Artagnan Jr., son of the legendary Musketeer (to be played by recurring star Charles Shaughnessy); Karen Cliche ("Mutant X") plays Jacqueline, who pretends to be the male Jacques so she can avenge her family; Zak Santiago plays Ramon, who spouts a free-form poetry he calls "rhapsody"; and Mark Hildreth rounds out the quartet as Siroc. "Babylon 5" star Bruce Boxleitner, sporting a goatee, plays their instructor, Capt. Duvall; Michael Ironside plays their nemesis, the evil Cardinal Mazarin, head of a secret society.
....
According to Angel and Brown, the cast underwent a couple of weeks of training prior to production, but the work goes on. "They're continually training," Brown says. "The swordmaster was very impressed how athletic they were."

"In this show," Angel says, "which is very important, we have a real ensemble. They're having fun; they really like each other; they're great actors together. You can't pay for that kind of chemistry. They're spending a lot of their own time working together, continuing to train and practice. They are loving it."

Brown is particularly impressed with Cliche, who showed off her beauty and her tail-kicking skills in "Mutant X." "To me," he says, "there's something about her acting style that hearkens back a bit to the heroines of the '40s, a kind of clarity and cleanness to her acting. It's very crisp.

"I just watched an episode which is not put together yet, where she saves the exiled Charles II of England. In the guise of her woman character, she falls in love with him. He's not aware she's a Musketeer."

The producers are also introducing a monk character, not yet cast, to counterbalance Mazarin, whose allegiance to the Church is only skin deep. "Jacqueline has a sincere faith," Brown says. "It wouldn't be unusual to see her praying. There's a monk that she goes to for historical research. You gotta have a monk. You gotta have a friar occasionally."

``Young Blades'' (Pax; 8 tonight) Think: Remember our good friend, actress Karen Cliche, who, we suggested awhile back, should change her name if only to avoid lame critical quips on her projects? Well, she hasn't; that hasn't prevented her from finding work in this swashbuckler set in 17th-century France, portraying a headstrong young woman on the lam from corrupt leaders who disguises herself as a man and enrolls in the Musketeer Academy, run by Bruce Boxleitner. The Futon's First Look: "Young Blades" (PAX)
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC) [01/23/05 - 12:00 AM]

"Young Blades," from the Emmy-winning pair of Billy Brown and Dan Angel ("Door to Door"), is a goofy, fun and occassionally charming series about a new generation of the famed Musketeers. At the center of the action are three young members of the Musketeers military academy - DArtagnan (Tobias Mehler), the womanizing son of the famed Musketeer of the same name; Ramon (Zak Santiago), a rebellious poet; and Siroc (James Marsters dead-ringer Marc Hildreth), an inventor with an eye for anachronistic contraptions - as well a recent addition, Jacqueline/Jacques (Karen Cliche), a woman who disguises herself as a man to get into the Musketeers in order to avenge her father's death. They're shephered by Captain Duval (a somewhat underused Bruce Boxleitner) who feebly attempts to keep them in line. The pilot picks up as Jacqueline's father is killed and her brother captured by the villainous Cardinal Mazarin (the always great to see on TV Michael Ironside), who we quickly learn plans to usurp the French throne from the young King Louis (Robbie Sheehan) not to mention experiment on lowly villagers with a mysterious device. Jacqueline, who also happens to be a prodigy with the sword, then heads off to Paris to join the "men only" Musketeers.
....
Eventually they cross paths with the newly remonikered Jacques and their quest to take down Cardinal Mazarin begins.

FOR YOUNG VIEWERS; Wielding Swords And Centuries
By KATHRYN SHATTUCK Published: January 30, 2005

The result is ''Young Blades,'' an adventure series shown Sundays at 8 p.m. on PAX that follows a rakish quartet of fledgling swashbucklers as they hone their rapier skills, and wit, at a military academy in 17th-century France while defending the honor of their homeland and its teenage king. D'Artagnan (played by Tobias Mehler) is the son of the legendary musketeer of the same name, whose skills with the sword as well as the women rival his father's. Ramon (Zak Santiago) is a rebellious spoken-word poet disowned by his aristocratic Spanish family. Siroc (Mark Hildreth) is a wild-eyed inventor of submarines and flying machines. And Captain Duval (Bruce Boxleitner) is their sword master and surrogate father, charged with keeping the unwieldy group in line. And then there's Jacqueline (Karen Cliche), known to all but D'Artagnan as Jacques, a comely young woman masquerading as a man to escape the price put on her head by the evil Cardinal Mazarin (Michael Ironside), adviser to France's whiny pubescent King Louis IV (Robbie Sheehan). With the sword, at least, she can outmaneuver them all. ''The show came at a really good time because it allowed me to get away from the 'hot babe' stereotype I was falling into,'' Ms. Cliche said. ''Jacqueline has a very independent spirit, and hard as it is to meet the physical challenges, it's still fun. It's the first role I've had where it's not important what I look like. And the show itself is such a cool concept that I think some great story lines will evolve for Jacqueline's character as she comes into her own as one of the men.''

Toro Magazine 5/05: Karen Cliche

Toro Woman: Karen Cliche
Kevin Chang Toro Magazine May 2005

Lithe yet voluptuous, Karen Cliche makes an unlikely candidate to be a man. But, as Jacqueline on Young Blades, an action TV series inspired by The Three Musketeers, she plays a swashbuckling fugitive who passes herself off as a male Musketeer. If there is such a thing, Cliche, twenty-eight, has a tomboy smoulder. "I feel like a goof inside," she says with an easy, disarming smile. Over a drink in Vancouver's Yaletown, Cliche is ingratiating, effusive, and courteous. In conversation, her eyes narrow, glinting with complicity, before she punctuates a thought with her booming laugh. Born in Sept-Iles, PQ, the child of a Canadian Forces sergeant, Cliche has lived in Manitoba, Virginia, and Germany. She settled in Montreal long enough to study psychology at Concordia before modelling work led her to Europe. Roles in TV series such as Adventure Inc. and Mutant X soon followed. "I play characters who are afraid to be vulnerable. It's the same struggle I have in my own life."

Cliche thinks that the latent army brat in her could be why she values punctuality and perfectionism. But her recurring role as "the new kid" growing up also forced her to become an extrovert. Though she's quickly adapted to Vancouver, where Young Blades is shot, her heart is still in Toronto, where she shares a home with her boyfriend, a sound man she met on the set of Mutant X. "In my history with guys, I've been more the aggressor," she insists. "I usually like the quiet, shy guys."

To prepare for Young Blades, Cliche trained with a sword master to handle rapiers and broad blades. Does this mean she can inflict some damage? "Oh yeah, man," she purrs, before letting out another deep laugh.

Karen Cliche Interview
Interview by Gilles Nuytens for The Scifi World Transcript by Mathieu Pesin (Angel10) - Second read by Rene Burl

Gilles Nuytens: So far which role that you have portrayed was the most challenging and why?
Karen Cliche: Well I have to say probably… About 3 years ago I was on a show called “Young Blades” where I played a girl who had to disguise as a man to get into the Musketeers, it was the best time of my life, but as usual with the best things in your life, they are usually the most challenging. I hardly wore any make-up, I had bigger eyebrows, painted-in big brow eyebrows and my hair pulled back, no make-up; we were shooting in hi-definition which is very unforgiving, and I had to be an expert sword fighter, and we learnt how to ride horses and sword fight at the same time, and I had to keep my voice very low. So there were all these things that every day I couldn’t be lazy about, I really had to commit to walking like a man, talking like a man, sword fighting, all of these things, but I tell you it was the best time of my life, I absolutely loved it but it was the most challenging, it was the toughest for me to pull that off, and not make it too much of a joke even if it was a little bit of a comedy, you want the dramatic moments to be justified with you taking it seriously. So yeah I would say that, I don’t know if you guys see it over there, I don’t think it plays over there, does it? I think it plays in Eastern Europe, like Bulgaria, Romania, I’ve had a lot of fans from over there who know about the show.

Hey Karen! First of all i want to tell that i don't know english perfectly and no wonder if i'll make some mistakes So what about Young blades's sequel? The show had such an interesting finish))I'd like to see more And one more question: Do you have a lot of time for this? I mean internet, forums and so on) Thank you for following answer. With love, Yaryna

Hi!!! Unfortunately there will not be a sequel to Young Blades.....that's it. I absolutely loved doing that show. I am still very close to the boys of Y.B, and we all miss it too! Right now I have more time to answer questions etc., because I am not on a series, cuz when I am, it's 4-5 hrs of sleep a night for 8 months, and many hours on set. But since I am NOT on a series at the moment , (though I am working my little butt off to get back on one, haha!!) I have more time for you guys, so go ahead and keep me busy! xoxoxo

Hi Karen, i really liked Flash Godon and was wondering if you had heard if it is coming back for a second season. I have to say i am somewhat disgusted on all the flak and hatemail the series is getting, its supposed to be a somewhat campy action/sci-fi series and in that vein i think it is very entertaining i think too many hardcore sci fi fans are comparing to big blockbuster unlimited budget block buster movies or other sci fi series that are more hardcore and serious. I like the entire cast but you clearly draw everyones interest standout as the best one on the show. Secondly, i was wondering if you are familiar with Terry Goodkind's epic bestselling Sword of Truth fantasy, they are soon to come out with a minseries for the first book Wizard's First Rule produced by Sam Raimi and i think you would be perfect for Kahlan one of the main stars/characters and the love interest of the Main character who is a strong character who kicks butt but has grown up very isolated and clueless about the world outside her sphere of influence. I also think you would be good playing Wonder Woman if they ever make a big screen version. You possess the unique ability to combine comedy, with a clueless foreign type innocence all while playing a kick butt hottie action hero, I love the action, sci-fi roles you have played so far, however i think taking on a role like i stated above would expose you to a wider audience instead of just the niche that watches sci-fi.............again i meant that last statement as a compliment so dont be offended.

Thanks so much for your post!!! Well, so far we dont know about a second season, but we are definately keeping our toes and fingers crossed for it! Until I know whats happening with that, I cant commit to much!!! That sword project you speak of sounds very cool. After doing "Young Blades" I am wishing for some more swordwork to do, it was so amazing. You all will be the first to know on my end of any news!!! xoxoox happy new year!

Dueling with Dumas
Margaret O'Connell, Staff Writer March 30, 2009

My only familiarity with the works of Dumas comes from watching the 2005 syndicated television series Young Blades on PAX. The basic premise of this series could be described as The Three Musketeers: The Next Generation.
....
However, Jacques, the fourth young musketeer, was the most interesting to me, and, along with D'Artagnan junior, got the most airtime. Jacques was actually Jacqueline (Karen Cliche), a retired musketeer's daughter who was first seen defeating her less feisty brother in a fencing match in front of their family barn. When one of Mazarin's evil military minions showed up at their farm a few minutes later, goaded their father into an argument, then fatally ran him through, Jacqueline snatched a sword and promptly dispatched the murderous officer in revenge. She then leaped on a horse and escaped. Unfortunately, Jacqueline's brother was arrested and thrown in the dungeon in her place. So she disguised herself as a man and applied to join the Royal Musketeers in the hope of getting access to the prison to free her brother. With the help of D'Artagnan junior, who accidentally discovered her true gender shortly after she joined up—nobody else ever figured it out—she managed to do just that by the conclusion of the first episode. Once freed, Jacqueline's brother successfully escaped to America. Despite the fact that she was still wanted for murder, Jacqueline herself elected to remain in France in the guise of Jacques the Musketeer, vowing to work with her new-found comrades to thwart and eventually expose Mazarin's nefarious plans.
