CULVER CITY: Sony Pictures Entertainment's (SPE) action and adventure channel AXN is expanding its reach. AXN launches in six East European countries - Poland, Hungary, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria - on 17 October.
AXN general manager for Central Europe Tom Davidson made the announcement yesterday.
AXN will feature top Hollywood, European and international programming that includes action series and movies, adventure reality and action animation aimed at thrill-seeking, advertiser friendly 18-34 year olds, says a company release. The subscription and ad-supported basic channel, will deliver local language versioned content to viewers across the region, an official release says.
While making the announcement, Davidson stated, "The response to AXN has been phenomenal. To exit the gate with one million total subscribers is a testament to the strength of the AXN proposition and confirmation that our strategy to localise in each market has been embraced by cable operators across the region."
AXN's primetime schedule will feature action with the latest US adventure, sci-fi and animated-action series featuring the regional premiere of Spider-Man: the Animated Series; Street Time, the urban action drama starring Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure ); Odyssey 5, the first-run, outer space adventure series starring Peter Weller (Robocop ); and the global sci-fi hits Mutant X and Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda.

With the new launches, AXN will now reach more than 87 million households in over 46 countries throughout Asia, Europe and Latin America, the release says.

MIPCOM NEWS: AXN, the international adrenalin-driven cabsat channel from Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI), is to launch in Italy.
Set to debut as a 24-hour basic channel on the Sky Italia pay-TV platform on October 29, AXN will feature both acquired and local programming for Sky's 3.3 million-plus Italian subscribers, it was announced today.
AXN's mix of top-rated US series (The Shield), blockbuster Hollywood movies, adventure-reality shows, lifestyle and sports, is beamed to almost 100 million households in more than 50 countries throughout Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East.
For the first time, Italians will be able to watch the sci-fi fantasy Mutant X and hip sports entertainment programme AXN Shakedown, an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the World Rally Championship.
Italy is an important territory gain for AXN as it expands across Europe. It already covers 12 countries including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.

Fireworks International, a division of the UK's ContentFilm, has racked up a number of sales for Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, following Mipcom last week.
Among the deals are: Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) licensing series five for its AXN channels in Japan, Israel and central Europe; Calle 13/Universal picking up the rights to season five for Spain; Tele Muenchen Fernseh for the same in Germany; Euro TV has acquired all five seasons for cabsat broadcast in France; and ERT in Greece has signed a deal for the first 44 episodes. Home video rights to season five, meanwhile, have gone to Contender Entertainment in the UK and Force Video in Oz.
Fireworks has also signed three further deals with SPTI. The AXN channel in central Europe has acquired a third season of Mutant X and Relic Hunter, along with a second series of 18 Wheels of Justice; AXN Germany has signed on for Queen of Swords, in addition to the first 52 one-hour episodes of crime series Cold Squad; and AXN Israel has picked up season three of The Collector.
