Perfect Pie

Set in rural Ontario, Perfect Pie traces the lifelong connection of two women, Francesca and Patsy, who, as children, confronted a terrible event. Although Patsy ultimately chose to stay on her family’s farm, Francesca decided to escape, driven away by small-town torment. Now an internationally acclaimed opera singer, Francesca returns to her home town to sing at a benefit, at the request of Patsy, whom she has not heard from for many years. Their story, told in the present day, interweaves scenes of Patsy and Francesca at ages 10 and 15. When the past meets the present, a catharsis is achieved, which forces the women to re-examine their lives and their deep bond of friendship.

PERFECT PIE

This film was adapted from a play by Canadian writer Judith Thompson, one of the finest talents in contemporary Canadian theatre. Barbara Willis Sweete is one of Canada’s most experienced directors of dance and music films. This time she sets her hand to showing how peoples’ lives are transformed when they must choose between staying close to their roots or leaving to experience the world.

This is the story of two women: one, a beauty who became a farm wife; the other, a socially awkward ugly duckling teenager who becomes an internationally known opera singer, returning home to sing a benefit concert.

The women are forced to examine their adult lives, while at the same time confronting the memory of the terrible event that bound them together forever and that sent Frances seeking a new life far from home. Cast includes Wendy Crewson, Tom McCamus, Rachael McAdams and Alison Pill.
