Despite its low budget, the film, co-written by Bridget Newson ("Franklin", "Runaway Christmas"), features a huge cast of prominent Canadian actors, among them Colm Feore ("32 Shorts Films About Glenn Gould", "The Red Violin", "Titus", Steven Speilberg's upcoming "A.I."), Tom McCamus ("The Sweet Hereafter", "Long Day's Journey Into Night"), Mia Kirshner ("Exotica", "Mad City"), Lindy Booth ("Relic Hunter") and Sandrine Holt ("Black Robe"). Maida and Kreviazuk are the only non-professional actors in "Century Hotel", which was Weaver's intention for the two musician roles.

Take One 9/1/01: Tom McCamus, David Hewlett (Hector Friemark in "Taking of Crows") CENTURY HOTEL
"When you set out to write a script about a hotel room, you're going to be writing about sex, because that's what happens in hotel rooms," explains David Weaver, the director and co--writer of Century Hotel, a high--concept entry in this year's Perspective Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival.
....
The salad days of that decadent decade brought about a certain self-indulgence that included the whims of an out-of-town businessman, Nicholas (Tom McCamus), who engages his first call girl, Dominique (Mia Kirshner). Their chemistry, which goes beyond the thrill of contract fellatio, endures and they agree to meet at yearly intervals. It's a nefarious take on Same Time, Next Year with nary a trace of Alan Alda. "There were stories I looked for that were reflections of myself and there were stories that were more distant from me," says Weaver. "The 1980s segment, even though Tom's character is middle--aged and even though I've never been with a prostitute, was about something that is real to me in my life. I have had that connection with a woman -- a deep sexual connection that throws the rest of your life into disarray -- but I've never seen this story, that kind of connection, portrayed on film in any kind of real way."
....
The success of locking in Feore created casting momentum. Anything seemed within the realm of possibility. Why not Genie--winner McCamus (I Love a Man in Uniform)? Why not David Hewlett (Traders, Cube)?

Variety 11/11/01: Tom McCamus Review: ‘Century Hotel’
November 11, 2001 | 12:21PM PT Ken Eisner
Seven semi-related stories set in a single room, “Century Hotel” escapes omnibus hell thanks to clever design and strong performances, especially from Mia Kirshner and Tom McCamus as lovers who meet over the years. Pic opens in Canada Nov. 16, and could do some biz in the States, too, if the right distributer checks into its freewheeling mix of decade-hopping period detail and shades-drawn sexuality.
....
The strongest storyline - and the one with the most startling sex scenes - finds “Exotica’s” Kirshner all grown up as a confident hooker whose dominatrix mask (and more) slips when McCamus’ gentle john truly falls for her.

Canoe Jam!Movies 11/15/01: Tom McCamus Century Hotel a movie worth checking into
By CLAIRE BICKLEY November 15, 2001
Assignations between a prostitute (Mia Kirshner) and a regular (Tom McCamus) reflect the financial ups and downs of the 1980s.
....
Everybody will have his own favorites. Mine is the bittersweet X-Rated, with Kirshner and McCamus as the hooker and the John who yearn for their annual couplings to be something more.

The Globe and Mail 11/16/01: Tom McCamus Century Hotel proves grand only in design
Rick Groen Published Friday, Nov. 16 2001, 12:00 AM EST
An impressive array of Canadian actors -- including Colm Feore, Tom McCamus, Mia Kirshner and (in a dual role) Lindy Booth -- do a nice job of fleshing out their individual parts.

Playback 12/19/01: Tom McCamus Surprises mark Genie noms
by: Mark Dillon Dec 19, 2001
"Unexpected" is likely the best word to characterize this year's Genie nominations. No doubt many will be surprised by what isn't nominated. Absent among the best motion picture finalists are some of 2001's most high-profile Canadian releases.
....
Century Hotel, David Weaver's debut feature about goings-on in a single hotel room over a period of 100 years, boasts a high-profile cast including Colm Feore, Tom McCamus, Mia Kirshner, Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida of the band Our Lady Peace, but was only able to muster noms for cinematography and original song.

Current Film 5/1/02: Tom McCamus Century Hotel: A Review by Mark McLeod
May 1st 2002
In terms of males one of the stronger performances comes from Tom McCamus who plays Nicholas the john who meets up with Mia's Dominique each year during the 80s. He too shows an excellent range as his character changes over the years from a worried married man to someone with not a worry in the world. McCamus is a veteran of over 20 projects in Canada yet is unknown south of the border. Hopefully he'll take on a role in a prominent Canadian film that hits it big so that Americans can see what they are missing.

Film Freak Central 5/20/13: Tom McCamus Century Hotel (2001) - DVD
May 20, 2013 by Walter Chaw
The bits seem to progress towards a natural end, but with the exception of the Kirshner/McCamus segment, each is forced into some sort of poetic contrivance that undermines honesty and feel.
....
For the melancholy and steam of Kirshner's and McCamus's performances alone, Century Hotel gets a recommendation; for the varying weaknesses of the other plots and devices, that recommendation is not a strong one.
