Karen Allen remembers string of actors before Harrison Ford
By Jay Bobbin October 29, 2010 5:43 PM ET

Actress Karen Allen says if things had gone differently, one of her "National Lampoon's Animal House" cronies also might have been her Indiana Jones. The actress who played Marion Ravenwood tested with several well-known talents before the makers of the 1981 adventure-movie classic "Raiders of the Lost Ark" decided on Harrison Ford.
....
A star of CBS' new "Hallmark Hall of Fame" drama "November Christmas" Sunday, Nov. 28, Allen recalls her "Raiders" test with Matheson as "a blast. He was really a lot of fun, as was John Shea (the former Lex Luthor of "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," who also had tried out to play Jones). In the end, though, I can't imagine anyone else in that role but Harrison."

The Making Of Raiders Of The Lost Ark: The making of the original Indy film, from the mouths of the people who made it.

Allen: Steven had seen me in A Small Circle Of Friends and I was aware that there were a lot of people being talked about: Barbara Hershey, Debra Winger, Sean Young. I auditioned first with John Shea, who was trying out for Indy, and then I did a screen test with Tim Matheson, who I'd worked with on Animal House.
