Actor, journalist and filmmaker Gerald L'Ecuyer basically plays himself in an odd new reality-based series called It's Me . . . Gerald, debuting Sunday night on Showcase. Spun off from his documentary Gerald L'Ecuyer: A Filmmaker's Journey, the six-part filmed-in-Toronto comedy miniseries has a documentary crew following him around as he tries to put together his nutty vision of a stage production of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. L'Ecuyer says they shot the six episodes "in 11 insane days" and feels it turned out quite well. The cast includes Tom McCamus, Tracy Wright and Luke Kirby. (Sunday, Sept. 4, Showcase)

Also airing this weekend: It's Me . . . Gerald (Sunday, Showcase, 9:30 p.m.) is wonderful. Utterly captivating and often truly hilarious, it's a mock-documentary about the travails of director Gerald L'Ecuyer as he attempts to mount a stage production of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. (He's under the impression it's set in Russia, and there's a priceless moment when actor Tom McCamus informs him it's set in Norway, Ibsen being a native of that country.)
