Scorpion King The new Scorpion King is…
By Hollywood Insider | October 6, 2010
Hearing that ex-Melrose Place and Castle star Victor Webster has been cast as the new Scorpion King, a role made famous by Dwayne Johnson. Webster, you may recall, was up for Superman Returns at one point. The Roel Reine (Death Race 2) helmed Scorpion King : Rise of the Dead film will see Mathayus (Webster) taking on impenetrable bad dudes in the wilds of the Northern Tribes in 3000 BC. Webster beat muscleman Mike O’Hearn - also a Superman contender - to the part.

Ron Perlman is reuniting with Hellboy bankers Universal on The Scoprion King 3. Billy Zane is also onboard the film, which is set just before the events of The Scorpion King and sees Victor Webster (as we exclusively reported in October) reprising the role made famous by a guy then known simply as ‘The Rock’. The $6 million dollar movie is currently shooting in Bangkok.

The film, which began shooting on October 29 in and around Bangkok, introduces an all new cast featuring Victor Webster ("Melrose Place," Surrogates) as Mathayus; Ron Perlman ("Sons of Anarchy," Hellboy 1 and 2) as Horus, the powerful King of Egypt; Billy Zane ("Samantha Who?," Titanic) as the conniving King Talus; UFC star Kimbo Slice as Zulu Kondo; Bostin Christopher as Mathayus' comrade-in-arms Olaf (Unbreakable); WWE champion Dave Bautista as Agromael; Selina Lo (28 Weeks Later) as Tsukai; Krystal Vee (Streetfighter: The Legend of Chin-Li) as the beautiful princess Silda and Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith) as the ill-fated King Ramusan.
....
As The Scorpion King 3 begins, Mathayus has lost his beloved queen and been driven from his former kingdom by a virulent plague. Now, an assassin for hire, Mathayus is dispatched by Horus, the King of Egypt, to protect his ally King Ramusan from imminent attack. In return for his services, he is promised Ramusan's daughter Silda in marriage, as well as the legendary Eye of the Gods medallion, which imparts supernatural powers to its wearer. But to collect the reward, he will have to first rescue the princess, who is being held captive by Talus, the scheming brother of Horus. Mathayus agrees to the perilous mission, but the evil that lies in wait for him will challenge even his cunning and strength in a staggering test of courage unlike any he has faced before.

Tr3s 1/3/12: Victor Webster Exclusive: Victor Webster Shares Secrets From 'The Scorpion King'
By Michael Lopez
This time out, Victor Webster will be taking on the iconic role and doing battle with the epic forces of ancient Egypt. Webster spoke with us exclusively about what fans can expect from the sequel. "Working on The Scorpion King 3 was one of the best experiences of my life," he explained. “Running around, playing a barbarian, working with elephants, it was incredible!”
Interestingly, Scorpion King 3 includes another famous barbarian in its cast, namely Conan star Ron Perlman. Victor went on to say that working with Ron was a blast, as was his on set experience with co-star Billy Zane. "Billy is very gregarious and charming," Webster told us. "While Ron is much more stoic. Being able to work between the two of them was great."
In this outing, the King (aka Mathayus) is sent on an adventure to recover the legendary Book of the Dead. Whoever possesses the writings, has the power to control the greatest warriors from beyond the grave (which include MMA stars Dave Batista and Kimbo Slice). Obviously with those kind of powerhouse figures on set, you can bet King 3 will be packed with action scenes. "I loved the action in this movie," Victor went on to say. "My martial arts training actually helped a lot with knowing how to throw punches and kicks. It also helped with the fight choreography."
Webster actually has quite an extensive background in martial arts. A trained black belt, he's used his fighting skills for roles in Mutant X and V.I.P. But Victor's also proven himself to be a very capable comedic actor, having scored laughs on shows like Reba, Becker, and Drop Dead Diva. "One of the great things about Scorpion King 3, is that it blends in a lot of comedy and action," he explained. "I think it's a great movie for everyone. There are really a lot of larger-than-life characters in this installment."
And it's also interesting to point out that this latest Scorpion King is part Latino. Webster explained that he is quite proud of the Spanish blood he inherited from his mom’s side of the family. And having seen the film, Victor should be very proud of his performance too. Hopefully, if all goes well, we can see him slaying mummies, demigods, and undead MMA fighters for many sequels to come!

Tr3s Blokely 1/5/12: Victor Webster Victor Webster: Meet The Star Of The Scorpion King 3 The ex-stockbroker talks Thailand, martial arts training and acting opposite MMA fighters
By James York, 3 January 2012
Given that you didn't train as an actor, how did you get into the trade?
I kind of stumbled into it. I was a stockbroker, I worked for an export company - I was doing all kinds of stuff. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life so I took a trip to Europe as I’d done a bit of modelling out of high school. I went back to modelling just to make some easy money while I was over there and then when I came back, I took some acting classes. And things just carried on from there. I started booking jobs and I realised that one of the things I hated about doing what I was doing before was that I was stuck in the same job every single day. Acting gave me the opportunity to travel, to play different characters all the time, to have fun, to have some free time, to enjoy life. It was the perfect fit.
You’ve worked with some beautiful co-stars. Hollywood media trained answers aside: who was the nicest you’ve worked with?
That’s a tough one! I’ve had some really fun jobs in my life. I just worked with a girl named Candace Cameron [Full House] who was a sweetheart, she was great. I’ve been pretty lucky - everybody I’ve worked with has been really great. In this movie, [MMA fighter] Kimbo Slice and [former WWE wrestler] Dave Batista have a great sense of humour and were really fun to hang around. I don’t think I’ve been in this business and worked with someone I didn’t like. I’ve been very fortunate!
Who’s your hero?
My mum's a hero and Bruce Lee's a hero. Those two are top of my list.
In your latest movie, you star beside the great Ron Perlman. Have you 'perls' of wisdom you can share with us…
Not specifically, like where he said ‘hey kid, do this’. It’s just looking at the guy talk and hearing about all the stories he’s been through in his life - you can pick up many pearls of wisdom from that. He’s definitely seen a lot and done a lot in this business and in his life as well.
Given that most of your work so far has been on US TV, do you get more out of this movie than an established big screen actor would?
I loved the franchise - I loved the first and the second movie. I saw the first movie three or four times before I even considered or knew anything about The Scorpion King 3. I love action movies - I love movies where you can ride around on a horse, or in this movie, an elephant. And I also got to work in Thailand. I’d been to Thailand once before - I shot a movie in China then afterwards went to Thailand and fell in love with the country, the people. Thinking that I could be over there for three months shooting this big epic movie, everything was just so perfect, I couldn’t resist.
There have already been two Scorpion King films, the first of which featured The Rock. Why should our readers take time to check out the third instalment?
It’s beautifully shot, there are huge epic battles from beginning to end - it’s action, action, action. And there’s a lot of comedy in there too. And it shows off Thailand in all its glory.
You’re a trained martial arts expert. What advice would you give to the average man for getting involved in that. Can he learn it without spending dollars on classes?
Oh, for sure. These days with the Internet and YouTube being so readily available, you can learn martial arts easily. But you have to be able to put it into practice. That’s the thing with martial arts - you can learn how to punch and kick a punching bag but in order to actually know how to use it as effectively as it could be, you have to practice with somebody.
If there was a Scorpion King 4, would you do it?
Without a doubt. I wouldn’t even hesitate. I had so much fun working on this one and in this business, I think when you have an opportunity to have a really good time doing what you do, I think that’s what life’s all about. Do the things that you have to do in your life but enjoy them and make them fun, and this was the perfect combination of that.
The Scorpion King 3: Battle For Redemption is released on Blu-ray and DVD on 27 February from Universal Pictures UK

Blokely Trailer Addict 1/4/11: Victor Webster Scorpion King video interview Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption Generic Interview - Victor Webster
Victor: I'm Mathayus. This takes place a number of years after the first one. I've pretty much lost everything that's important to me, everybody that I've loved. And I kind of go on this journey as a mercenary, selling my sword and my services to the highest bidder. And in doing that, I get sent on this quest. And while I'm on this quest, I kind of get reminded about the things that are important in life. It's beautiful locations, huge battle sequences, explosions, incredible choreography, really interesting characters. You're really taken on a ride. There was a lot of preparation. First of all, I had to put on a lot of weight. I had to get as big as I could. I think I ended up being about 245 pounds when we shot this, because The Rock was massive, and I couldn't go in and not be a big barbarian type guy. And then a lot of it, we had a month of fight training in Thailand beforehand in Bangkok. We were with Kawee Seng and Jimmy and stunt coordinator and a fight coordinator, and they put us through the wringer. We worked 6 days a week, 8 hours a day, practicing every single fight. Every single fight you see in the movie, we knew all of the steps way before we even started shooting. We had all that up in our heads, so we had already taken a huge toll physically before we even started shooting, because you're getting beat up and smashed around. Billy is a very interesting person, in a good way. He's very eccentric, very smart, very worldly. Just totally wacky when he goes into character, a total wacky king, you know. And he really comes to life in this movie. I think he actually steals the movie, because he's so good in it. Ron is this big, strong stoic guy in real life, and in his character. Being on set with these guys, t completely opposite ends of the spectrum, it was so fun being around these different energies. When you get the Blu-Ray, you get the DVD, there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff, a lot of extra scenes. You see us joking around, you see us -- see what it was like in the fight training. You really get a sense of what it was like to be there with us, shooting, and what a good time it was. And you get to hear from everybody in the movie, what we think about each other, what we think about Roel. What Roel was thinking when he was shooting, doing all this stuff. So you really get into the mind of all of us.

KDVR Fox 31 1/5/12: Victor Webster The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (Blu-ray) Universal Home Entertainment / 2011 / 106 mins / PG-13
11:19 a.m. MST, January 5, 2012
SCORPION KING 3 is a fun, dopey little movie in its own right. Webster is very likable and he plays very well off of Christopher. Perlman always delivers no matter what role he is assigned. Zane is having waaaaayy too much fun but his over-the-top goofiness fits into the fluffy world director Reine has crafted here. The fights, while elaborate, are very much of the HERCULES and XENA variety where our heroes basically have to touch an opponent for them to go down. But it doesn’t feel at all like it is taking place in THE MUMMY’s or THE SCORPION KING’s universe. Writers Brendan Cowles and Shane Kuhn have packed the script with so many modern sounding jokes, one-liners and come backs that the film feels even sillier than it actually is. It feels like an episode of Kevin Sorbo’s series. Which isn’t a bad thing; it just isn’t what it is claiming to be.

IGN 1/9/12: Victor Webster The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption Blu-ray Review: No redemption here.
by R.L. Shaffer
January 9, 2012
The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption seems to be a sequel to the first film, minimally following elements of that narrative.
....
The rest of the movie consists of wretched dialogue, awful acting (Victor Webster stumbles over every sentence he's handed), and stagey action, much of which plays more like rehearsal than the real deal.

The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption
Hulking Canadian actor Victor Webster, from Calgary, is the third man to play Mathayus, the Akkadian mercenary in this spin-off from the Mummy franchise. Webster is the clearly worst actor but also the funniest one. In fact, everything about The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption is meant to be amusing. This sword-and-sandals epic is played for cheap laughs.

Mania 1/17/12: Victor Webster The Scorpion King 3: The Battle For Redemption: Weak sequel has few positives
By Tim Janson January 17, 2012
The Scorpion King 3: The Battle for Redemption is the third film in the Scorpion King franchise although it is the first sequel to the 2002 film as the second film was actually a prequel.
....
In the entire morass there are a few faint beacons of positive light. Billy Zane just goes all out and has a lot of fun in his role as Talus. He gleefully over-dramatizes every line he has but at least he has some life. More than you can say for Perlman who looks like he’s about to nod off. Does he have a contract that says he has to be in every film made? There’s also some great eye-candy in the forms of Krystal Vee and Selina Lo who have the film’s best fight scene. And a word about Victor Webster in the starring role…he might not be much of an actor but he has a good look…tall, well-built. I’d have loved to seen him play Conan the Barbarian…at least over Jason Mamoa.

What Culture 2/27/12: Victor Webster The Scorpion King 3: Battle For Redemption Blu-ray Review
February 27, 2012 11:36 am Stuart Cummins
Don’t get stung by The Scorpion King 3…it’s a poor piece of cinema that’s hard for even diehard fans to enjoy! Available on DVD and Blu-ray from today, check out our review below…
....
To add insult to injury, the performances from the key cast are suitably terrible too. Victor Webster ‘stars’ as Mathayus, the former Scorpion King. Webster is all brawn and limited talent. He’s effective in the action sequences (he looks awesome in the opening sequence that sees him sword fight a villain whilst dangling from the ceiling, one arm tied to a rope). However, when it comes to actually acting and delivering dialogue he’s rather wooden, which doesn’t really fill audiences with the sense that he was once a powerful ruler.

What Culture Celebs.com video interview 6/11/12: Victor Webster Victor Webster Interview
Victor: Hey, I'm Victor Webster. Thanks for joining us here for Scorpion King 3. I love being on there, Celebs.com. Check it out; come say hi. Check out the whole thing. Do what you do.
Angela: Nice to meet you. I'm Angela Bakke from Celebs.com.
Victor: Nice to meet you, Angela.
Angela: Thanks for talking to us today.
Victor: Of course.
Angela: Big big project for you, right?
Victor: Huge project. Project I'm really excited about.
Angela: Would you say this is the biggest of your career?
Victor: Ah, for sure. Yeah.
Angela: What was it like? Just walk me through a day. You wake up. You're on set in Thailand. You're like, "I'm shooting The Scorpion King 3. I'm the Scorpion King."
Victor: It was really intense in a good way. You know, every day we'd wake up, because we're shooting exteriors, so we'd be getting up at 3 o'clock in the morning or 4 o'clock in the morning. And usually if I have to get up at that time, I'm a grumpy bear. Just forget about it. But I'd wake up, I'd look around my hotel room, and I'd realize what I was there doing and be looking forward to getting on set and swinging a sword and working with these great people I got an opportunity to work with. And it was just truly a pleasure. I had so much fun.
Angela: Great cast of characters in this one, huh?
Victor: Right?
Angela: I mean, from what I could tell, it's like each character just seemed really interesting in their own right.
Victor: Yeah. Yeah.
Angela: Had you been following the franchise? Were you a fan already?
Victor: Oh, I loved the first one. I think I probably saw the first one five or six times before I even thought about auditioning for this one. And, you know, I thought The Rock killed it. I think they did an incredible job there. And I saw the second one. You know, I'm a big fight fan. So I saw it because, you know, Randy was in it, and that brought me in. I then got an opportunity to work on this one. And I hope we're doing the franchise a service. I think that we put our heart and our soul into this, and I think when people watch the movie, they'll see that.
Angela: Now you mention The Rock. Did it ever mess with your head to be in there like, "I don't know, because I'm....man, am I doing this as well as him?"
Victor: It was never intimidating, but I knew that I had some big shoes, like literally big shoes to fit into. I think the biggest thing that motivated me was knowing that The Rock did that. And when I was in the gym working out, trying to put on as much size as I could, that that was a motivation that kept pushing me.
Angela: Yeah, because the last movie was a prequel, so it was a kid.
Victor: Yeah.
Angela: But this is the next one, so it's going to be a direct comparison. But you just let that drive you to a better performance? You don't think about it that way.
Victor: No, I figured I'm never going to be able to be The Rock. I'm going to have to do my own thing, bring my own sensibilities to the character. And it's a completely different script and a totally different story, so I think it kind of allowed me to have that wiggle room to do whatever I wanted to do with that, and just really have fun.
Angela: And you are massive in this movie. Huge!
Victor: It's all smoke and mirrors.
Angela: What did you do? You just ate like meat and potatoes every day?
Victor: Oh, I ate small children and cars. Oh, I just, every three hours I was eating, putting in as much food as I could. I had a good buddy of mine, two good friends of mine that helped me prepare for this, and put me through a training regimen. And just lifting, just as heavy as possible, to get as much size. I think I got up about 245 pounds.
Angela: Yeah, 'cause your background's karate, right? Which is usually leaner. How did you feel in your body, being all bulky like that? Were you more aggressive? Did you walk around like, "Did you look at me wrong?"
Victor: No, no, no. I mean, I naturally have that aggressive side, because I'm still training three days a week. I'm competing, and so I have that aggressive side to me, for sure. But that's all in check, and I love people and all that kind of stuff. But it'd definitely helped to get me in character, being that big. I felt strong; I felt mean. I was just eating all the time. I just felt really like a barbarian, the beard, the hair. And it wasn't that hard to get into character, you know what I mean?
Angela: Oh, yeah! You're just reminding me. Yeah, you look all beefy and hairy and then I walk in today, and you're all...
Together: J. Crew.
Victor: That's a good way to describe it.
Angela: Great, thank you so much.
Victor: Yeah, thank you very much, Angela. Okay.
Angela: Nice meeting you. [He shakes her hand a little too hard.] Ow!

The SciFi World 6/8/12: Victor Webster Victor Webster interview
8th June 2012
Most recently, Victor Webster starred as the scorpion king in the third installment to the film franchise; The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption.
....
Gilles Nuytens: So, you took the role left by The Rock in Scorpion King 3, how did you land playing this mythic character?
Victor Webster: I met with the director, with the casting director, we talked a lot about the character and then I just auditioned for it. It was pretty simple, we went back and forth about 4 or 5 times, 4 or 5 meetings and working the character, they wanted to see what I could do physically as far as martial arts and they wanted me to get some weapons, some punching and kicking and some movement, so the combination of working out the character and seeing the physicality of the role, they offered me the part.
Gilles Nuytens: Replacing the role left by someone else isn't easy, so how did you prepare to become Mathayus?
Victor Webster: Well the first thing is, I don't know if you have noticed, The Rock is huge [laughs]! First thing I had to do, I was about 225 pounds at the time and I wanted to get as big as possible and I had about 4 or 5 months to do that. So the first thing I did was hitting the gym, eating and taking all those supplements and trying to put on as much size as I could because he's supposed to be a big, intimidating, imposing man. The next thing I did is I watched the other movies and then I had to go breaking down the character, this character is completely different from the other movies, so it required me to really analyze everything, everything that he's been through.
Gilles Nuytens: All the 3 episodes of The Scorpion King are very different from each other, very different tones. How would you describe Scorpion King 3 compared to the other ones?
Victor Webster: Scorpion King 3 is a little darker, it feels a little heavier in the sense that he has so much to deal with himself, personally, in the place that he's in and he now has to go through that all over again, dealing with those obstacles. It looks different, René the director uses a lot of hand held, a lot of frenetic camera movements, it's very fast paced when you watch a lot of the action, very quick cuts, fast paced and very interesting stylish way of shooting. The first 2 are more like a typical Hollywood movie the way they are shot. I love the first one, really funny and I love The Rock, I think he did a great job and still stands up as an excellent movie. So it was different in the way it was shot, the tone of the movie.
Gilles Nuytens: What did you bring to Mathayus? Which part of your personality did you give to him?
Victor Webster: Well there is a lot of intenseness to this particular Mathayus, he's dealing with the loss of everything he's ever known and loved, he's travelling around basically looking for someone to kill him because he cannot commit suicide. He's looking for a warriors death, he's a mercenary for hire, so that being said, I brought lot more intensity, a little darkness, still trying to find those moments of humor and levity in midst of all of it, but definitely that feeling of loss.
Gilles Nuytens: What have you learned from your experience on that movie?
Victor Webster: That I can get the crap kicked out of me every single day and still get up and be able to move [laughs]. Very physically strenuous, everything in my body hurts for about 6 weeks afterwards.

CSI Con 7/27/12: Victor Webster The Dialogue: Victor Webster
By Breki Tomasson, July 27, 2012 11:04 pm
Q: Are there any other projects you’re involved with at the moment apart from Continuum and Growl?
-I’ve got a movie coming out called Puppy Love which is a romantic comedy with Candace Cameron Bure. That’s a fun little romantic comedy. And then I just finished a movie called Bloodline which is a kind of psychological thriller / vampire horror movie, that’ll be coming out next year. And then there’s … September eleventh, I did an episode of White Collar that Renny Harlin directed, that’s a departure from their usual type of episode, there’s a lot of action in this episode and you get to see Tim DeKay and Matt Bomer in a different situation that you normally would - I wouldn’t want to spoil anything - and then we’re waiting to find out if they want to do another Scorpion King movie, which we may be doing.
Q: That must have been an interesting experience.
-I’ll tell you what, that was one of the most best experiences of my entire life. I was in Thailand for three months, a month of fight training and working with these incredible stunt guys. These Thai guys will throw themselves through plate glass windows with no pads on - they just have no sense of self-preservation whatsoever. It’s insane what these guys will do.
Q: Also, acting opposite Ron Perlman must have been an experience, too.
-Yeah; I mean, you’re in these beautiful locations with these tropical waterfalls and being picked up by elephants and thrown, these huge action sequences and these huge battle scenes every day. Then you’ve got Ron Perlman in the movie, he plays my king and my employer, he’s got this gravitas when you’re on set, he’s just so powerful and strong, and then you’ve got just out there, batty, Billy Zane and his character was so interesting. Those two couldn’t be more opposite of each other, Ron Perlman smokes cigars and drinks vodka, just a man’s man kind of guy and Billy’s just very eccentric; he’s kind of like a mad professor but very smart and very interesting. Then you’ve got Kevin ‘Kimbo Slice’ Ferguson and Dave Bautista, such an eclectic group of people brought into this movie. Then you’ve got my sidekick, Bostin Christopher, who played Olaf, just a really fun, big, jolly guy. I just had an amazing time.

Reddit 12/13/14: Victor Webster [-]LeonidasKing The Rock is of course known for his formidable physique and outsized charisma on screen. What are you trying to achieve physically and performance wise that is different from The Rock? Thanks! And good luck. Looking forward to sk4!
[-]VictorWebster[S] Thank you, I appreciate that. The Rock is some big boots to step into, so I didn't try to imitate him in any way. SK3 was also a departure from the first one the Rock did. It was darker and more dramatic, but I think you'll find that SK4 will have a LOT more humor and is much more similar to the first Scorpion King.
