November 10, 2003, Brandon, Manitoba BY JOHN MCKAY TORONTO
Only war could produce such grim irony. Both the first and last Allied soldier to die in the First World War perished on almost exactly the same spot in Mons, Belgium. And the last official death of the War to End All Wars hurtled a 25 year old Canadian private into history when he was shot by a German sniper at two minutes before 11 on Nov. 11, 1938, when the armistice officially came into effect. First and Last is a remarkable documentary debuting Tuesday night on CBCTV that tracks amateur historians who in turn are devoted to tracking down details of the wars first death a British private named John Parr who was shot 1914 and the infantryman George Price of Kings and Moose The two are also buried close to each other in the Belgian towns war cemetery.

First and Last is narrated by actor Tom McCamus and is stylishly produced with sepiatinted sequences that give the program a period feel.
