A very important question pertaining to a matter of life or death:

Is provolone supposed to taste like barf? I think brie tastes a little bit like barf, but not strongly and not in a bad way, and every time I've had provolone before, it's just been pleasantly milky. And I've had other cheeses before that tasted like barf with different overtones, and apparently that was how they were supposed to taste, so who ( Read more... )

No, but it smells kind of funny. I... I don't understand cheeses. :(

(Oh, man, every time the Anal Biochem journal comes up when I'm scanning, my mind boggles. There's a whole series of these, seriously, so it's not just one journal: Anal Biochem, Anal Cell Pathol, Anal Chem, Anal Chim Acta. Anal stands for Analytical EVERY TIME. I don't understand why they don't abbreviate it to Analyt.)

I guess it must be mislabeled then (I bought it yesterday), but it still tastes like barf so I'll go return it. I am not sophisticated enough to enjoy that sort of thing.

And, haha, I guess you're right. Biologists are people too!

Provolone IMHO tastes a *little* like barf, if it's really sophisticated imported Armani-wearing Provolone. But Romano is the one that *really* tastes like barf, to me. And Swiss is the one where it's not very good barf . . .

OK, now I've disgusted myself.

Hahaha, I am glad to meet someone who thinks some cheeses taste like barf and isn't afraid to say it. The provolone was an ordinary pre-sliced sandwich brand, so it wouldn't be too sophisticated, but, um... come to think of it, maybe I bought sharp instead of mild. That would explain a lot, actually.

I guess I'll just get mozzarella next time. :)

I have to say that it's been about 4 years since i've heard/read the word "barf." Bravo.

When do you get back to PDX?

Oh! Sorry, this languished in my inbox for a bit. I'll be back on August 23rd! I'm excited to be going back, although I'm not sure where exactly I'll stay--with Austen, if he'll let me.

Also, barf is a fantastic word!

Re: "anal biochem": I have just this afternoon seen billboards proclaming "Anus And Intestine Diseases, Beijing". I am not sure what the Chinese says, but I... I'm not sure I ever need to find out, really.

Did... did I ever tell you the story about the Chinese restaurant with a big ol' sign that read, "LOBSTER FUCKS POT"? I had a photo of it, though I'm not sure where it went. But that is my favorite Engrish sign in the WORLD.

Sour milk smells like barf to me, but that could just be my sauce bernaise syndrome talking.

I *knew* it was spelled "bearnaise." But stupid http://www.onelook.com didn't have a listing for "sauce bearnaise syndrome," just "sauce bernaise syndrome."

Auugh, I think sour milk smells like barf to everyone. My mother was raised in a really poor part of China, so she used to make us eat half-rancid food all the time so it wouldn't go to waste, even though we were pretty well-off at that point. :/

Huh, the Sauce Bearnaise Syndrome probably explains why I can't stand those spicy tuna rolls anymore, even though I loved them at first.

Uh, you know, I don't know why I brought that anecdote up. *puzzled* Anyways.
