on the carpal tunnel -- I will totally butt in and say be really wary of this diagnosis! It is often wrong and braces can make things worse rather than better. The best things I have found for my hand and wrist pain is:
* regularly lifting weights (5lbs, bicep curls and tricep kickbacks) * handeze gloves (look silly, work 10000000x better than the various braces) * stress balls/silly putty/finger squeezer on the desk -- squeezing stuff and playing with it nonstop helps more than anything * ergonomic chair & kb height that keeps feet on floor & arms at right angles

YES LIFT WEIGHTS. I use 2lb weights with my wrists, I just sit there curling and uncurling slooooooowly while watching TV or reading LJ, and they have been the best thing ever for my tendonitis. if not having a set of weights around is keeping you from doing it, try using a soda can.
we're living the same lifestyle, down to salary, aching wrists, and pointless art-making. i've been writing stories about mold. our apartment is always really warm, though, because heat is included in the rent.
