What a complicated situation this is. Back in her world, in Manhattan, Chane had just begun to accept the fact that Claire was sincere about his marriage proposal to her. Probably given his determined speech at the warehouse when they had been reunited about his feelings. While she gave him no answer to his proposal, she did agree to at least accept and consider his feelings and see whether or not there was a chance she could reciprocate them. If she were to be honest with herself, it wouldn't be difficult to, but Chane is still wary, still cautious and still learning to deal with people genuinely wanting to know her, to like her and to love her.
In Death City, however, she has found herself in a confusing predicament. She remembers the conversation in the warehouse, and her promise to consider Claire's feelings, but Claire himself doesn't. His feelings aren't any different, as he remembers sending her the dress she was wearing when she arrived in Death City, but anything after that is a blank to him. In a way, this buys her more time. With Claire unaware of her promise, there is less... pressure on her to consider things, and she hopefully has more time to see where things stand with this strange man. Or to give him enough to realise, as she still believes, that there is little of Chane Laforet worth loving. No one else has tried before, after all.
