Oh, I wish I was still there - I left on the 6.30 train this morning!
We bought the Yome house because of the views - a huge lawn, which the Corporation pays to mow, and the entire population of York turns out to entertain us upon, with a variety of ball sports (but No Golf Allowed), and most of all, with dog walking.
We are cat walking, an it has been great fun (and probably immoral) to watch dogs scent cat and get VERY excited and tell their owners all about it - much to owners confusion.
On one of the occassions I walked Broggy, an off-lead greyhound stalked past, ignoring Brogs entirely, but worrying me greatly, but apart from that and an elderly Spaniel who seemed to think Broggy was another elderly spaniel, we have been lucky in keeping actual cat away from the dogs.
Many things can be grown in deep pots. Not having visited Yome I have no idea which of your yards is the best for sun, which is the most important thing. If there is a nice sunny spot, I would recommend some herbs in pots and maybe tomatoes. I grow a load of these each year in pots, but you need to make sure they are really well tied into stakes, possibly you could tie them onto a fence or wall. I have had losses when mine went made and grew into the buddlia and were snapped by wind; they had grown miles higher than the stakes. You need to stop the growth when the reach the top of the stakes. Start them off indoors.
I would not recommend parsnips as they have a poor germination rate and need a lot of depth for the roots, but you again could try in deep pots. How about carrots? Also herbs?
I find our local garden centre does beautiful expensive deep pots, but if you look hard they have a value range of big cheap plain pottery pots, which are good value.
Thanks - I think none of our yards is good for sun, except possibly the front one, which is narrow. Pots would be good there.
Herbs, yes, definitely a good idea. Flat leaved parsley, thyme, and rosemary.
We do have a fence to tie tomatoes to. Also, now I think about it, sugar snap peas and mange tout.
Thinking about it, a high tressel thingy is probably better if the growbags are not to become cat toilets. Pots are less apealing, easier to ward, I think, than the growbags on the ground.

Our house is probably just off to the left of the picture, but it's difficult to tell, behind the trees.
