Slight matter of scale

ExMemSec and I have been training ourselves to climb the Volcano on Tristan. Yesterday we started at 208m, and reached 704m at Great Whernside. OK, I did sit down once and say I wasn't going on, and at the lunch break ate two bites of a sandwich and then stared at the middle distance for ten minutes. But bgs started at 5, ended at 5.6, and ( Read more... )

ExMemSec reckons that I could climb to the summit, but the problem is my speed. I am very hesitant over any terrain that isn't very even. So while the rest of the world sets off before six am, with the idea of getting back well before midnight on the same day, I'd need to camp out and hope to get back before midnight on the following day.

The volcano has an up, an along, and an up (Great Wharfdale has an up, a very very up, another very up, an along and what the map shows is a very up but psychologically is very very very up). So I might get to 'Base' (the along between two ups). No idea how high that is.

Ok, Base is 690m. http://www.summitpost.org/up-to-the-hub-of-utopia-climbing-tristan-da-cunha-s-queen-mary-s-peak/566485 'not for the vertiginous', heh? What about the vertiginous, partially sighted, weak-ankled, asthmatic diabetics? I'm going to assume they all cancel each other out.

Cross Fell is 693m ascent from Kirkland. So if I can do that, I can do Base.
