August 3, 2000
(Yunho- 30 / Jaejoong- 14)
The next time Yunho met the younger version of his fiancé, he was not there He was on the clearing on the expected time, but Jaejoong was nowhere to be found. School was probably still on-going, and so he make use of his time, wading through the plants, wearing the clothes Jaejoong prepared for him and eating the thoughtful set of snacks laid on the picnic blanket. How the young boy managed to get all of these out of the house without getting interrogated by his parents, Yunho will never know.
It was late summer and the whole meadow was blue and orange with flowers growing profoundly everywhere. He eventually fell asleep on the blanket, waiting. When he woke up, the sun was already setting and Jaejoong was sitting next to him, reading a book. His smile was brighter than the sunshine, Yunho thought idly. “Rise and shine, time to get up!”
Groaning, he sat up and rubbed his eyes, “Hello, Jaejoong. What’s the date?”
“August 3, 2000.”
Ah so he was right, Jaejoong was now in his prepubescent days. A strange and difficult age but not as difficult as what he was going through in the present. Yunho yawned a lot and surmised he wasn’t fully awake yet. He requested for fresh brewed coffee and it wasn’t surprising when Jaejoong gave him a confused look. He only began to like coffee when they started living together.
“I don’t know how to make coffee.” Jaejoong pouted, considering it as if it was such a new substance or something.
Yunho batted his eyelashes, “Pretty please?”
Rolling his eyes yet aiming to please, Jaejoong stood up and dusted off the back of his pants. “Okay, I’ll try.” He slowly made his way back to the house. Yunho’s eyes observed the certain body changes during the past couple of years he missed. Though a bit lanky, he was becoming more and more beautiful. In order to keep his thoughts about Jaejoong’s youthful body go astray, he picked up the book on the ground and read a bit of it. He didn’t even reach the climactic part when Jaejoong returned with cups, a thermos and some scones. He looked absolutely adorable and Yunho fought the urge to run his hands through his midnight hair, which fell gently around his face.
“Thank you.” He received the offered beverage and food. He poured himself a cup and drank. “Whoa! Oh god, that’s like a rocket fuel!” he shook his head violently at the strong taste bouncing around his palate.
“Too strong?” Jaejoong asked with a wince, feeling quite depressed. Yunho quickly tried to compliment him.
“Well… there’s no such thing as too strong but this is pretty strong.” He took a sip again, slowly beginning to enjoy the bitter taste. “I like it. Did you make it?”
Nodding, Jaejoong still looked unconvinced. “My sister was bothering me while I was making it… so I guess I did something wrong.”
“No, it’s fine.” He really didn’t mind. Jaejoong always made his coffee a bit more potent than usual anyway. The thought of the younger Jaejoong making coffee for him made it all better.
The younger boy grabbed a cup and tasted his own brew, only to spat it out and wince visibly at the taste in disgust. “Ew, is it supposed to taste like this? Disgusting!”
Yunho chuckled, “It’s supposed to be milder. You like your coffee with lots of cream and sugar.”
“That’s not fair.”
Unsure of what he did to upset the young boy, Yunho sipped his coffee and frowned. “What?”
Jaejoong crossed his arms and glared, “You can’t tell that I like my coffee that way before I hardly even taste it. How am I supposed to figure that on my own now? I like it now because you told me about my preference.”
“Jaejoongie, it’s just your personal taste. You’ll be able to figure that out on how you like your coffee whether I say anything or not. And besides, you’ve been bugging me to tell you something about the future, haven’t you?”
“The future is different from being told what I like.” Jaejoong insisted.
“It’s all about free-will. You can like what you like without everybody’s opinion about it.” Yunho watched as the boy took of his shoes and settled neatly on the blanket. They ate the doughnuts in silence, allowing the previous argument to wallow and dissipate.
“You said you didn’t want to alter history.”
Yunho couldn’t help but smile when Jaejoong placed his foot on his lap. The raven-head laughed as Yunho’s cold hands grazed the very pink and clean side. “I don’t. I’m telling you something that in unalterable.”
“Why do you always make sense?” Jaejoong sighed, a little soft that meant ‘I don’t want to fight anymore’.
“Because I’m from the future.” Briefly, he saw the untouched book next to Jaejoong’s head. “Nice choice of book to read by the way. You like that author a lot.”
Jaejoong laughed it off this time. Wiggling his toes at him, “You’re doing it again!”
“What?” Yunho questioned, feigning bafflement.
“Telling me what I like…” The pair of huge-doe-like eyes settled on him, as if there was a hidden message speaking in volumes to him mentally. Yunho could only stare back, and without thinking, place both of Jaejoong’s feet on his shoulders. It was only a few minutes that it occurred to him how the position looked too sexual. He quickly removed it and settled on the spot next to the giggling boy.
“Yunho?”
“Hm?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
Turning his head, Jaejoong gazed into the older man’s eyes, loving the play of light all around the handsome profile.
“For existing.”
And it took quite an immense of strength not to cry in front of him right there and then. Yunho swallowed the thick lump in his throat as he reached down to interlace his hand around Jaejoong’s. He was the first… and the last person who would always appreciate him for what he is.
