→ we're all just pieces in their games. (Hunger Games verse + Birdy's Just a game)
→ an: I was watching The Hunger Games and it inspired me to write a yunjae version of it... sort of.
Looking at Yunho simply produced a dull ache inside his chest, either from the feel of racing or the fact that in the end, he would remain unreachable. A tangible kind of pain goes through the back of his head this time.
Hearing the ravenous cry of the muttations down below, he tried to block it away as he concentrated more on his aggressor. Wind pipe gripped and crushed, all he could do was to scratch the skin of the back of the enemy’s hand.
It only took a couple of seconds before he could finally breathe again. Yunho landed a few punches on District one’s remaining warrior, breaking the nose and zygomatic bones. A tussle that seemed endless finally proclaimed Yunho victorious as he managed to throw the enemy off and into the hungry mutt’s salivating chops.
Getting up and limping towards his Yunho's side, he looked down on the man that mourned his defeat. His arrogance remained intact until the end, despite of the vicious creatures tearing off his flesh.
It was like a silent message of kindness when Yunho, all bloodied and fatigued turned towards him and softly uttered his name. “Jaejoong.” It sounded divine coming from him, as if he was some sort of a heavenly beacon that could put an end to the craziness.
Lifting his arms, he aimed at the dying man’s head and released the taut bow and arrow. The cries vanished and soon, the mutts left the petrifying remains of human flesh. It scared him how the colour of blood looked insignificant, considering how much bloodshed he witnessed for the past few days.
Yunho reached out and guided him down the ground, looking nothing but relieved. The artificial darkened weather matched the smile on his face as it gradually breaks into dawn.
The mockingjay sang a sycophantic tune and Jaejoong felt as if a thousand of bricks were lifted off his shoulders.
“Attention tributes, there’s a slight rule change. The previous provision allowing two victors from different districts has been revoked. Only one victor may be crowned. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favour.”
Swallowing became difficult, and so was turning around to face the boy from District two. This was the finale. The point where the star-crossed lovers are supposed to choose life or death. How fucking cliché.
When Yunho met his gaze, the man only nodded and smiled. From the beginning of the so-called attraction they had during the game, Yunho had a bit of suspicion that everything… was just a game. The first kiss felt like a bargaining act for sponsors. The second kiss felt like more passionate, but still, he couldn’t tell if Jaejoong even realized the difference.
Unbeknownst to him, Jaejoong figured it out all along.
They were lost and yet found each other to keep safe from harm. When Yunho interlaced their hands together, he suddenly found his place in the midst of deceit and cruelty.
But then again, they were just pieces in their games. In the end, there was no happy ending; at least not for him.
“Go ahead. One of us should go home. One of us should die so they can have their champion.”
The look of disapproval on his face confused Yunho. “No, they don’t.” stepping forward, he produced a handful of Nightlock berries. They’ll be dead before it reaches their stomach and Jaejoong’s more than determined to have it done rather than they kill each other.
Shaking his head, Yunho quickly gripped Jaejoong’s hand. “No!”
“Just trust me!” Despite of the cold, listless face Jaejoong’s most often seen with, his eyes were the warmest and most honest pair Yunho had ever seen. And just by looking at them, Yunho knew Jaejoong would eat the berries without a second thought.
Hesitating for awhile, Yunho finally gave in and accepted the small amount of berries Jaejoong placed on his palm. “Together?” he asked and the raven-head nodded.
Jaejoong replied, returning the taller man’s gaze. “On the count of three.”
Yunho began counting. “One…”
“Two.” Jaejoong continued, momentarily distracted when Yunho reached out to kiss him one last time.
“Three.” Yunho whispered against his lips, eyes boring deeply into the beautiful man’s orbs.
But before the poisonous fruit touched their lips, the announcer’s voice boomed across the battlefield. “Stop!” followed by a deafening silence. Bewildered at the unaccounted turnabout of events, both warriors looked up, waiting patiently for the verdict.
“Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the winners of the 74th Annual Hunger Games.”
