This was meant to be.

Even if the circumstance was one hell of a pain in the ass, Jaejoong thought that meeting Jung Yunho on that unexpected Tuesday night would’ve been the best cliché to ever happen in his life. It began when he was semi-forced to get a birthday present for his sister. She wasn’t one of his favourites but since his dad basically shoved bills on his face and ordered him to get her a CD, Jaejoong reluctantly dragged his sixteen year old self out of bed.

His ominous look threw people off most of the time. Who wouldn’t be? He looked like a stereotypical social recluse with his hair dyed light red and huge eyes rimmed with thick lines of kohl. Anyone could tell his utter dislike of anything colourful as he was donned black from head to toe.

The record store looked like any other store out there except the shopkeeper was a dumb looking teenager. Or at least he thought he was. He was about a couple of feet taller, hair spiked like a hedgehog and a little snaggletooth, but not to a point of unpleasantness. In fact, the boy looked kind of cute, except he looked way too happy. Way too trusting. Someone he would love to take advantage of.

“Welcome!” The guy greeted every customer that came in… not that there were a lot. While he was happily assisting one of the customers, Jaejoong grabbed the latest TOPSTAR CD without thinking. He knew his sister was obsessed with the bunch of pansy looking dudes and any merchandise of them would be an absolute treasure for her.

Once his birthday present was all set, he moved to his kind of music; the punk rock section and began to browse the CD’s. He found a couple to his liking… unfortunately he had no extra cash with him. Looking around, he spotted the gullible storekeeper talking to one of the customers, absolutely oblivious to the sixteen year old troublemaker. Quickly grabbing the CDs, he tucked them into the pocket of his jacket, schooling his features as if nothing suspicious ever happened.

“Hey,”

Snapping his head up, Jaejoong’s eyes bugged when he found the friendly shopkeeper already standing next to him. The last time he checked, he was way across the room. When did he pop out? “Um, here. I’m getting this.” he thrusts the TOPSTAR CD forward and as the guy assessed his purchase, he arched an eyebrow at him. “You like them?” he questioned in disbelief.

“It’s for my sister.” Jaejoong reasoned out, surmising that the smirk on the guy’s face told him that his outfit didn’t match the album he’s about to get.

The guy hummed in patronizing understanding. Jaejoong continued to glare and had eventually noticed the name tag clipped on his shirt. ‘Yunho’. At least now he had a name to the face. He used to just call him Hamtaro.

Yunho eyed the selection of punk rock albums he had been looking through before he turned to face him and smirked. “You know what? I got an awesome selection at the back. Maybe you should check that out.”

Blinking, Jaejoong asked softly, “Really?” Feeling absolutely thrilled at discovering more awesome music, he immediately perked at the idea. “Why do you keep them all back there?”

Shrugging, Yunho led the way, motioning for him to follow him. “Haven’t really gone around stacking them yet. As you can see, we’re quite short with the employees here.” And by that he meant, he was the ONLY employee around.

Nodding in understanding, Jaejoong secretly smiled, looking forward to actually getting to the records first. Yunho looked like they share the same interest music… he was just less of the stereotype and actually looked less vindictive.

“Here you go,” Yunho opened the door and Jaejoong went straight inside.

“Where is it?” All of a sudden, Yunho dug his hand into the pocket of his jacket and retrieved the CDs he stole. “Hey!” Whirling around, Jaejoong found himself locked inside the storage room. “What the fuck? Get me out of here!” he yelled, pounding hard on the door.

“Should’ve kept your hands to yourself, thief.” Yunho’s victorious voice spoke behind the door.

“I-I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to, I swear! I was gonna pay for it.” He was so screwed.

“Say what you wanna say, kid. I’m calling the police on you.”

“What? Are you serious??”

“Yes. That should teach you a lesson.”

He heard faint footsteps fading away and Jaejoong began to panic. This wasn’t supposed to happen. How was he going to explain to his parents this? The thought of going to jail terrified him and yet there was nothing much he could do. Stuck in a locked and dark storage room, Jaejoong could only fret the future.

**

A couple of hours later, Jaejoong heard the knob jostling and after quite some time spending in the dark, he had to squint hard at the light slowly pouring into the room.

“Come on now. I can’t let you stay here till closing time.” Yunho told him, sounding particularly miffed as he opened the door wide and allowed him to go through it.

Looking around anxiously, Jaejoong shivered not just from the cold but also at the prospect of getting jailed anytime soon. “Did-did you call the police?” he was slouching and his arms crossed protectively against his chest. Yep, he was definitely scared.

The young shopkeeper shrugged it off again and it was beginning to irritate him to no end. “Of course not. But I hope you learned your lesson.”

“Y-you lied to me?” Jaejoong spluttered.

“I had to. It scared the shit out of you, didn’t it?”

“You kept me in there for a long time! What do you think?”

Eyes narrowing dangerously at him, Yunho stood on his full height and glared down at him. “You’re not in the position to get angry here, you know? You should thank me I didn’t tell on you. I did you a favour.”

Even though Yunho was right, Jaejoong was too mad to listen to him with full comprehension. “Yeah, favour my ass. I’m getting out of here.” Turning away in haste, he left the shop in blind anger, ignoring the urgent calls behind him.

Apparently, he failed to get his sister’s present, which he actually paid for. Oh, he was so screwed.

**

As expected, his dad yelled at him for not getting his sister a present as what he had instructed. The next day, he found himself trudging reluctantly back to the record store. As expected, he was greeted by a smug looking boy named Yunho.

“Oh, you’re back.” He looked more amused than angry and Jaejoong took that as a good sign. He wouldn’t want to be locked up again in the storage room. It was way too dark and hot in there. For someone who loved loud music and dark clothes, he surely hated being surrounded by absolute darkness. The irony of it made him laugh in his head.

“Where’s the CD I actually paid for? Give it to me.” He demanded.

Yunho scoffed, “I can see you still need to work on that attitude of yours.” He handed over the forgotten CD, which Jaejoong grabbed in a hurry.

Now that the CD was in his grasp, Jaejoong remained standing there, exchanging what seemed to be a mental conversation with the other boy. They were staring at each other for awhile, lost in each other’s thoughts. Jaejoong broke the silence first, asking the inevitable question, “How did you know that I was stealing?”

“You were too obvious.” Yunho commented as if it was the most common thing in the world.

“What? I wasn’t!” Obviously he was, but Jaejoong just couldn’t give the other boy the sense of satisfaction of reading him so well.

Yunho chuckled, shaking his head in utter incredulity at his naivety. “You should’ve seen yourself, looking around like this.” he turned his head everywhere, exaggerating what Jaejoong did and despite of how it was supposed to be insulting, he found himself snickering at how silly Yunho looked.

“Oh yeah? If you know so much stuff, you should teach me how to do it then.”

Not backing up from the challenge, Yunho stood on position and faced a rack full of albums. “Your visible arm should stay here while the other,” he swiped his hand and successfully pocketed CDs inside his pocket without Jaejoong noticing, “swipes the merchandise.”

Jaejoong had to admit, that was pretty cool.

“Apart from that,” Yunho stepped closer, “your eyes gave you away.”

“Huh?” Jaejoong lifted his gaze, looking questioningly at the taller boy. “My eyes?” he couldn’t help but feel flustered at the way Yunho was looking at him. He was all of a sudden standing very close and his gaze was highly fixed on his, causing his cheeks to flush hot.

“They’re an expressive pair.” Taking another step, Yunho managed to close the distance between them and had the shorter boy trapped against the rack of CDs. “Expressive and beautiful.”

Swallowing thickly, Jaejoong tried to process in his head what was going on. Was he flirting? This was actually an act of flirtation, right? Because if it wasn’t, how come he felt hot all of a sudden. It wasn’t everyday a handsome boy complimented him and Yunho was definitely one of those highly exceeding in the looks department.

“T-they are?”

Nodding, the shopkeeper continued, “What’s your name?” the question was asked so endearingly and suave; Jaejoong felt like melting.

“Jaejoong.” He replied softly, so soft that Yunho had to strain to hear it.

“I’m Yunho,” the boy finally introduced himself, “But I guess you already knew that.”

It was funny how for the second time that week, Jaejoong went home without his sister’s present again. He was too giddy to mind his dad’s wrath as he went straight to his room to swoon at the very first boy that made his heart pound like crazy.

**

His visit to the record store for the third time had been exciting. He didn’t forget to get his sister’s gift this time but he ended up staying way too long in the shop, thanks to the overly sociable shopkeeper. They talked so much and it was amazing how the shop’s owner didn’t kick him out for disrupting the business.

Yunho had always been a good worker and one hell of a multi-tasker. Jaejoong enjoyed watching him interact with everyone, which he used to despise a few days ago.

They had a lot of things in common, much to his surprise. He also learnt that Yunho was only a few days younger than him and goes to the same high school as his youngest sister. They live in the same neighbourhood and for some reason, they never really ran into each other. It was as if their meeting at the record store was the last resort for their paths to finally meet.

“You’re graduating soon.” Jaejoong brushed off imaginary lint off of his pants, “Do you have any plans for college?”

Yunho regarded him silently as he conjured an appropriate answer. It was already eight in the evening and the shop was closed off for the day, leaving the two of them alone in the midst of musical insanity and genuine masterpiece. The silence was comforting and the presence of Jaejoong made him feel twice better.

“I think I’m going to take up law, or something. My dad wants me to become a lawyer.” Yunho responded after a few moments.

“But how about you? What do you want?”

Yunho chuckled, “At this point? Nothing. I really don’t want to go to college… but doing so would bring shame to my family.” He expressed with a roll of his eyes, “You know how they can be.”

Jaejoong agreed, “Totally. Did I tell you how my dad basically forced me to get my sister a present? I can only imagine how he’ll be once I graduate.”

Both of them laughed at their shared woes in life, coming into an obvious mutual understanding. The laughter ended followed by a heavy duty silence in which both just stood there and just stared at each other. They do that a lot with no apparent reason, sometimes they just fell into the act unconsciously.

To Jaejoong, Yunho looked cute and having a smaller face definitely attributed to it. He also liked the mole above his lip and the tear-drop shaped eyes that disappeared into thin lines whenever he smiled. Heck, he even thought the snaggletooth was adorable.

To Yunho, Jaejoong looked like a gorgeous recluse kid who had a sharp tongue and the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen.

“W-what?”

It seemed like he spoke the latter out loud and there was no getting out of it. Yunho smiled and sauntered forward, invading Jaejoong’s personal space once again. “I really like your eyes. You look cold on the outside but your eyes are like windows to your actual thoughts and feelings. I can see you through them.”

Jaejoong was silent but he didn’t look any less affected by the rush of beautiful words coming out of Yunho’s mouth.

“Jae, have you ever been kissed?” Yunho was standing way too close that Jaejoong could almost feel his breath fanning lightly against his cheek.

“No…” Yes, at the age of seventeen, his lips were still pretty much a virgin, just like the rest of his body.

“Can I be your first?”

A smile crept slowly upon Jaejoong’s pouty lips as he moved his head up and down, “Yes.” That was all the permission Yunho ever needed.

Jaejoong always thought that the kissing scenes he saw on TV and movies were way too exaggerated with the way they close their eyes as if they were relishing every moment of it. It didn’t occur to him that he would be doing the same thing.

As he felt those pair of lips he had always admired brush against his, Jaejoong sighed and unthinkingly shut his eyes in anticipation. It was chaste and sweet, evoking so much new emotions Jaejoong had never experienced in his seventeen years of life.

Yunho grinned against his lips once he caught the small whimper Jaejoong gave upon the separation of their lips. The taller man dove in again and kissed him with so much vigour this time, guiding both of his arms around the other’s neck, pulling him closer. If this was how it felt like to be kissed by the other boy, then he was definitely missing a lot.

This was meant to be and Jaejoong wouldn’t have it any other way.
